AR Stock question
Hey Everyone,
I've been a lurker on this site since I found out about the Bullet Button idea and have since purchased a couple of lowers and have just about everything else I need on order to complete my first build (the folks at CMMG were extremely helpful!) Before deciding to put together my AR, I had multiple long question and answer sessions with a couple of SFPD friends of mine that have both built many, many rifles and they've given me the security to believe that my "fixed mag" rifle (just like all of theirs) should be just fine, evil features and all. So here's my question: I just got off the phone with a nice guy from MagPul after having a question about the order I had placed for their CTR commercial carbine stock and he gave me the " you live in California and can't have a collapsible stock " lecture. I assured him not to worry, and he's placing my order, but I just wanted to make sure that the collapsible stock is, in fact, one of those evil features that is negated by my "locked magazine". Thanks for your time guys! |

with a fixed magazine, you're good to go. You wouldn't happen to be the same person picking up two stripped lowers from city arms this morning, would you? |

Why yes I would, how'd you know? The place was packed! Were you the guy that talked with me about the new mag lock?

Yup, that was me. They were pretty busy, but not all that much more so than usual. That place does a ton of business. Always amazes me to see so many shooters in the bay area.

Yeah, not sure what the reference is to the officer in question, being new to this board, but these are really great guys who have gone out of their way over the years to teach me a lot about firearms (among many other things). They're even going to put me through a reloading clinic to help me learn to use a press (though if I have to listen to another 2 hr argument on crimping I may lose my mind).
Not all SF Police are politically annoying, but most don't know about California gun laws, so it can be a hassle. |

Do you have any particular use in mind for the rifle as far as distance you want to shoot, etc? |

Pass our thanks on to your SFPD friends for their support of the hobby and being politically sane. It's nice to hear about them supporting AR's and not trying to find every reason why they're illegal. |

I'd be ecstatic to be accurate to 500 yds, but since I didn't go with a longer barrel, I'd be happy with being able to hit the black at 200 with iron sites

If you like that ammo you picked up in the brown wrapping, aimsurplus.com is selling it $119 per 500, just fyi. |

I will, and thanks. There are an enormous amount of "office politics" and bureaucracy that go on in the police depts. in the Bay Area and it would be unfair for me to comment on them, but rest assured that there are some really smart, really honest, and really Black Gun Diseased individuals in uniform out here!!

Are you in the field, or just have lots of friends in the pd? Here's to hoping if I ever get pulled over with the ar in my car, the person that pulled me over has caught BGD. |

I just happen to have ended up knowing a lot of cops, I'm not sure why, you wouldn't think that the two worlds would mesh. As for the car question, I asked that same question and was told (by one of my PD friends) " (most)Cops don't know a damn thing about gun laws here, most will confiscate the rifle and let the DOJ decide it's legality - which is a gigantic pain in the ***" So then I ask, "well what if I'm going to the range and get pulled over for speeding or something - don't I have to tell the officer about the rifle?" to which he responds "God no, don't tell them anything and if they ask tell them there's nothing illegal in the car and refuse to let 'em search" I'm still not so sure about that method, but it did make me smile - coming from a 24 yr. veteran. Unfortunately, the DOJ can't seem to make up their mind about anything, so seems like that'd be an unfortunate mess. I keep a copy of the flow chart with me in the rifle case, should that happen. Not sure what help it would be. Hopefully between that, the mag lock, and transporting the gun with a .22lr conversion in place, I should be able to make enough of an argument to deter some people, but you never know until it happens. |

City Arms is a great place, just amazing the business they are doing since they first opened, it's a testament to their business style and friendliness. I just can't say enough about the place, while other shops refuse to order certain items, espcially OLL's and act like they don't want your money. City Arms instead is embracing all it's customer base, and they are willing to order anything that's legal to have, let alone stock all the nice OLL items others don't have. I don't venture much to the South Bay or East Bay, so I can't comment on the other shops in those parts of the Bay, my experiences are limited to just a few on the upper Peninsula.
At any rate it's good to see that some in the SFPD are aware of the laws, and are also doing their own builds. Hopefully they will edcuate their brothers in arms, and eventually there might not be such an hostile attitude that some have (though I've never ran into any). I have a friend who is retired from Milpitas PD, I was educating him about the laws and how they are with the OLL parts and AR builds, he said he was going to pass the information along to some of his friends on the department. I have other friends in other departments that I have to pass along information to, one really isn't into firearms though he can appreciate the reason why folks want to have them, the other is a collector on a smaller scale and appreciates all the cool stuff out there. There's a few others I need to pass along information to, though they won't always deal with folks who may have an AR in their trunk, still good information for them to know anad have in the back of their mind. |

Congrats on your purchase, yes it's Vladimir, Dimitri and Bob, great guys. There's one other gentelman working there, but I didn't catch his name, also a friendly person.
M&A Parts, has a nice listing of parts, they list a short or long A2 buttstock for $60 bucks. http://www.m-aparts.com/products.asp...=70&subOne=215 I think were all a bit skeptical on the OLL items at first, but upon reading the posted literature and what others say, it eases your feelings and makes the process easier. Also having a good gunshop to deal with, and friendly folks to explain things to you helps tremendously. Hope this helps, Frank Quote:
