CCW for us guys with a gut
Yes I know, another "which CCW gun" thread...but with a bit "extra" (har har).
Looking for a 9mm CCW, been looking at the m&p9c, shield 9,and the PX4 sub compact. Trying to stay in the $500 range. Any others to look at? Just a couple that I know didnt work for me... XD9sub baby glocks

I'm no expert but I figure if you tell us how you are carrying it might help with the suggestions

I'm a pretty big guy and I found that they keys are a great belt and a great holster. I carry a Glock 23 when I wear jeans and a Kahr PM9 in the summertime. I have to carry at 430ish oclock position.
I've tried a ton of holsters and my favorite by far are the Crossbreed supertucks with combat cut. Once again I've tried a bunch of different belts and nothing works like the Wilderness tactical belts. |

A lot will depend on the holster choice and the choice of clothing. Heavy plaid shirts break up the outline. I'm a bit on the fluffy side and I find that an M&P works well in these but everyone is different.
This is a very low riding Custom Carry Concepts Quick Cover IWB. This is a Black Dog Concealment OWB.

Those of us with DUNLOP (It Dun Lop'd over our belt) actually have an easier time than the skinny guys "concealing" a handgun.
Ever see a skinny guy with a S & W N frame on him? He looks like he has a Buick on his hip.

Have you considered the sr9c? It's slimmer, but about the same size. I didn't like the m&p compact models very much, and I am a big m&p fanboy. The m&pc seems a little bulky for a compact model.

Id go m&p9c, a very close second would be the SR9c. I CCW daily and love both. Give the ruger a chance, it's a GREAT pistol.

Like most it depends on how you carry and if you want to dress around it or not.
The Sig 938 would be awesome if you like cocked and locked. If you want something smaller, PM9 size without the Kahr, check out the Beretta Nano and Sig P290RS. If you want baby glock/M&P9c size, the M&P9c is fantastic. I'm a skinny guy and might have trouble concealing it without a sweatshirt if I'm doing any bending over. Carrying it correctly with a sweatshirt, I can get away with almost anything. If you are looking for single stack, the Shield is probably about as good as it gets. The Beretta Nano and Sig P290RS should be thinner than the M&P9c but I don't think they are truly single stack (really don't know for sure). If you can work with the trigger and don't mind a safety, the LC9 has been good for many people. The Walther PPS is also good, just accessories aren't as easily found for it. Then there is always the 2-3" revolvers. The LCR, SP101, and the S&W 686 come to mind. Most of this is personal preference. Hope this helps. |

As others have suggested, check out the SR9c. Although, I find them bigger at the slide than a M&PC. I will be getting a M&P40c as my primary carry and a shield in 9 and 40 when they come in. However my FS M&P40 will also be on my CCW. Check out the combat cut crossbreed iwb holsters carried at about the 4 or 5 o'clock position. Should be perfect. A friend daily carries a Sig GSR in a crossbreed. He cannot say enough about how comfortable and easy it is to carry and conceal. Although, he carries at the 230 position. Go figure.
Personally, from your choices, I would choose a M&P9c over anything else (until the shield comes in).

what exactly "didn't work"?
what o'clock were you trying to carry? I'm not a CCW guy but I doubt MUCH diff in the carry part of CCW between various small guns, as far as how it will pinch your gut. If you are stuck on 9mm(auto) and having probs with the carry part of CCW I'd try the Nano. http://www.berettausa.com/products/nano/ |

G19 in a rocketman holster at 3:00. I'm quite a tub and I have no issues squishing this thing around in my day to day. In the cold weather like it is now (MT), I do OWB with a suede lined safariland ALS holster with jackets or sweat shirts covering..no big deal if they don't cover, it's Montana.
The Rocketman holster is priced well, made extremely well, is very minimal like the glock 19 is. I chose the G19 for the best weight/capacity/cost to shoot ratio which of course is $499 all day at AIM...when there's not a crazy gun buy panic going on...$535 for the Gen4 which is unneeded. The gen 3 G19 is a perfect gun. Of course with your 10 round limit, might as well do a G30 or G26 I reckon. Or as I've done lately, OWB carry a big fat heavy Kimber Stainless II with 8+1!

M&P 9c is a little bigger than the baby glocks, so it they didn't work the 9c likely won't either.
Seems like it won't be possible to find a retail Shield for a few more months. I'm pretty 'fluffy' myself and the G27 works fine. |

What "works" as a CCW piece is far more a matter of holster and clothing than the gun size itself. I have "a bit of a gut" and have carried just about everything from a .25 Browning to a 1911. In general, I have found ways to be uncomfortable with the .25 (Thunderwear under tight jeans) and quite comfortable with a 1911 or Browning High Power (shoulder holster under a "tailored for carry" suit).
For typical IWB behind the hip carry, thinner is better, but I've spent quite a few 12 to 18hr days carrying a 6-shot snubby that way and have not had any problems so long as I wear 2" larger pants and a good gunbelt.

What degree of cant are you okay with? FBI style (15 degrees I believe) will tuck a larger handled gun better in most positions rather than a straight cant. Just IMO.

Main issue is in texas heat, overshirts / Jackets are not exactly fun to wear. I was looking at the desantis intruder or comp tac holsters.

Anyone with experience on the Kahr CM9? Price is nice, but initially have heard some not so great things about them.

I do have a tiny pocket P380 but that's my better than nothing gun. My Kahr K40 did drop it's old extractor after a few of dozen racks to clear type 2 & 3 on-handed with weak and strong hand using my belt. (it's one of those advanced "what you do if" techniques that is pretty extreme but worth knowing)

I can't comment on the CM9 but I front pocket carry my PM9 every day. I am an obese bastid and I can hide my Glock 23 in in a CB Supertuck under my 5XB polo shirts. The fat just comes up and around the top of the holster so the gun is "faired in" and has no outline. The only advantage to being fat.

Seems to me the big guys can carry just about anything short of a 45-70 revolver! Sure might not be comfortable but better than the skinnnys. I am 20#s overweight, and its real hard to see even a full size pistol in a good IWB type holster on me.

The Desantis intruder is pretty nice for the price. It's very comfortable, and it didn't take much time to break in. After a few days, I didn't like the 0 degree cant on it. With holsters being so damn expensive I decided to punch a new hole out and moved one of the loops to create an approx 15 degree cant. It hides the handle of my G23 very well now, and depending on the shirt I'm wearing it sits at 3 or 4.5 o'clock. Love it even more at that angle now and saved a little bit of money for the meantime.

Hum... I tried an IWB Desantis SofTuk with my 1911 and let me just say...Not gonna happen. Might be the size of the weapon might be the funky clip I don't know but It was a pain in the A** to get on and then stuck out like a sore thumb in anything but a small of the back carry. I guess I'll stick with my OWB Safariland paddle for now.

Define "with a gut". The answer for a dude with a bit of a boiler is different than the answer for some tub of goo who can't see his feet and has a FUPA.

Thanks all.
I actually ended up with something I never planned on. Price was right, size is good, and I dig the feel of it overall. Picked it up for just over 300.
