Default Android TV box?

Do I want a Android TV box ?
We have a old firestick and a old Roku
It looks like a Android box would be able to record TV shows and some movies? For watching without Wi-Fi and would also have Bluetooth.
We have Netflix and Dish and would like to drastically cut back the Dish programming or get rid of it.

There are some devices (not always Android?) that will record, and as pass-through, but I know nothing about them, but "gamers" will probably chime in.

I use a Droidbox(.co.uk), 3x T8-Mini I got for about $105 including shipping.
Their devices come with a remote, and quick response time, almost immediate for most things.

I mostly use it for Kodi movie streams, and between youtube, Netflix, Hulu, Kodi(, and China), I can't remember the last time I watched DirecTV.
Big Clive, AvE, and a few others drop enough content to keep me learning.

as a new entry user to the "wizardry" of getting free tv, movies and live sporting events......i suggest you get a fire tv, and not use the firestick. (the firestick will work......but a couple months in, you will get the fire tv. there were concerns as to if the new fire tv box was "locked down"......it is not. in fact....it is pretty zippy. once you have whatever you decide as your box, go to "supreme builds" on you tube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJs...PUdeNIxvcFeH_w everything you need to know about loading your box is covered here and it is so simple and easy for the beginner. do not get involved with the DroidBox or the DroidBox T-8 mini until you get some experience. my shipped with outdated software and was not fun trying to update. btw....my DroidBoxes never updated once upon owning them. if you want great performance.....get the low end Nvidia Shield. (btw.....the best build on my boxes right now is the Titanium build) the people that are making the supreme builds videos on you tube.....are the people that make Titanium. they also have a great facebook page to join, and you can ask individual question that will almost get answered immediately. pm me if you need any other info or help.

the reason why i keep pointing newbies to the fire tv.....is because there are a ton of user friendly videos on you tube for the fire tv. once he gets confident on his loading skills.....then .........

We have a slightly older Roku and a very new Amazon FireTV. Like both.

However, you should keep in mind that recording movies to watch later, may be a DMCA violation.

No matter how the Kodi people spin it, the plugins that let you watch movies still in the theater or that you don't own are still piracy. Two of the plug-in makers have stopped supporting their plug-ins because of DMCA threats by the MPAA.

If you're going to run those plug-ins make sure you get a paid VPN service and run behind that.

Netflix is now allowing you to download some of their TV shows and movies so that would be the plus I am seeing with the Android box over the fire and Roku most look like you can plug in a flash drive or hard drive soo the wife can watch tv while we're we are camping out in the dessert

as stated above.......when you are fooling around with Kodi......it is pretty much a given that you always use a vpn, good advice always. i use PIA, very simple to use. a lot of people get frustrated with a vpn, because it will cut into your internet speed a bit and as a result will cause buffering. i was at 20 mb and at times would have to shut off my vpn. now i am at 100 mb......and all is well.

Looks like droidbox.co.uk is having a sale for up to 50% off, but the T8 Mini normally sells for about $85+shipping, and is priced right now at $126+shipping, but the T8 SE (32GB of RAM rather than 16gb in the Mini) is the same price, so they are bloated for Christmas, it seems. Black Friday code DBXBLACK brings them down to about $94.54+shipping right now, so they are almost regular price. You will get dinged for shipping, as I did on my first, but bought 2 on my next order which brought the price down a bit, however they "corrected this" shipping discount, I believe.

