Maggots on my rack
So the wife had me out in the garage gettin all the Xmas stuff out. I notice a fine grey/silver powder at the base of one of my racks. I grabbed the flashlight and looked closer and saw tons of live and dead maggots eating the hair/scalp area of this rack. This would make sense if this rack was fresh but it's from 2008. I looked 5 ft down the same shelf at my big velvet rack from 2011 and there wasnt a single bug on it. And this maggots are tiny and brownish color, maybe an 1/8" long and 1/16" wide. I did a google search with no results. Anybody know what they are and why they chose the 4 year old hard horned forky instead of the 1 year old big velvet?

No that's just what they are called, because your grandma puts them on the floor of her closet to keep moths in the house from eating holes in your gandpas suits. But that's not your generation I guess. They aren't use much these days. LOL You can get them at a hardware store. LOL

I'm an aware of mothballs and the obnoxious smell that comes from them. I had just never heard of them being called "moth crystals". But yes I do agree that most people from this generation (I don't claim these skinny jean wearing, tree hugging hippys as my generation) would know what moth balls are.
Nobody has any theories as to why the bugs went for the 4 year old kill vs the 1 year old kill.

Try putting some No Pest Strips in the vicinity of your mount, they work pretty well. I've also found that dog flea collars will also help eliminate infestations. I wouldn't put them in my closet, but I'd have no problem placing something like that in my garage. |

I think I had the same critters on a deer shoulder mount 3-4 years ago so I hit my mount with a can of raid. In retrospect that was probably not a good idea as I didn't consider what raid may do to damage the mount but it did get rid of them.

There are moth species who feed on hair and old tissue. It is most likely moth larva. These are the same ones who eat your clothes, carpet, and mounts. The other option would be that you skull became damp and was infcted with dromestid or actual fly maggots, but they need moisture.

Maggots on your rack? That sounds like a personal problem buddy. I would get that checked out by the Doc.

Yes.
"You can find them between the little Moth wings..." Actual reply from a young, beautiful, lady at an Albertson's which my daughter works. It caught me surprise cause I didn't realize she knew me.
