Arrow [HOW TO]: Post images that never disappear on CG

There are other ways to do this of course, but this I've found is fastest. You do not need to register, or sign in, or anything to use imgur.

1. Upload your picture to www.imgur.com (pro-tip: you can paste any image, or drag files directly onto the imgur home page)

2. Click the little down arrow, then Get share links:

3. Click Copy from the BBCode (Forums) area:

4. Paste into your Calguns post. (Ctrl+V on Windows, Command+V on Mac)

Hope this helps!

What if your images appear HUGE?

This happens because imgur preserves the native resolution of your files.
Modern cameras take very high resolution pictures, but you can resize them easily:
  1. After uploading your image, click Edit image
  2. In the box to the top right you'll see the pixel dimensions (width x height) of your image.
    Select one of them and edit it to a lower value like 600. Click into the next box, but don't change anything and it will automatically update as long as lock proportions is checked.
  3. Click Apply on the left side of your screen.
  4. Click Save

Here's what that those steps look like:

OR, here's another secret way to do the same thing. Fast & easy:
When you copy imgur links into Calguns, you should see something like this:
[img]http://i.imgur.com/efUfeBH.jpg[/img]

Just add a lowercase L (l) to the filename before the dot-extension (.jpg in this case):
[img]http://i.imgur.com/efUfeBHl.jpg[/img]

Here's what they look like compared to each other:
efUfeBH.jpg

efUfeBHl.jpg
In this case the original image wasn't really too huge, but you get the point.
You don't have to use "l" there are other options too, but I'd recommend "l" or "h":
Code:
t = Small Thumbnail (160160)
m = Medium Thumbnail (320320)
l = Large Thumbnail (640640) as seen in the example above
h = Huge Thumbnail (10241024)
Happy posting!

From the IMGUR Terms of Service (http://imgur.com/tos):

Quote:
Stuff not to do
... Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do and we will be the judge or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it....
Quote:
Intellectual Property
... With regard to any file or content you upload to the public portions of our site, you grant Imgur a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable worldwide license (with sublicense and assignment rights) to use, to display online and in any present or future media, to create derivative works of, to allow downloads of, and/or distribute any such file or content. To the extent that you delete any such file or content from the public portions of our site, the license you grant to Imgur pursuant to the preceding sentence will automatically terminate, but will not be revoked with respect to any file or content Imgur has already copied and sublicensed or designated for sublicense. ...

This is a how-to post, stickied for Calgunners to find easily.
If you want to discuss hosting elsewhere please make a different thread about it.
I wrote this guide because I'm tired of broken images and clicking attachments on CG.
I am not affiliated with Imgur, it's just a useful tool I've used for years without issue.

To clear things up for CGers who might be concerned:
1. Stuff not to do doesn't relate to forum use of Imgur:

2. The intellectual property language is standard for any third party who lets you upload images. Without such language it would be illegal for them to serve material they don't own the copyright to. It is a non-exclusive license, and you can revoke it by deleting your images from Imgur. This should be no cause for alarm.

I agree that it is necessary in some regards for social media for the 'sharing' function to work with regards to timelines or feeds, but places like Flickr, Zenfolio, and Smugmug do not require a transferable/sublicenseable license to be issued to the them. Thus, I prefer Flickr and Zenfolio for photos.

Zenfolio is a paid service, not really an equitable comparison.
Flickr certainly does require a transferable license. It is owned by Yahoo. Find their ToS here.

Quote:
Yahoo does not claim ownership of Content you submit or make available for inclusion on the Service. However, with respect to Content you submit or make available for inclusion on publicly accessible areas of the Service, you grant Yahoo the following worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and non-exclusive license(s), as applicable:
The point is, this is standard language that should not be of concern to Calgunners.