T8 SE Specs:
Processor: 2.0 GHz Quad Core Cortex A53 Amlogic S905X
Operating System: Android 7.1.2 Nougat & LibreELEC 8 (Kodi 17)
GPU: Mali-450 MP Penta Core
RAM: 2GB DDR3
Internal Memory: 32GB
Expandable Memory: SD Storage
Google Play Store: Yes
XBMC/Kodi 17 Krypton Yes
HDMI: 2.0
USB Ports: 3(1x OTG)
1000 Ethernet: Yes
Bluetooth: Yes
Flash Support: Yes
HD Video Playback: Yes, Supports 1080p HD Videos
4K Video Playback: Yes, Supports 4K Videos
Video Support: H.265/H.264/H.263/VC1/WMV/MOV/MKV/AVI/RM/RMVB/FLV/MPEG-1/MPEG-2/MPEG-4
Music Support: MP3/WMA/APE/FLAC/AAC/AC3/WAV
Photo Support: JPEG/BMP/GIF/PNG
Music Support: MP3/WMA/APE/FLAC/AAC/AC3/WAV
Gaming: Supports 3D gaming
I/O Ports: 3 USB 2.0 (1x OTG), SD card, 1000 Ethernet, HDMI, Optical Audio out, Power Port
WIFI: Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n/ac - 2.4GHz and 5GHz (Dual Band)
Power: DC 5v/2A
Accessories: HDMI Cable, Power Adapter, Remote Control, User Manual
Color: Black
Dimensions: 165mm x 105mm x 21mm

I think the T8 Mini has a faster proc than 2.0ghz procs in the SE, but they modded the description to show it as slower to sell more of the T8 SE.

LibreELEC on these is pretty cool, just enough Android the run Kodi, but there appear to be some glitches w/that (at least on my T8 Mini), and the full Android variant on these works better w/Kodi.

Nice custom interface on these, and pretty-quick on response times.

One weird issue we have is that the something can't seem to keep up w/bluetooth and processing as quickly compared to a PC (even a miniPC/MPC is better with an Intel Pentium-D) and controllers (Bluetooth, or proprietary wireless dongles) seem to have some lag, and response times are hindered, but not as bad as the old ARM Android devices. My lady noticed it playing Dr. Mario the most where timing is "critical".
Might be the USB or Bluetooth controller bus limitation, or something... I am not up on all that though.

Get a MiBox from Wally world. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mi-Box-An...3=2280&veh=sem

It has a lot of features that off-brand Android boxes don't--namely, the Android TV interface.

B&H Photo has the 16GB remote only version of NVIDIA's awesome ShieldTV on sale for $143 ($30 instant savings in cart) with free shipping. B&H is a good company and the ShieldTV is without a doubt the best Android TV streaming media player. It works great with Kodi and if you add an external hard it works as a Plex server. Amazon and Newegg have it for slightly more.

Sholling is dead on........i started with all sorts of inexpensive android boxes, and i am now with the nvidia shield. far far it is absolutely the best. sure there are cheaper boxes out there, but by the time you get some experience under your belt..........you will eventually end up with a shield. do yourself a favor and buy a shield now, and save yourself the money of not "learning"....on the cheaper boxes.

Many are not... ~$1200/year for something that only occasionally gets watched sounds like an idea my lady likes, mainly because she does not pay the bill.

I’m not a huge Kodi user and over the years just haven't seen the attraction of vanilla Android boxes for TV other than the price of the cheaper boxes, but, hey, I’m open minded. Recently I needed a device (Android box, Shield TV, Roku, etc) for a secondary TV that does not have a cable box. To fill that role and satisfy my curiosity after all of the glowing recommendations on Calguns I obtained the often praised DroidBOX to see what the attraction was.

In Android mode the DroidBOX opens to an attractive menu page that is easily navigated via the included infrared remote. For navigating much beyond that, including setting up apps like Kodi you’re going to need a $15-20 RF remote/air-mouse with a built-in mini keyboard or a wireless HTPC keyboard like Logitech’s K400+. Not a big deal but it adds another $15-30 to the final cost of the product. I'm less impressed with the included applications because DroidBOX seems to have put almost no effort into obtaining TV optimized applications for their device. Versions of popular apps that can easily be used without a mouse or touchpad. In fact, their version of Netflix will not even display videos on my 1080P TV (black screen) and the Google Play Store version is not compatible. Basically, the DriodBOX lacks even the most basic level of functionality that you’d expect from a phone or a $50 Amazon Fire 7 Android tablet or even a low-end Fire TV. The one video application that did work sort of okay with the supplied remote was YouTube, but only with Android’s notification and navigation bars taking up part of the screen. In other words, unless your sole focus is on Kodi this thing is, in my opinion, an abortion and in has since been replaced by a cheap Roku. Perhaps it’s a decent Kodi box, but I’m not into watching pirated video feeds and didn’t get that far simply because vanilla Android TV failed to meet even my most basic minimum expectations - Netflix and Amazon Prime at 1080P (really 4K at this price point) without a mouse and YouTube in 100% full screen mode. In my opinion Kodi is icing on a cake and not a device’s minimum functionality. If you’re feeling wonky and are looking for a pretty crippled HTPC like experience or just something to stick Kodi on then the DroidBOX is a cheap way to get there. On the other hand, if you prefer a no muss no fuss TV appliance experience like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, built-in TV apps, or a cable box then vanilla Android TV is not for you.

