Default Hunting Rifles

Lets do a hunting rifle thread! I love precision rifles but there's a charm that hunting guns have about them.

Gonna replace this pic with the finished product as soon as I'm done rust bluing.
Edit: done for now, I think it's gonna be a "working gun". Not bad for a first rifle.

CZ550, factory rifle was in 416 rigby, action was sent off to Pac-Nor and they put on a 510 Wells Express barrel. 24", has a banded front sight and express rear sight with two flipup leaves, silver soldered on (NO screws). Stock has flush-mount sling swivels (rather than a barrel band swivel), and I added a 13 oz mercury recoil reducer in the stock. The rifle balances EXACTLY where it balanced as it came from the factory. The barrel is bedded the full length of the channel all the way to behind the recoil lug. I may bed the tang later.

Weight with one round in the chamber is exactly 12.0 pounds.

This rifle, when doing 99% of its shooting, will never wear a scope. 80% of the shooting will be standing offhand. (at paper ) I tell you what though, I am going to kill ALOT of paper durn dead.

(510 Wells, two on the right. Next one over is a 338 lapua and a 275 Rigby for reference.)

Probably a T-Rex. Or Veloceraptor.

Ruger single shot? sweet!

I predict this thread will be overrun by medium game and varmint bolt rifles before we know it. So lets pack it full of the cool specialized guns while we get the eyeballs!

My slug gun, for shotgun only areas:

Handi rifle, Ultralight slug hunter, in 20ga. Plenty of power to bowl over a pig, and surprisingly accurate with Remington Copper Solids. No muss, no fuss. Rifle weighs about as much as a postage stamp. Cost about as much, too.

How long does it take you to strap in before you go hunt? Looking at all of those lose laces and things hangin all over the place. Don't walk through any brush.

It's thousands, its just a short 25-06 same bullets same powder amounts, well it does squeeze out about 50-75 fps more but that's if you go full tilt. I do 3325 fps with 100 grainers

excellent. Who made the banded sight, how's the hood held on, and do you have troubles with it coming off under recoil?

I ask, cause my 510 wells.... well.... the hood is flying off under recoil. It's spring-pinned in.

The hood is what came on the stock Zastava, I just slipped it on the new front sight (NEGC). I just got the gun back from my smith yesterday afternoon and so I haven't shot it yet. I need to buy some bullets, I don't think that the 300 and 350 grain bullets that I have for my 45.70 are going to test it.

Haven't weighed it but it's pretty heavy lol...not ideal for long hikes that's for sure specially if you're gonna carry it two hand ready lol...planning on just carrying it on a sling though but we'll see how it works out...I also have a savage in 308 that I'm using as my backup rifle

Talking Classic hunting rifles: a blast from the past!

Here's my favorite hunting rifle: Pedersoli Kodiak Mk. IV .45-70 Gov't:

It's a great boar hunting rifle.

I absolutely love the .45-70 Gov't...

There's some great rifles on this thread. Let's keep it going. Cheers! --1911ShooterPhil

I wouldn't want to tote that very far even on a sling, but that's just me. There are tougher hombres in the world.

I'll stick with my 7.5 lb and under rifles for hunting and the varmint model when I don't have to carry it very far. It's amazing what difference a pound or two makes in a day of hiking.

Not that many really, mostly it just goes to Africa with me.

In Namibia it shot:
Kudu
Gemsbok
Steenbok
Zebra

In Zimbabwe it took:
Cape Buffalo

In South Africa I've taken:
Blesbok
Wildebeest
Impala
Bushbuck

In the US I've shot:
Ground Squirrels

Haha haha I remember the ground squirrel. :-)

That is a nice list of exotics for sure. My 308 I had for almost 20 years shot just 1 deer. Someday I hope to get more with it.

If I win the lotto I would like to do what you had done :-)

Ruger American .308

Great rifle under 7.5lbs with scope! Makes repeatable hits on a 14" gong at 605 yds using M80 ball. I hope to start using it as my deer rifle.
