I'm assuming this is for .308 Winchester. That's pretty much the cheapest. It actually hasn't gone up that much. I think it was $35 per 100 a couple years ago.

Your gun funds were pretty darn unlimted in 2007 too!

I hate trimming brass so I figure 500 should get me by for a while

500 brass.. 10 reloads a piece.. you're good for 5000/ the life of your barrel! Calculate that out and you will have spent probably about $1,750 in reloading components!

i learned something a few days ago at Randy's place. the life of the barrel is actually the wear on the throat. all you have to do it rethread and re-ream the barrel, and wallah good as new again. the end result would be a shortened barrel, about 1/2-1 inch. he said it'll take alot more than several thousand rounds to wear out the rifling.

This is called "setting back" a barrel. Quite common in benchrest circles.

6.5x284 shooters probably benefit the most from barrel setback since they only get 1000 'usable' rounds on the average barrel. More often that not, the load will have to be redeveloped since there's a change in muzzle velocity and barrel harmonics. Also, often a gunsmith will recommend cutting off an inch from the muzzle end and recrowing because the diameter of the muzzle end will also open up as the barrel life increases.

If you are doing it yourself, the cost savings is significant.

"Two semesters" is more pallatable than "one year" Plus when you say semesters, it implies some free saturdays in between!

Where at?
The Venice High machine shop class is starting back up on monday nights 6pm to 9pm. Anyone in the area wanting to use a machine shop should consider this class.

You will spend more on the tooling too. Don't forget the surface grinder and EDM. You will be wanting those too. It never ends...

Don't be tempted by smaller/lesser quality machines. Better to buy good used 80's machines than new imports. As with gun safes, buy bigger and heavier than you ever expect to need. One of the best measures of a machine's initial quality is the weight. Don't buy a lathe weighing much less than 2000lbs. Mills will all be in the 2300-3000lb range. They give a 100% write-off on equipment purchased in the first year of your DBA so wait until next year to start and then get all the big stuff within a year so you don't have to put it on a depreciation schedule.

It was just a random calculation having nothing to do with trimming Every thread in this section always gets off topic!

I think I'll order 300 rounds to start loading for class. Just gotta find some IMR4895 because I am going to switch back to reduce the amount of powder I use.
Anyone need some RL15? I also have 2 lds of H335 I was using in 223. PM me I'll give you prices tonight. I also have about 700 rounds of unfired LC brass (non match). I'll ship that but not the powder. |
