Gopher Flats Sportsmen's Club Parking Lot, Los Angeles, CA Zoom to your heart's content. You can even get directions and an estimate on how long it might take to get there. Last edited by Rez805; 05-05-2017 at 8:35 PM.. |

Saying the matches are open to public, but not disclosing where they are is disingenuous at best. Yes, there is an email link that purports to give directions, but it is an email link that is never answered. Now that Deadwood boys at Piru is having matches every 1-4th Sunday I'd suggest people go and support a club where people are welcomed instead of a cliquish good ol' boy's club.

OMG.
It's like some of you are just clueless about politics in California. Everything is legal. But there are organizations what want to take away our 2A rights and activities. Follow the dots and if you half a brain you can figure out why the policy is in place. Mods please delete this thread. |

Do you honestly think that those people don't know how to find your range?
I found it by looking on Google maps. Perhaps you should ask them to remove the tag on the parking lot as well. Then hope that those people don't ask about why those hillsides have weird rectangles. Look, I get it. We're all in the same boat. Mods feel free to close this. Best of luck to you, OP. |

I haven't been a member of Gopher's/SWPL for years. I haven't shot there for years.
And a principal of the Piru match is moving to AZ. The range has new owners and is raising the rent. There's a good chance the match at Piru isn't going to survive. Enjoy it while you can. |

You are welcome to have whatever policy you wish to have in place. Just don't hold sanctioned USPSA matches if you won't disclose the location of the match to non-club members that wish to shoot it. Just have outlaw matches within your group.

I have no problem with it being secret and for members only. However, then it should not be a sanctioned USPSA match as it is not open to the public. I will discuss it with the USPSA Area 2 co-ordinator.

Yeah, hopefully he can explain how the place fits the criteria of a USPSA club. The requirement of being an USPSA club and holding matches is for those matches to be open to public. That is part of the reason I and others like me pay dues to USPSA.
Again as I have said they can have their secret club and not reveal the location of the range to outsiders that wish to shoot at their matches, that's their prerogative. However, then they should not be part of the USPSA and get the benefits of being a USPSA club (e.g. classifiers getting registered etc.). Just have their own closed matches among themselves like they do now as a non-USPSA club. An analogy could be holding an "open" election that everyone can vote, but the location of the polling places are secret and known by only a select few, and not divulged. Doesn't quite fit the definition of an "open" election.

This discussion has gone a little sideways. The people who run the match welcome the public and are very friendly to new shooters (at least they were when I shot my first match there a number of years ago). They do not discriminate against non club members and most of the people who shoot the match are not members of gopher flats.
The people who run the match have not set the requirement that the range location not be disclosed publicly. That is forced on them by the general rules of the range/club. As everyone can see from the posts above, the match is not hard to find. I won't speculate on why they have this policy but I suspect it goes back to a document written long before google maps was a twinkle in some engineer's eye. I think a policy of not disclosing the location is outdated and makes no sense in this day and age, but that's not for me to decide. For those of you justifiably angry about the extra effort required to get directions to the range, I would suggest that now that you have the location, just go shoot a match there. The location is a one time inconvenience (they won't erase your memory at the end of the match) and they put on a fun and challenging match. Working against the USPSA affiliation of one of the few clubs running matches in the area is not a good use of your energy as a competitive shooter. To be 100% clear, I am not affiliated with running this match and am not a Gopher member. Im just an occasional shooter at their matches that would like to continue shooting uspsa there. |

The policy has been in place since SWPL moved out of Piru and into that range years ago. A past USPSA president and Area 2 Director have regularly shot at SWPL. They didn't have a problem with it. |

my buddies and I have been shooting the steel matches for the last couple months and I can tell you that they are very welcoming to new shooters. My emails were responded to promptly and I even got a personal phone call to tell me directions on how to get there. The location is not hard to find. It's no secret that the location is on a certain map, so stop complaining about it being a "secret" match and just go out and shoot.

Yes, Sam Houston is moving to AZ but the club will continue on offering the same quality of matches that everyone has come to enjoy. There are no further planned pricing changes and the new owners actually want to grow shooting sports in the Piru canyon! So look for some really great news coming out of there soon.

Gopher Flats / SWPL gets between 20-70 shooters every 2nd Sunday of the month for Steel Challenge, and 70-100 shooters religiously every 4th Sunday of the month of USPSA, so there clearly is not an issue with people finding the range.
Now, there is a club policy about not being able to publish the ranges address on the internet or other forms of publication, but if you send an email they should provide you with directions. I'll check with the MD and see why emails are not being responded to. |

I too have sent e-mails concerning the Highpower/CMP matches in the past without any response. I just sent one a couple of days ago after seeing this thread go back and forth. However, no response again. It would be appreciated looking into why e-mails go un-answered.
