Persian Mausers VZ98/29
I've been hunting for one of these for years and kicking myself for not buying one back in 2010 when this hobby / addiction kicked off and Samco was still around.
I found one that after shipping/transfer will cost me $700. No bayonet, no test target, decent shape...however it is parkerized not blued. Did some reading and it seems Samco parked some of these due to corrosion issues ? Is there a way to undo this or would it be cost prohibitive? What do you guys think? Part of me says buy it and get another when it comes up, the other part is saying be patient and get a cherry blued one. |

Hoping some of the existing samco stock gets its way out to the public. Any updates on who bought it ? |

Priced high IMO. $550 will get you one of the "used" ones on GB all the time. The park finish is the deal breaker for me. I lucked out with my unissued one for $605 on Gun Broker mid 2015.
Keep searching, those Czech made Persian Mausers are magnificent rifles.

Years ago they sold "no blue" Persian Mausers. I picked up three of them when they were $199/each. They weren't literally "no blue", but the bluing and stock finish had been damaged. They looked like unissued models that had been damaged in some misguided attempt to clean off the cosmoline...possibly with chlorinated cleaner of some type. This was typical of what they looked like... They cleaned up nicely...

Sold my unissued one three years ago and regretted it, picked one up two weeks ago at the Nampa, Idaho gun show for $500, said he had to sell it to reduce his collection, about 90% with a few dings on wood and pristine internals.

They're beautiful Mausers, would love to get one myself. But for the $700, I'd just hold out and keep looking for a blued example. A recently parkerized rifle at that price is way too high IMHO.

That's saying a lot because they look stunning. I have only taken my Persian out once, it was frighteningly accurate during that trip.

There were many instances of this type over the years. . . their warehouse was flooded several times and many of the rifles on the bottom rows of the pallets were rusted beyond belief before the damage was discovered. There are good reasons why none of the dealers in quality merchandise were interested at all in bidding on this stuff! |

Wow, now that is useful knowledge! Thanks Dennis. When the auction went down a few months ago I saw some pics of the space and nothing looked even remotely good. Seems like Samco was a good business until about 2000 and then they went downhill. Maybe Century can "fix" those persians.

Dennis, do you know what the story was on Samco's "no blue" Persians?
Years ago I bought several and restored them. They seemed to be in very good condition except for the bluing and stock finish.

One has to remember that they were stored since 1988 in a warehouse in muggy Miami with ABSOLUTELY NO air conditioning (humidity and high temperature for most of the year is usually VERY unkind to blued steel). Last edited by empirearms; 04-27-2016 at 10:40 AM.. |

The Persian Mauser rifles are some of prettiest military rifles ever made... As far as I know the 98/29's were the only Mauser rifle made with a high gloss finish on their stocks...
The crest on the Czech made rifles is just beautiful... The crest on the Persian made carbine (M-49) is a bit on the sad side... I call it the cowardly lion (as in the wizard of Oz) crest... Comparison of the rifles side by side.

Any one know of just a barrel available for a Persian .Mine shoots great but after about 5 or 6 rounds it drops 2 1/2 feet at 500 meters and stays there till the barrel cools down .Tried every thing from free float to binding and same thing every time .

Any idea with test target/bayonet what I'd be looking at? Looks like nice variants with bayonet are going for 7-850. I'm guessing with the target id be in the $1k range?
This is from 2011, but it does make me tight in the pants. http://www.gunauction.com/buy/10693445 Last edited by hollowpoint67; 05-10-2016 at 12:53 PM.. |

Yeah 700-1000 for a very nice example, more towards 1k+ for a matching bayonet.
Another option is to look for a Model 49, which is a true Iranian mauser made with tooling set up by the Czechs. They are not as nice per say in terms of fit and finish but they are still very good, and all made in Iran. You can find prime examples of those for $500-$800, depending. SVT showed one (the short rifle) in the pics above. |

Just as an aside...these are capable of great accuracy. I bought a Persian 98/29 that was excellent in every respect...except the prior owner had drilled and tapped it.
The good thing was that it went at auction for peanuts. Also, I was able to determine just how accurate these rifles can be. I put a 10X Bushnell scope on this one and shot this group @ 100 yards And this at 300 yards

You have to include Swedish Mausers in that discussion. They're very accurate.

Holy smokes some people got some deals, if I didn't already have a deal pending I would've been all over these.
