Browning Auto 5 Rusty Whippet Gun
This sexy beast is a browning Auto 5, while she is rusted solid, she is a John Moses Browning design.... so I have every confidence she can be restored to operative condition. Once she is working, It is my intention to cut her up into a replica of the Whippet gun carried by Bonnie Parker (of the infamous Bonnie and Clyde duo). Bonnie's whippet gun was a 20 gauge, but I usually shoot 12, so it works for my purposes. Should be fun. |

This one I think was spotted by either someone on calguns or thehighroad.... (I forget which) It was one I probably would have missed myself, the auction listing was misspelled and it had none of my usual search terms... so I guess its more of a "it takes a village" kind of thing... |

Thats looks like a light 12 too. that one and the magnum are highly sought after weapons. I have a MAgnum 12 hanging on my wall that I use for bird hunting. they are a very unique design and very well built. It's no wonder they were in 100 years of nearly continuous production. And they just recently changed the design slightly and made the look a little more modern and brought it back.

Design wise is very similar, Still recoil operated. You have to look at it from my perspective. Glock, Berretta, H&K, SIG, Springfield XD, S&W, and any other handgun using a tilt barrel delayed blow back is a copy of a Browning 1911 operating system no matter what it looks like. Same goes here. The parts may not interchange but it's still a recoil operated gun with modern materials, manufacturing, and lines. |

No that not the issue. The problem I have is that it got that way in the first place. Crying shame. At this point anything you do including melting it down for scrap would only increase it's value.

If anything, at a glance it seems closer to the current benelli offerings. I guess you could call that a derivative of the original maybe, but it's still way off. Last edited by Merc1138; 02-03-2013 at 12:49 PM.. |

I get what you're saying but the design in my mind hasn't changed that much. Speaking from a purely engineering stand point. The gun is still recoil operated. they just changed how the recoil energy is captured and redirected.

What did you pay for that one? I still have my remington 11 i paid $75 for.. It became a nice defense gun after some work. Not nearly as rough as yours though
The auto 5/ rem 11 is a long recoil design (barrel moves back under recoil). It's nothing like a benelli/beretta short recoil system. It's also adjustable for light or heavy loads (i leave mine set for heavy). I suspect the new design is similar to the benellis, it would be far cheaper to produce. |

Poor A5. Damn shame but at least we all know it is in good hands now. Good luck with the project. Absolutely a wonderful shotgun. I got a couple A5s and Model 11s. Wood is expensive for these. You can pick up ramline synthetic stock and forgrip set for about 80 bucks which is a lot cheaper than wood. All the replacement springs with the friction ring will run you about 60ish. Midwestgunworks is a good place to start for parts.

I believe as far as getting the stock off, if memory serves me right, there is just the big screw on the bottom tang towards the buttplate. With that removed, that should free the stock. The tang is two pieces. The trigger guard is the lower and the receiver is the upper. The screw goes through the stock and threads into the upper tang/receiver. The second screw holds the hammer leaf spring and doesn't support the stock at all.

What were you thinking?!? Its is because Winchester refused John Browning's terms for the A5 design... Browning went to Remington(twice) to go on and produce the Model 11.

I have the 58 piece set of these that I use at work. Never had a problem. They make smaller sets and thin blades. I've even reground a couple for VERY thin screw slots, and they still worked great.

Ah yes, the A5 is a great piece of shotgun. I still sometimes take my light 12 to the trap range and shoot just as good or better than some of the guys that just went out and bought a nice top of the line OU or fancy Benelli auto. Good fun.
JMB had it right with the A5. I picked up an inoperable 16 ga recently (not Sweet 16) that I want to bastardize someday, but its hard to modify such a masterpiece. Great project and I will be keeping tabs on this one! |

Had a nutty idea.... What if we used a 1928 Tommy gun foregrip and some copper pipe/brass block to replace the conventional forend..... Thoughts? Anyone have a 1.5"X3"X5" block of brass they don't know what to do with? (bigger works too, longer would be awesome) Last edited by AJAX22; 03-08-2013 at 6:18 PM.. |

One of the best purchases I've ever made was a gunsmith screwdriver set from Midway. Two handles and dozens of various size bits.
I have a couple older Brownings and these absolutely are essential!
