Believe me I'm kicking myself as the shotgun was totally rusted out wood was trash. So a full strip and cleaning. Sand blasted, soaked in acetone, painted and baked.
After that job I'm a firm believer in Cerokote. There is no describing how well that stuff works.

OP: You're the guy that did that rusty 1911 project with all the video updates correct? If so this should be good!

AJAX, PM me a list, I'll see what I have in the 870 parts box. I know I have a complete trigger group, and I think I still have a mag spring.

How bad was the surface of the steel, any pitting?

Receiver is coming along nicely.... dug a known good 870 out of storage... will start testing for functionality with the known good parts and the ugly parts

the 3rd round of electrolysis did the trick...

I was able to get the parts from the known good doner 870 into the rusty 870 receiver.

In the process the ejector spring broke, but that was really to be expected.

The receiver is much more pitted than it appeared on initial inspection.... it has a rust type similar to the 1991A1 blood damaged evidence gun, not the buried early 1911. Deep pits surrounded by relatively unmolested surfaces.

Now its a matter of tracking down the following:

barrel (too pretty)
action tube
for-end
action tube nut
mag tube spring
shell stop springs (both sides)
ejector spring
trigger housing pins
topfolding stock (ugly)
ugly for-end wood

she is coming along very nicely

Have you considered ultra sonic cleaning? Might be easier than an ice pick?

Would a used 35 gal blue drum work for a dip tank or would the volume be too great?

It would probably work just fine...

I may have to use an insulator to tie the electrode and work piece togeather in a close proximity but volume doesent play a major role.... except in having to use a lot of elwctrolyte

brownells has most of the internal parts you need for your trigger group: http://www.brownells.com/schematics/...ld-sid115.aspx

they also have the ejector spring and rivet. Interestingly enough they don't sell the shell latches!! Once you have the receiver cleaned up you MIGHT consider buying the shell latches from a gunsmith because you need to stake them in place, AND they have to be on the correct side (yes, there is a left and a right). Gun show??

Just a recap of where we are at...

I have a donor trigger group on order which I'll be robbing the missing parts out of.

Still need a stock, forend, action tube, magtube spring, stock bolt, and trigger group pins

I got a factory mag tube extension brand new if you want it I'll even kick it through the dirt make it look beat up. if you don't want the traditional pistol grip you could always get some wood off EBAY and make a birdhead grip thats what I did for my 870 AOW

haha, if you'll seriously kick it through the dirt, I'll put it on the gun...

Been working on the trigger group.... I now know wayyyyyyy more about 870 fire control groups than I had ever intended on learning.

But thats why I LOVE these kinds of projects.
