How many rounds before major service/replacement?
Just curious how many rounds your lets say top 3 guns have seen, before you need to do a service beyond a standard cleaning or maybe replace parts? Sorry if this is a noob question, I'm fairly new and don't have anyone I could ask this so I get my advice from this forum

I am at 30-40 thousand rounds on my customized 2005 XD 40 Service bitone. I detail strip the slide and clean all the areas, once in a while. Other times I just field strip, clean, and lube. I use it for competitions and plinking. I also shoot pretty mild loads as I reload all of my ammo. Hotter loads would probably cause more wear. There isn't a lot to go wrong with a well built gun.

Your gun? I doubt it. What other sage advice can you add? . |

There's an Uzi at Machine Gun Vegas that's seen well over 3 million rounds.
I have to laugh at people who think their gun will fall apart after 5k. If you take care of them, guns will outlast you, your kids, and your kid's kids. Even a lorcin.

How many miles will a car go before needing a major overhaul? Yea, it not only depends on the make and model but also the conditions it was operated in, types of lubes used and even simply the exact vehicle. You can take two consecutive wigits off the assembly line and one might outlast the other by ten times or more.

I think any high quality gun will last a lot longer than that. Where are you getting this figure?

I just shoot, clean and oil til something wears out (usually springs) or breaks.
Repair/replace part and repeat. You will be amazed and surprised how long a maintained gun will function. It can be measured in decades.

I have a old 12ga double barrel shotgun that I personally have over 15,000 rounds through(no idea about the previous owners), hasn't needed anything except basic cleaning.
GP100, I'm over 5000 and nothing but cleaning. 10/22 no freaking idea how many rounds, but only replacements have been because I wanted to, not because something broke

And claim "only 200 rounds down the pipe" like everyone else.

As for the original question I don't see what else you can do preemptively before your gun breaks? Maybe if the manual suggests you replace certain parts after a certain number of rounds, otherwise just keep shooting and cleaning it.

I have a Kimber custom TLE II with over 11,000 rounds through it. I replaced the recoil spring about 1000 rounds ago because it was cheap and I felt like it. That gun has never malfunctioned on me.
I also have a Glock 23c that was a retired range rental when I bought it. I've put probably 8,000 rounds through it myself. Who knows how many hundreds of thousands went through it before I got it. The rifling in the barrel is barely visible at this point but it still shoots straight. I haven't replaced anything on this one and it just keeps on running. The key is maintainance. If you keep them clean and lubed pretty much any gun with outlast you. |

One of my Glocks (G22) has about 16k rounds thru it, mix of .40 & .357sig... changed out the original OEM guide rod/spring around 10k rounds (brass ejecting into low orbit) , just general cleaning every 500 rounds or so, detail clean few times a year...
Aside from some holster wear, it could probably pass off as less than 2k rounds to someone who didnt know any better. |

Depends on gun there is guns that were designed to not take high round counts the Sigma 380 comes to mind. I actually own dozens of guns I've fired 200 or less rounds out of call me a liar if it makes you feel better for some reason.

Between 2k-5k rounds for a recoil springs, depending on caliber and size, Glock 27 on the short end, full size 1911 shooting soft rounds on the other.
All other action springs at 10k. All non action springs (mag release, SIG de-cocking spring, etc) when necessary. Just keep the spares around, it sucks to have to wait a few weeks for replacements. |
