Damnit, I really don't want to spend more money right now but there is such a big difference between the price of steel .223 and 5.45 ammo.....how good a deal is this particular upper?

I haven't dealt with it yet, but it looks like most people don't consider it that big a deal.

Yeah I haven't dealt with it either so I can't say much, just from what I've heard it's not worth it.
But ammo being so cheap in 5.45 it's oh so temtpting.
I also hear that 5.45x39 is cheap right now because the surplus supply but once that's gone it'll be a more expensive round and become rare?

good price. paid 615 at rainier, but they dont carry it anymore from what I can tell.
runs great. company claims upper is prepared for the ammo issues. comes with hammer spring. I cicnt use it and have had 2 rounds not fire out of 500, but it was the ammo, because the primer is always deeply hit and my AK74 wouldnt pop them either.
great answer to my expensive ammo blues

What you have heard/read is typical FUD about steel cased ammo. At this moment 1000 rounds of the 5.45x39 is about $100 dollars cheaper its 223 Rem counter part so after 2,000 rounds you would have enough saving to buy a new barrel. Do the math, its worth it.

AA's barrels will last you a lot more than 2,000 rounds.

Seems like a lot of money. I just put together my own for a lot less. Although the black Friday deals are all gone by now.

You only need the bolt & the barrel to just convert an upper you already have - Red X Arms had the complete BCG for $115, and I picked up a barrel from SOTA Arms for $109.

Upper $83
BCG $115
Barrel $109
Free Float Tube $40
Gas Tube $10
Gas Block $17
Flash Hider $6

Complete 5.45x39 upper for $380

Pretty much what I did, but bought stuff that was coated since all I shoot is corrosive ammo. If you clean everything right after you shoot though you'll most likely be fine without the coated parts.

It looks like the upper in the ad is a piston upper and I don't see that included in your build sheet of $380. I am trying to see the upper through a small pic on my phone so I could be wrong.

5.45x39 is the only AR I take out of the safe these days. Thousands of rounds and no FUD Corrosive issues.
Such a great round at a cheap price to shoot. I chronograph-ed 5.56 and 5.45 and the 5.45 was about 200 fps faster. Yes its a LITTLE smaller but it feels the same shooting it through a AR.
Love the round.

BTW the latest windowed Pmags for 5.56 will work with this round. Just a heads up.

Yes Ive heard bad stuff about Model one. It would be better off to order from the listed links about and build one for under 400.00

It is a piston upper. Nicely built and the parts felt solid. Does Adams Arms make a non-piston upper?

TBH, it's only been sitting in the safe The AR was completed in a rush in preparation for AB374 becoming law. I've been too busy with my AKs to even take it out to the range.

The 3rd generation window Pmag? Darn, I don't have enough of those...

When you are out of state, does it take 28 rounds or 30?
Did you have to cut the follower leg?

I bought one, had a stripped lower sitting around. Didn't want to build another AR in the same caliber. So I'll give 5.45 a try.

Im shooting the stuff in the spam cans.

I didnt have to trim anything. I dont know how many rounds they hold because I blocked em at 10.
I know the non windowed you have to trim and play with. The windowed ones are just load em up and shoot. Its like they were made for the round.
If anyone has any questions let me know. Ive shot maybe 4k through it.

I have the LWRC piston 5.45 upper and I love it. A little pricey but the quality is top notch

I've been using the PMAG Gen 2's blocked to 10 rounds with zero issues. Easy and cheap.

Just to clarify since you didn't mention the specific caliber.......you're saying non-windowed .223 30rnd M2 MOE PMAG's work on 5.45x39 without modification?

Yes I use them for both 5.56 and 5.45. They feed fine with zero issues. This is only loading 10 rounds though as I mentioned since they are blocked.

Thanks for posting this. I'm gonna build that set up, should be fun to plink around with. I do have a question about the gas block though. How would you mount front sight? Would This Gas Block work? Or does it have to be low profile as the carbine length tube goes over it? Or just mount optic and be done with it? I do like to shoot irons though. Thanks for any help.

Both the gen2 windowed and non windowed work fine with 10 rounds. If you want to run more the gen2 windowed is your best bet. You will have to tinker with the follower and you should be able to load 28 + 1. (If you leave Ca of course) I run a huldra gas piston 5.45 and another custom I think a voodoo barrel in 7.62x39. I only use corrosive ammo. The only issue I have encountered is light strikes. I just cycle them again without an issue. Several fixes for that also.

Damn, I should have pulled the trigger on that SOTA barrel but had too much going with Christmas. That BA barrel is more than double the price at $225.

Does anyone else make a decent 5.45 barrel that is cheap?

I got the SOTA barrel, it came in on Monday, looks good. I don't know who, or if anyone makes 'decent inexpensive 5.45 barrel' but if I could find Spike's I'd buy it. Their barrels are around $250 and you only gotta buy it once, as Spike's will replace it, should you shoot 10,000 rounds through it and it's no longer accurate.

I went with a mid length tube, so I needed the low profile gas block. A carbine length free float will allow you to use that block.

For my build I didn't go with a front sight, I threw a red dot on it. Going for something like this only mid-ength:

Glad your barrel looks good. Mine from them looked like ****, I even made a thread about it. Very disappoint.
