At the town hall in napa and the congressman said he is for an assault weapons bill and he defines it as California law.

I misunderstood her as saying everyone should have to obtain a license to own a gun. Thank you for clarifying.

My thoughts while watching:

Everyone wants to feel safe. Some people want the government to make them feel safe, and these are the people who want to deny others the right to bear arms. That's it in a nutshell.

Thompson rambles on like a clueless wandering idiot, interrupting people.

No one, so far, has talked about the War on Drugs and it's relationship to gun violence.

Second woman talks about "drivers license" for guns... nothing about license to carry, but just license to own.

I would like to have heard the lady proposing gun owner insurance detail exactly HOW that would decrease violence.

Dammit, has he forgotten that he shot full auto military M16s, not semi-auto civilian AR-15s? Has he been drinking the kool-aid for so long that he's forgotten such basic differences?

Rep. Mike Thompson is not our friend. He will throw AR-15 owners under the bus and most likely drive the bus too. His bias towards that class of firearms showed in his comments about "assault rifles" and "assault magazines" have no place in Amercan Society. He repeated it at least a half dozen times. I must admit, that his "assault magazine" comment caught me off guard. I thought I had heard every weird and incorrect term to describe a firearm and its distinct features. "Assault magazines" came from Thompson's mouth more often than "assault rifle". I am telling you boys and girls, Rep. Mike Thompson is not our friend at all.

Someone asked another if he knew what makes an asssault weapon an assault weapon and the reply was: "it's like pornography, you know it when you see it." Anybody know who said that? Was it Thompson who sad that or someone else?

Question for the people there. Was the format more of a question and answer style or when people commented were they allowed to talk for a bit. I have an analogy to explain that I believe can be an interesting perspective but would take a bit of time to go through. I'm talking under 5min. Do we have time or are comments meant to be very short?

I'd prefer to say it, but if this isn't the right forum I am happy to write it. Just verbally I'll be certain he'll hear it while written it may be read and circular filed by a staffer.

I think you guys need to keep hammering the fact that we don't own "assault rifles" and that assault rifles are what the military uses, not what we use. Don't keep letting him get away with using that term!

Or you could just say that racecars only belong on the track and not on our city streets, therefore, we need to ban all cars that have spoilers. Same thing.

This is about the clearest explanation possible:

But it doesn't matter, the Brady's own this state and the DOJ.

That was said by Thompson. He is clearly way off-base. He, like many others in Congress, can say they own a gun, can say they hunt, served in the military, etc. and then in the next breath propose a ban.

Of all people who spoke that night, Thomspon seemed one of the most detached from reality.

Quote:

It was a public comment style hearing. Each commenter had 2 minutes to speak (since there were 55 who had already asked to comment by filling out cards). Unfortunately, since Thompson kept interrupting commenters and bloviating about "what's not on the table", he cut into the overall time of the meeting. And of course, you had various public officials grandstanding prior to the hearing, so that cut into the time as well. About halfway through the commenters the Mayor cut it to one minute per commenter.

Of all the comments, I'd say at least 2/3rds were pro-gun, with 1/4 or 1/3 being the usual crowd of politically active elderly liberals common in Northern California public venues (we have our share in Mendocino County, that's for sure).

The live link is gone, but the recorded video should show up in their archived video list today or tomorrow.

One more thing before I get to work this morning: http://napavalleyregister.com/news/l...9bb2963f4.html
That is the Napa Valley Register summary of the event, which grossly over-exaggerates the presence of anti-gun people. There were many pro-gunners and people who spoke of not trying to deconstruct the 2nd Amendment in a misguided attempt to curb violence.

I heard the same thing on the news. (Might have been on O'Reilly or Sean Hannitys show or heck maybe even Larry Elder 790AM radio) They have been takling alot about gun crontrol the past few days. Hannity went off last night saying he was a CCW holder. Anyway, they were interviewing some congressman or senator where he made a comment on the lines of "california already has gun laws in effect that the rest of the US should use"

I applaud all of you who attended this and who will attend tonight. Keep up the good work!! I hate all the negativity on the board telling others to “do nothing.”

I also dig the advice here reminding people to show up looking professional since the anti's paint us all as some vigilante with a 50 cal wearing cammo.

No one really knows, and the percentages can vary quite a bit by state. Some estimates put households with guns at near 50% in this country, with about 1/3 of all people owning guns.

Default Request for info before meeting tonight

Does anyone know if these meetings were Thompson's idea or is it coming from a legislative committee recommendation? I'm suspicious it is a strategy session element to guide public opinion and stir up emotions. We must confront it either way but knowing would temper my response at and after the meeting.

Make sure to ask him "where in the 2A does it mention hunting?" This has NOTHING to do with wildlife and natural resources. It has to do with self defense. Wish I could make it but im working night shifts in Sacramento all week.

Legal Community Against Violence (anti-gun lawyer/activists) sent out a mailing to their E-mail list promoting attendance at these specific meetings, including dates/locations.

Just got home. Predom pro-gun. Thompson thinks he's leading the Pelosi parade but if he is smart, he'll vote "present" on any gun ban BS. Some statistical BS being thrown out by LE also. Obvious to me at the close, they knew they were not scoring points on much of anything. I feel your (polite, firm and constructive) voice matters on this issue. Y'all get your butts to these meetings!

I get the impression that with all this anti gun press is really stirring people up. People, are doing research and slowly choosing sides. Next thing you know it won't be a blue and red state nation, it will be a pro / anti gun state nation. Lol

Get up and make your point. I found two minutes goes very quickly. So don't ramble. In reflashing the meeting last night. I think the most hard hitting points are:

First thing I would say is ask Thompson to call for a moratorium on action to calm overreactions on both sides. The Administration is inventing another "crisis". Ask him not to be a pawn in the politcal game.

2nd Amendment is not about hunting. It is about protecting citizens from an overreaching government such as the soft tyranny we see today. Period. Move on.

They are wrong. Armed guards do belong in schools. quote this article:
Robert Bernat: A Reluctant Vote in Favor of Armed School Guards
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...favor+of+armed

Main point is you are there to say you do not support an assault weapons ban nor a magazine restriction. And you can only through your support behind a representative that recognizes a mental health issue from a magazine issue. Good luck, I wish I could be up there.
