I'm glad to hear that others struggle with that Ambi too! I have never shot it, but even dry firing it, I can't come close. Practice Practice!

Any chance you will be there on April 2-5?
I just signed up for 2 day on the 4th-5th. Unfortunately, I just had to cancel my trip to Master Prep this week...grrrr

No kidding. Lynwood exit in Barstow isn’t any better.
Didn’t do too bad, shot 18 down in that crazy wind on the precision rifle range.
No DG’s and only 3 graduates. Missed graduate by 5

Tomorrow is supposed to be colder. Not looking forward to it. Hoping to DG on my skill builder course tomorrow but we shall see. Already doing a ton better than in my last 4 day.

For the HCMP students, how much does ammo selection matter?

Like for accuracy? I doubt it matters much. Maybe at 50 yards but even then if I miss itís cause of me and not the ammo. Haha

I agree that ammo selection doesn't make that much difference. Your gun may prefer one ammo over another. The only way to tell is to shoot different ammo side by side.

I tend to get my best groups shooting Fiocchi or Magtech in 9mm. Blazer brass and Speer Lawman tend to be a bit more erratic. I find American Eagle to be a bit dirty.

But the above is just an opinion. your shots may vary!

Of all of the things to concern yourself with for passing the HCM test, ammo selection is close to irrelevant....

Well, we went back for another 4DDHG this past weekend (16th-19th, range 9 then range 36). I ran almost exclusively the S&B 124gr. through my Sig P229 Enhance Elite and did not have any issues. My wife was running her G19 and my son my G17 and were mixing between Aguila and CCI (Lawman), all 124 gr. without issues.

I'm starting to think we may have just had a bad lot of the S&B stuff. One thing that set me off of the S&B was after my wife had those multiple FTF's, the instructor picked up at least 4 of them and was showing her the primer strikes on the FTF rounds and told her "Try not to use S&B, they aren't good ammunition". I was burning up the last 1k rounds I had this past weekend but without any issues my opinion is kind of on the wall with S&B. I could possibly had been the victim of a bad lot?

So we were there with a group of friends from the 16th-19th for another 4DDHG course. So much fun as usual! Started on range 9 then moved to 36 for the last two days.

My goal this trip was to get graduate. Last time out I ended with a 75 so I would have been very happy with a graduate. After the shooting I was down 14 points on the target. Everything felt great timewise and my malfunctions went very well and very fast. When we got our final scores I was both ecstatic and disappointed all at one. Turns out I did not lose a single point for time, procedural, or malfunctions! My final score was the same as on the target... 14. 1 POINT AWAY FROM DG! UGH! Our awesome instructor, Miles, told me "You did outstanding. No points other than misses on paper. If you would have just slowed down on the headshot and rather than beat the buzzer, just taken the 3 point time but ENSURE hitting the ocular... you would have finished with a 12. Better luck next time!". So yes, very happy with the graduate, but a little disappointed to find just how close (1 point) from a DG I was. Oh well, I should get it next time if I keep practicing and improving. Heck, going from 75 to 14 from November to February is pretty good in my opinion!

On another good note, my son on his first trip scored 28! Way to go, Seth! Time to sign up for more classes! Also, next time I'm just going to buy my ammo at the bunker. Almost comparable prices to online and it would be so much more convenient!

This may be a long shot but what about Walmart for some mechanix wear gloves? I noticed in RECOIL magazine that mechanix is making camo shooting gloves for special ops type people and it almost looks just like their standard gloves but a different color? Might be worth a try, CXR.

I run these, but they aren't too warm. They basically just cut the wind. http://strongsuitgloves.com/gloves/t...ac-desert-tan/
They are only about 20 bucks but they feel great. Thin so you don't lose the tactile feeling with your hands but they keep them a little warmer and clean. They may offer something with more padding for better weather protection.

I think ammunition matters, but it doesn't matter greatly.

Yet at the same time I consistently shoot about 8k-10k rounds a year of PMC Bronze 124gr 9mm.

So, on the one hand I want a round that I know will function 100%. I don't want to be distracted by a malfunction. I'm always amazed how many malfunctions happen during the tests.

But on the other hand, its not really about accuracy...we're shooting handguns at 50 yards max...

Also...you can get dinged with procedurals for too many malfunctions on a Master's test. It seems most of the Range Masters consider 3 malfunctions the max before they will start dinging you or even kick you off the range.

Looks like I'll just stick to quality ammo that works good in my guns and just practice with more of it.
