Savage Rascal on Sale at Big 5
Big 5 has the Savage Rascal on Sale for $155 this week
It's a single-shot lightweight .22 with an Accutrigger sized for a child age 6+ In other words - just about a perfect starter rifle. Cheers...

How do these compare to a Cricket? Are they better made? Heavier? What kind of sights?

They are better - I bought a Crickett several years ago for my older son. The trigger on the crickett is rather stiff and course compared to the Rascal. Otherwise they are very comparable - if anything I'd say that the Savage is slightly better in overall quality.
My younger son is using the rifle that I originally got for his big brother but I'm seriously considering picking up a Rascal and having him use that one instead of the Crickett. Here is an article that I wrote earlier this year. It has a comparison of several children-sized rifles.

This is a good buy, too bad they don't have the wood stock (also avail for lefties).
Working bolt, rather than a pull knob, good adjustable trigger (start heavy for the kids and then lighter during their learning/training curve), excellent peep sights. Good working sprung single shot "ramp" = easy loading. Two position safety that you can engage and safely eject live cartridge w/o pulling trigger. And accurate. Have to buy separate scope bases though, now available through Savage, but may have issues loading w/ the scope in the way; may be a way to use a small red dot on front base only? But prolly good to teach kids basics w/o scope anyway. Last edited by 3006mv; 11-05-2012 at 7:11 PM.. |

My oldest son shot well with iron sights from the get-go. His little brother had a hard time with it. However, once I put a red dot on the Crickett, he really began to enjoy that little rifle.
I had to machine a rail for it since Crickett does not offer a weaver-style base and the TRS-25 that I had available is weaver-mount only.

OK - just got back from Big5... this is one neat little rifle.
The bolt locks into position very positively and in a very solid fashion - I'm really impressed. Add to that the feedramp that leads up to the chamber - it is a bright red polymer insert, clearly visible and accessible. No doubt that loading this rifle will be a lot easier than loading the Crickett, especially for an adult helping a youngster. The rifle is overall just about as light as the Crickett. Since my younger son is working well with the crickett right now and since he is also already eyeballing our Henry .22 I'm still contemplating whether or not to use the sale at Big5.

Had my boy try one out at the store today while we were waiting for his sister to finish shopping nearby. It fit him well. Lucky for me he had plans with the rest of the family this evening so I could slip out and make sure Santa has one under the tree. Thanks for the heads up.

I can't say enough about the Rascal.
Bought one for my daughter (the pink one) for her 7th B-Day. Well made. Easy to use. Peep sights. Sling swivels. Actual bolt action rifle with a great trigger! It is also drilled and tapped for scope mounts for future use! Loaned her rifle to another 7 year old and she was asking Mom and Dad for one. Accuracy wise I had no trouble hitting 5 consecutive 1" stickers at 25m. -Pete ps. I'm totally picking one up for myself. I think others were laughing...until I shot it.
