Default Anyone have experience with a Dillon 450 Jr?

A family member is going to let me have this for $100 if I want it. It sounds like a deal, but I thought I'd get some input from others first. There's some information on the web for the 450. However, there's little available for this 450 Jr. I read somewhere that this press is similar to the SDB but still has the capability of reloading rifle ammo.

The press is currently set up for loading .38/.357. I shoot .223, 7.5 swiss, and .40S&W. I'm trying to determine if it's worth it to try to get this thing operational.

1. Will this accept standard sized dies?
2. If not, will I be able to purchase Dillon's dies as this model seems to be discontinued?
3. Will I be able to reload rifle calibers?

Give Dillon a call. For the cost of shipping thay will overhaul it for you. You should be able to use any standard dies. For a $100.00 you can't go wrong.

+1

Dillons warranty is the best, you ship the press back to the, and they will refurbish it and send it back to you.

Best bet is to check with Dillon, they are always very helpful. As for you questions,
1. No, I believe this press uses the same die and tool heads as the Square Deal B, not standard dies. The RL450 uses standard dies, and can be upgraded to an RL550B if you so desire. The 450 Jr. does not have an auto powder feeder nor an auto prime setup. I don't know if they are available for the Jr.

2. The Dillon SDB dies are available in HANDGUN calibers only.
3. I do not believe the Jr. has any rifle dies available for it, as it is in the same class as the SDB.

Sometimes it is more trouble than it is worth to be starting out and trying to build something out of a "project" at the same time. At $100 it seems pretty cheap, but you can add up a good amount of $$ getting something you can use out of it.

Buy it!! I don't think they make it anymore, could be Collectable. If you really don't want it, Sell it to me! I'll give you your $100.00, and pay the shipping costs )

The top of that press looks like it has the same shellplate as a SDB.
If that's the case, it won't take standard dies.
I would pass.

I have purchased a regular 450 for about $120 and it takes regular dies.
That would be a much better setup to start with.
You can put a regular powder measure and 550 primer system on a regular 450 and you have a 550 sans removable shellplate.

I finally got around to calling Dillon. Their representative confirmed that it will use the same shell plate and dies as the SDB and will not accommodate rifle calibers. Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'll only keep this if there's someone else out there with a Square Deal who wants to trade my .357 kit for their .40 kit. Anyone???
