For semi-serious answer:
If I'm carrying the guns legally and/or as I normally do, the AR is unloaded in the trunk and the handgun is on my person(yes, I CCW).

I would get out of my car and head the opposite direction of the shooter. After I'm certain of my safety, I'll do the 911 call.

Sorry, hero pay sucks(ie none) and my goal is to go home alive at the end of the day.

True, but if you choose to save the life of your family or other innocents, you shoot to stop the threat and continue till the threat no longer exists.

You don't kill, take em out, or put a cap in his azz. You nullify the threat of loss of innocent lives including your own

In all reality, not going to happen too. He'll get hit by a dumb driver if he pulled a stunt like that in L.A/SGV.

Well, you guys sure know how to welcome in a new user, where do I signup to donate?
If you have reasonable cause to believe that you or another are in danger of death or great bodily harm you can do whatever needs to be done to prevent that from both a legal and ethical perspective. That is not to say some overzealous DA will not make your life difficult or the perp’s family will not sue you.

You threw so many variables into the pot that it would take a book to thoroughly address them all; and books have been written on the subject. I would refer you to “In the Gravest Extreme” by Masad Ayoob as a starting point. Beyond what I have said already is the important question of collateral damage. You are not describing a situation in which most of us would want to try to make shots at a moving assailant. The battle ground is strewn with people and hard objects that are just waiting to deflect a bullet. Any of those people or their relatives would be happy to sue you if you injure or kill them.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot to think about and learn before you start carrying a gun for self defense. Fortunately it was taught to some of us as we grew up. The important question to answer is; in my heart of hearts do I honest to god believe that my life or body, or that of another is in danger? If the answer is yes; why wouldn’t you shoot? If it’s no; why would you? Because that is the question you will be held accountable for by both the law and your maker.

Dial 911 and let the local cops/Feds/DHS/Post Office Inspector/DEA/Hardened Thug Task Force deal with the guy.

As for the car, that's what insurance is for. A gunfight in real life is as glamorous as a coronary. I've come close twice, and I pray I never have to pull the trigger. If you can avoid the threat, do so. Your kids, your lawyer, and your family will thank you for not playing John McClaine.

If this hypothetical occurs before June/2013, go ahead and do your worst. After June, he'll be able to cop the "Twinkie" defense, so you'd be in big legal trouble.

Yes, Twinkies will finally be back on sale in June.

Seriously though, if you can take a clear shot and you are SWAT certified(a cop) or at least in the top 1% of shooters(non-LEO). He just met his maker. Just depends on a clear shot and your abilities. You don't want to witness all that gore/carnage and do nothing.

Don't be surprised if you get shot, while looking like a "perp". No good deed goes unpunished. Oh..., and don't forget to lawyer up. That is going to be an expensive civil affair.

why ask about a hypothetical situation? just looked at what happened in real life with recent mass shootings in AZ and CO.

were there no one carrying where gun laws are even more relax than CA? or no one took up the challenge?

Let's give you a hypothetical.

You're outside your home and a person comes at you saying he is going to kill you and shoots two of your neighbors on the way. You have an AR fully loaded and a handgun. What would you do while watching him come at you and your wife and two kids playing in the yard?
I would shoot the wife, tell the kids to get lost and then go on a shooting rampage with the first shooter HEAT style.

'OP if you actually saw the situation you described happening before your eyes, is there truly a question as to what you or anyone else would do, if they were so armed?

I remember thinking about that kind of scenario when that guy went around Hollywood Blvd shooting at passing cars...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onxabK8doqE

There were a ton of people in buildings, all looking down at the shooter.
Someone with a rifle could have put an end to that pretty quickly.

Throw the handgun at him to get his attention and shoot the gas tank in the car closest to him with the AR.

Lots of luck finding one. I have seen much better advice here than put out in some of my CCW training classes.

I find it comical how easily people here scream "troll!" If you all are so sensitive maybe you should make these forums accessible by invitation only.

I like these "what-if" type questions.

I would run and hide preferably under a car.

In California, it is just not worth engaging in a public shooting due to trigger happy cops, overzealous D.A.'s looking to make a name for themselves, ambulance chasing lawyers and an anti-gun news media.

You should keep this post for safe keeping in a safe somewhere. That way they can inscribe this on your headstone after such incident.

It will start out, "as he lay under his car he remembered posting this ^^ on CGN and wondered, what was i thinking....
