New to AK. Help guid my path
Hello. I am an avid gun hobbiest. I have built several AR's but I would also like to have an AK in my safe as well. I defiantly want to get this project going before the new year
I'm not to familure with the AK 47 platform. I am extremely mechanical and would like to make this a build project. I am looking for a nice reliable unit. Does not have to be fancy. I'm ok with the stamped receivers and probably will go that route because of weight. Are the receivers serialized like an AR reciever would be? Is this what needs to go to the FFL? If you can point me in the direction of a good source of parts and brands to go with that would be great. Thanks,, |

Most the polish/Bulgarian are imported as parts kits and rebuilt here. Plenty are built with US barrels and receivers. This can be good or bad, depending on what the builder put into it. Call me crazy, but I'd rather have a combloc receiver and barrel and it be a little less refined then god knows what kind of lowest cost US barrel you will most likely get.

I have built using virgin chrome lined
Romanian barrels inter past with awesome results. Heard good things about the barrels built in-house at Ak-builder. Some say the rifling may be more accurate than the Romanian chrome-lined barrels. Might be worth checking out. Nitrate coat the non-chrome lined for best of both worlds But for me, Romanian chrome lined |

He is talking about a few used Polish barrels/front sections that bluejack was selling a week or so ago.

Ok so after doing some research on the nodak spud and the AK builder flats this looks really fun!!! I think for my first build I will go with a compleat receiver and buy a few flats to throw in the safe for a later date.
So with that being said what is the way to go on the nodak receivers? I would like to go with a fixed stock. Also any suggestions on 1mm over 1.5mm receivers? Also do I need the pistol grip reinforcement plate? I see one of their receivers comes with the plate installed. Any suggestions on a place to find a standard grade barrel? Also what style, country, or brand to go with? Thanks for all the info. This is going to really be a fun build. |

1mm stamped AKM fixed stock is what you want. You can get a nodak nds-1ez and save yourself from drilling the trunnion holes. Or get a nodak nds1 and drill the holed. Just 1 more step. No need on the reinforcement plate as that is for folding stocks.
Get a chrome lined barrel for your 1st build. Apex had Romanian barrels for $180 |

*edit* think I found what you mean. It's not Polytechs' actual website. It's a NOS vendor. I'd be honestly surprised if that was actually in stock, but at 350, well....I wouldn't pay that. http://stores.polytechparts.com/-str...ete/Detail.bok

Yep, what I thought. Not polytechs website exactly, but a vendor selling old stock.
Either way, I guess if you want to build as close to a MAK as you can, it's a good way to go. Way to expensive for a barrel that isnt drilled and a couple other rather inexpensive parts.

Chinese barrels have a smaller barrel journal than all the Euro Barrels. They are not compatible

OP, go to the NDS website and see which receiver model you need for your build. AoA, whatacountry, classic firearms, apex, Atlantic, they all have kits.
you must also have 6 US made parts in your AK for 922r compliance and a mag lock if you don't want to go featureless. have fun |

You know of course that building an AK is NOTHING like building an AR. There are a ton of things that can be done incorrectly.
If this is your first AK build, see if you can find a receiver that is drilled, bent, heat treated and welded. Installing the rivets and trunions is far easier if you start with a receiver that is drilled, bent, has the ranps welded, and is properly heat treated. If you are determined to do it yourself, go to a build party. This especially if you want a reliable AK before 2014.

So one of the above posts said I will need to have 6 us made parts to be 922 compliant. If I am buying a nodak reciever that is one part correct? Then what else would make up the parts list? I was looking at buying a demilled parts kit from a few of the links posted earlier. But it say all I would need is a reciever and barrel.
Thanks... |

Check the wiki on 922r compliance.
When they say all you need is a barrel and receiver, in the strictest sense its true, but usually does not take into account avoiding the 922r boogie man |

If you are going to build your first one vs buy completed rifle, I would first find a local builder with the press and other tools.
It's no as easy as assembling legos, as is the case with AR15s. There were so Ohio Ordinance Works pre bent serialized receivers on sale through their site not too long ago. I've used the O.O.W. receivers for 2 builds so far and I've had great results. Not that they are any different from other pre-bent receivers. Whatever you do go with, check the CA firearm handbook for the list of AK-style rifles banned by name. Then ensure you dont get a receiver with that manufacturer/model name. I've gotten parts from ak-builder.com, gunbroker, atlantic arms, arms of america, copes distributing and the list goes on and on. You can save yourself some time and effort buying a kit with the barrel installed/uncut. Those are not as readily available and more expensive because you dont have the headspace them or restake some of those parts.

Solar Tactical in Livermore does build parties or did. The problem that I had with them was that a self built AK would end up costing more than a commercially bought AK. Last time I checked with them which was in January, If memory serves me the complete cost was about $1200.00. They raised the kit prices, in November is was around $800.00 which I thought was a lot for a stamped receiver AK that you built yourself.
Earlier this Year Steven Matthews in Shotgun News built an AK for his article. He bought a Tapco flat to use as a template. He wanted a thicker receiver than you can get with commercially available flats. I think he went with 3mm sheet which is about twice as thick as is commercially available. He laid the Tapco sheet out on top and let it be his template. He covers some issues with using a thicker sheet of steel that come up when bending. He made his jigs. I was going to build one but with those prices I felt I could get better for less by buying one. The only thing is now I have a rifle with a serial number that is registered, but I also have a warranty and a milled receiver.
