Default Winchester 1895 Russian Charger Guides - making a set

Hello all,

After selling my spare set of charger clip guides for a Russian Winchester 1895 musket, a calgunner asked if I could make him a set because of how hard they are to find.

Since I now have a mini mill, and like to work with files, I wanted to give it a shot.

Turns out I didn't have a 1/4" end mill so I haven't drilled and recessed the screw hole yet, but wanted to share progress.
I am using 4140 steel since that is what I had on hand.

Very cool - would be useful for restoring a sporter if they got rid of the original charger guides.

I think that is the case with most sporters. I will post final pics when both sides are ready.

The most difficult thing would be finding the screws. May need to make some as well.

Had a couple of hours after work today, so I finished the other side, drilled holes, and cold blued them both. Now just need to make the screws.

Thank you all.
Once I have the screws done I will put them onto my rifle and take pics. They will be much "newer" than the receiver.

Maybe some stone washing would be appropriate?

I was making them for someone else. It would be fun to match to the condition of the destination receiver but I haven't seen pictures of it.

If hot blued, drop them in a glass of Coke, wait an hr, then remove and rinse with water. Repeat till they match. Don't drink the Coke, the smell alone will kill ya!

It is definitely one option. There are many ways to "age" them, as I am sure you know, including targeted rusting and pitting, general rusting or corroding, stonewash, patina, etc.

It would be fun to get pics of the receiver and if the guy that wanted these would go for me trying to make then match I would have to find the method or combination of methods to get them to match.

There are cool things you can do to make it look like the screws rusted at the same time or got beat up at the same time by extending the wear onto parts of the screws and adjacent parts of the guides. That way it looks more "authentic". The inner walls of the guides would be protected as if not a lot of moisture went in, etc.

But the guy has been silent since before I finished them. I think he made an account on calguns just to get in touch with me and ask if I could make them (I replied that I wouldn't be able to for a month or 2), then he sent me another PM asking if I had given it more thought (I replied with a plan and when I was going to start), then I sent him a PM saying I was starting, then another with progress, then another when they were done. No response. Maybe he forgot to check back in on calguns or maybe he just changed his mind.

Anyway, still nothing from the guy that wanted these but I am making the screws.

These are being made from Brownells #10 screw blanks. The blanks are about 2" long so I cut them down a bit.

The heads of the blanks are also larger than what I need so I filed 2 flats on the sides to make it easier to hold the screw by the head to cut the threads.

I used a 10-36 die to cut the threads. That is what my original screw gauges at. However it seems 10-32 screws turn into the receiver as well (I have no idea how this is happening, but the only way it could is if the thread in the receiver was larger diameter I guess).

The thread is cut. The screws are longer on purpose so that I can chuck them up into my power drill and file the heads down to proper dimension.

I decided that now was a good time to file out the slots. The original blank slots are way too thin and not deep enough because I will also need to reduce the height of the heads.

Finished making the screws. I am not good at it so one came out a little shorter.

Thank you. I will be making a few more sets of these. Would be cool to try out making other parts as well (that don't require heat treating)

I see you on the WACA forums....have you tried talking with Mike Hunter? He restores Winchester. He'd be a wealth of knowledge.

The guy that originally wanted a set has re-appeared after I sold the one above.

Another guy hit me up from Canada, so I made him a set as well.

All done.

It's great to see such talent these days. Reminds me of the time when actual gunsmiths could repair something broken, or build a fine huntin rifle out of the 20 dollar barrel. PAX
