Can't really tell, but the barrel's muzzle may well have a thread protector on it.
I also wonder why the guy is not putting his front sight all the way out, on top of his railed gas block. Might as well take advantage of the tad extra sight radius, and I'd always rather have my front sight on the bbl than on a float tube' rail etc. It also looks like that's an ARMS #40 rear flip sight but then my eyes are tired...

Good eyes, Ted.
(Plus, I was looking at the pic in a window on my laptop.)

[QUOTE=Technical Ted]
Not sure who makes the gas block (railed gas blocks never interested me, so I don't follow them at all), but if you look closely, the rail on top is not the same height as the rail on the handguard or upper receiver, so putting the front BUIS there would cause zeroing issues. It look to me like the front sight can be raised up if it was put on the gas block. It's kind of "z" shaped now, and maybe could be extended? |

The problem is the older railed gas blocks RRA used aren't Picatinny spec - the slots are too narrow - and the YHM front sights won't fit in them, because their recoil lug is designed for a snug fit in a Picatinny slot, as the best ones are. I had this problem on a JT varmint kit, but the gas block is the same as the RRA varminter they were selling. Amusingly, I bought the YHM gas block rail flip-up from a guy who was selling it because it didn't fit on his RRA, then I had the exact same gas block! This gas block is different from the one I worked with before (different barrel, of course), and may be up to spec, but it's very frustrating for a major AR vendor to be putting stuff out that's not up to spec. In their defense, they never called it a Picatinny gas block... Last edited by maxicon; 02-05-2007 at 8:11 AM.. |

I see Troy iron sights, Tangodown Battlegrip pistol grip, Magpul CTR stock, Badger tactical Latch, and a Larue Tactical rail system.

Hey, I built that rifle! How did I miss this?
The reason for that gas block is because it was cheap, and because it clamps on rather than using set screws. One of the dimples for set screws on the bottom of the barrel is not at bottom dead center, so the original YHM lo-pro gas block was not rotationally aligned. CMMG offered to replace it, but we were in a hurry to get it built. This is a rather unique barrel profile (CMMG M10), and the gas block can actually be moved back further (as in a carbine length gas system). Care must be taken to properly align (with the gas port) and secure the gas block. This particular gas block will probably be replaced in the near future. The accuracy seems to be great with this barrel. It's sort of hard to shoot with just the BUIS, especially due to my lack of skills with iron sights. The first 3 rounds fired were around 1.5" at 50 yards with surplus Radway. I don't know if boosterboy has had any better luck with it, but I doubt it Maybe we'll finally get around to testing the accuracy using my scope and some Black Hills Match with 77gr SMKs.