In contrast NVIDIA’s Shield TV runs the real Android TV OS and interface and the whole experience was designed from the get-go for use with the simple Bluetooth remote that they include in the box – no mouse needed. NVIDIA includes a number of remote control optimized applications, including an Android TV only version of the Google App Store, and while you'll find fewer applications than the phone/tablet version, all of the apps are optimized for a TV/remote control experience. Versions of YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go and most of the other popular video and music services, all of which play 100% full screen and none of which requires a mouse or touch screen. The exception is Kodi, which is just easier to set up using a mouse and keyboard, but once setup it works fine with the remote. For those that do not need full blown Kodi, NVIDIA includes a full version of Plex/Plex Server which I use to access my large digitized music collection. There are also a ton of video games available and it has access to NVIDIA's subscription game service. In my opinion, on a 1 to 10 scale it’s an “9”, limited only by the number of optimized apps. If they add a Shield TV optimized version of Amazon Music unlimited it will in my opinion be perfection - a for-real “10”. It’s every bit as as easy to use as a Roku or cable box but much-much more.

Bottom line, in my opinion, unless your sole focus is Kodi, the next time that someone suggests “investing” in a vanilla Android TV device, including the DroidBOX, do yourself a HUGE favor and ignore them and buy a Shield TV instead – you’ll be glad that you did.

Edit: I canceled the cheap Roku (a cheap replacement for the sucky DroidBOX) and ordered another Shield TV.

Nvidia Shield is hands down the best android box out there, no other box is even close to compare Get it $150 shipped is a great deal. Hard wire it with cat6 so it doesn't run on wifi. I own a firestick that I don't use anymore since I got this. You won't regret spending the extra $$ to get the Ferrari of android boxes.

Why don't you buy her a 10" 32GB Amazon Fire tablet, drop a 256GB microSD card into it and let her watch prerecorded Netflix on that?

I just purchased the Nvidia Shield & a blue tooth key board on Amazon, came to $185.
I sure hope this solves the freezing & digital stutter I have had on my generic Android box

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One thing I dont like, It seems like it is google based, I hate hardware that comes with total google crap.
I will be looking for a workaround to delete google apps & their snoop crap

Android TV is a Google operating system and unless you sideload you are limited to the few apps in Google's Android-TV app store. It's not the vanilla Android app store including TV optimised version of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc plus Kodi. I'm not sure what you plan to use the Shield for but it's a specialized Android TV device that just works. Play with it a bit before you make too many changes. BTW I use a Logitech K400+ HTPC keyboard with mine but only for setup, mice and keyboards are not needed to navigate Android TV or use Android TV apps.

I havent tried Terraruim TV, I use KODI-Durex on my Android 8" tablet & mecool box

I will certainly give a review of the Nvidia Shield in the next week.
Its nearly double the cost of the generic Android boxes , so I'm sure we are all interested in the performance.

I bought mine based on Shollings-nine_mil_thrill review....

edit: any apps I run are dL on my computer as apk & installed on USB
generally just KODI & a build, I do connect my NAS to the media box also.
Im not a fan of google play store....

Kodi is in the Android TV Play Store. It's normal Kodi and not a customised version.
