RDS and co-witness iron sights.
Can someone explain the advantages of co-witnessing RDS with iron sights. Other then having back up in case of RDS failure, I don't really see the point of it.
In fact, lining up iron sights with red dot, seem to take longer, then just using the red dot. Also, removing the rear sight and using the dovetail to mount RDS, let me use the same holster most of the time. |

I use a red dot but if I encounter a battery failure the advantage is I have sights that still work. Hence "backup sights". as far as speed I had more issues with acquiring the dot on a non-co-witness setup possibly due to lack of practice but YMMV.

For some folks the front sight acts as a reference point to help locate the dot.

My suggestion is not to have an absolute co-witness. Having your irons in the lower 1/3rd is my preference. Otherwise you may have a very cluttered view able image.
I shoot mini-holos primarily and have several different models equipped. I offer this as to establish a point of reference. Its one thing to offer an opinion on this very versatile sight enhancement without actually having used it much. Melted is also better and my preferred over any other. Keep in mind some minis sit higher the others. Burris, Delta Point Pro are just a couple that require higher then suppressor sights to be able to see opens through the glass. The older Delta points and of course Trijicons sit lower due to their design. |
