Marking brass
The local range says you can only pick up your own brass, and you have to mark it and show it to the rangemaster before you shoot. What's the best way to mark it so that I can identify it's mine?

Yeah no doubt.
Some guy made a machine that you stick in two markers in (one on each side) and it spins around and you just jam your bullets into it and it makes rings around your shells. Everyone was carrying on like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. The guy had a movie of it on you tube even. It was kinda funny but reall all of that trouble for marking brass? Wow. LoL. What range is this though? I sure want to avoid it also.

Get the multi-color pack of sharpies with the wider tips. You will find some colors mark better than others. If you cut/frey the tips with a razor, they will spread out a bit, making a more distinguishable mark. Line rounds up in a block and you can do row after row pretty efficiently.

Nothing that coats the case with a layer of stuff that will flake and chip is a good idea, just stick to marker ink. Paint will create swarf that chips off and gets everywhere, mags, chamber, action, baaad juju!

I'll bet I can make some fixture for less than $5 that can do the same thing. Thanks all for replying. |

all depending on the other ranges in the area, I wouldnt shoot at a place that "Makes" me mark my brass. On the other hand, I get my brass super clean and high polished. Its easier for me to find among the other brass at the range. Plus I am pretty anal in my process for cleaning brass. That still doesn't mean I wont pick up every piece I see...LOL

Yeah, Mr.Shooter is the one and damn it looks expensive...
I think that they DO come out looking all cool like, but it is just a sharpie, find another place to shoot as well. THAT place is ghey.

I have one caliber that I mark with a file. I put a small flat spot on each rim, its permanet and does not hurt the function. If you are wondering why, its because those rounds go in a rifle with a very tight chamber.

I mark my brass with a sharpie marker. I use one of those plastic trays that come in a box of factory ammo and put the round nose down in the tray. I spin the round while holding the sharpie against the side of the casing. It's fast and easy.

I just mark the primer with a Sharpie or you can put a slash or X mark on the bottom of the case. If you are talking about Reed's, they are actually pretty cool about picking up your brass just don't go in to my lane and pick up my brass. :-)

Just use a sharpie like everyone has said. I just open up the box and run it across the bottom. Super fast. I just recently sorted brass that had been in a box for at least 15 years and they still had the markings from when u when to a range in the Bay Area.

For rifle in particular, it's not just about the money savings of picking up the brass. It's all the time you spent prepping the cases to begin with! Pocket swaging, uniforming, flash hole, etc. if you take it that far takes time. Plus those brass are now just a short bump away from being back at the perfect dimensions.

Some guys buy brass and load them so they know how many times brass has been fired. I usually run a sharpie along the bottoms while the cartridges are sitting nose down in a box. But brass generally lies on its side, so it's easier to see the mark if it's on the brass walls. |

I use one of these. One dot by headstamp for each reloading.

Must be Targetmasters, Reeds would not do that. At least to a GOB. Or it's up the peninnsula with all the dems, or in the east bay with all the Oakland shooters.
Definitely time to find a new range though if that's the policy AND they make good on it. |

by the way, the easiest way to avoid this problem is to stop shooting semi automatics. No brass searching, and if a range tries to take the brass away from you that never hits the ground, well I can tell them where they can put MY brass!
