Default 642 Speedloaders

Has anyone found speedloaders that work with the 642? Speedloaders, not speed strips.

Thx.

Safariland makes speedloaders for J-frames.

What SarcoBlaster said. HKS-36 speedloaders work well with all of my J-Frame Smiths.

Agreed, HKS-36 loaders work for me. I also have a Safariland CH7, but it requires some finagling to get it past the grips to the point where it will release the rounds.

Thanks. Sounds like it's the HKS.

I can vouch for these. http://www.5starfirearms.com/J2-357-...j235705000.htm

You can also find them on e-bay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-Of-Two-...0AAOSwe6ZaXqr4

I also use the HKS 36 speedloaders, but with the stock grips, they can bind if I insert them too far. Apparently, one can take a Dremel tool to the left grip to flatten it so that this isn't as much of an issue.

I've ordered the 5 star firearms ones to see if they're better. Supposedly, they work by twisting the knob in the opposite direction of the HKS ones though.

I have the same problem as you with the HKS speedloaders. You have to be careful not to insert them too far, otherwise the stock 642 grip is an obstacle. Please provide an update when you receive the 5 Star ones.

The 5 Star J frame speedloaders are nice, but the still bind a little on the stock 642 grips. They bind a little bit less than the HKS, but if you jam them in too far, they still get stuck.

They’re all aluminum which is nice. The knob twists the opposite way of the HKS ones, so you turn them to the right to lock and left to release, which for me is more intuitive since most things I use are right hand thread. I probably wouldn’t mix carrying them though as under stress, I would probably get confused.

That said, are they worth getting? I’d say yes if you don’t have any speedloaders, or if you want something more durable than the plastic HKS ones. I haven’t tried other brands like Safariland, etc, but the 5 Star ones seem to be high quality and also seem like they will last a long time.

They’re more expensive than the HKS ones, but you get polished aluminum vs plain black plastic.

Ymmv, etc.

Safariland work perfect with my 642 or 442 with stock grips. Drop into the cylinder push and it releases.. No need to twist a knob to release.. I find them a bit smaller and easier to carry and use.
