Does anyone have a good min to max range using Varget with 178gr a-max, FGMM cases and CCI large rifle primers? I have the Hornady reloading manual and their numbers are way too conservative. Also, what COL do you guys use? My rifle is a Remington 700p in .308 with a 26" barrel and 1:12 twist.

I know what the factory fps out of a 20" barrel, but I have a leupold cds scope on it and would like to know the fps so I can send it to leupold and get it "dialed in" pun. I heard every inch is losing 25 fps, any help? (besides getting a chrony...)

I have never reloaded ammo before, but now I want to learn how to reload my new
308r ammo. I'm not looking for match grade, just week end target shooting. What Brass,
projectile and power do you recommend.

I was out test driving some 165gr Core-Lokt's over 4064 today out of an 22" H&R single. First time using this powder.
Not minute of angle, but minute of deer.
I get better results with Varget. -g

Ok, folks.

I am a complete noob on rolling my own. Up to now, the cartridges came out of box. BUT I now have a .308 of my very own. :-)

Read part of the first page to Pistol Pete asking for make, model, barrel length, & twist. I know this is trial and error in building a round for your particular rifle, but I'm just trying to sight it in. So, for a Ruger Gunsite Scout, 16.5" barrel, 1:10" RH twist, is there a starting recipe that is basic for this barrel length? I have some Atomic .308 Win Match (Nosler Custom Competition 168 grain hollow point boat tail, 2600 fps, over Varget powder, loaded in once fired military brass) from the CMP but it sounds like it was loaded for use in .308 Garand and other semi auto service rifles. Honestly not sure it is ideal for my Ruger GSR.

So, would appreciate your thoughts on the starting block, to learn and tweek later on. Thanks much.

Rem700 (cheap pig gun- built from spare parts and take offs)
1:12 18" Varmint Profile JEC brake
Stock trigger

Powder: 41grn Alliant AR15
Bullet: Sierra 168 SMK HPBT
Brass: Fed GMM
primer: Win
COAL: 2.815
Velocity Average: 2511 (15') from muzzle
Sub 1/3" MOA (one load work up)

All groups were 3 shots, as I was still working through various charges.

40, 40.5 also shot under 1/2MOA but didn't shoot enough to say these will always shoot this well.

Anybody have any recepies or experience loading heavier projectiles over Varget powder? I've got some 200gr Barnes TTSX, but none of my manuals list a bullet this heavy with Varget. A couple have RL-15 combos (which many folks equate with Varget) but nothing directly. Any suggestions?? I was thinking to start with 39-40gr and see how it goes. I've had good results already with 168gr TTSX over 42gr of Varget.

Quick question:
While not new to the reload bench, I am new in the .308 arena.
After picking the brains of so called comp. shooters and hunters that reload, I get the entire ball field of what I should do and what I shouldn't.
One thing did stick out from half of the people I talked to and the other half had never heard of it.
So here it goes:
Springfield M1A
18" scout barrel (no idea on twist rate, 2nd owner)
factory compensator
Now for the questions.
I've been told that if I use the wrong powder I can bend the op-rod.
If I start at the low end of the loading table (so I don't bend the op-rod) I run the risk sticking a bullet halfway down the barrel.
Can someone shoot me a recipe that will not bend the op-rod in my rifle and not stick a bullet.
This day and age powder is very scarce, so multiple powders would be great.
Thanks

My advice, and I am in the same boat with you, M1A 22" standard, is get a book like Hornday's 9th edition. It covers service rifles like the M1A and AR-15's specific rifling, twist rate and barrel length.

I started with a 155gr round, 2-300 yard round, and my loads with H4895 started in the 39gr range all the way up to the 43gr range.

Baby steps to monitor everything along the way to see what the best combo is.

Good luck, also might want to check out m14foruxxx.com good info there as well.

Yes you're right about bending the rod.... been shooting 45-46.5gr of blc2 and a 150gr bullet in nato and FC brass out of a socom 16.... Haven't had any issues...

Looking for a load for a 20" SPS tactical in 308 with the following components

bullet: 175 SMK
Brass: LC Match
Powder: IMR 4064

I used 168 Noslers and had good luck with 41.3 gr IMR and LC brass. It averaged 2430 FPS...Also 42.3gr IMR in LC Brass pushed right around 2493 FPS. I still need work cutting down the groups. They were around 1MOA. FGMM used as a control got me to .3MOA plus a 4th shot flyer that put me at 1.2MOA.... (ouch)

Thanks in advance!

Try 41.8 - 42.2 IMR 4064 with FGMM primer. 42.2 gr is the old accuracy load with FGMM brass and I don't believe there is too much difference between LC Match and FGMM.

Friday I got lucky and found some Federal 210M primers so yesterday I loaded up 41.3, 41.7 (based on MK 316 MK 0 recipe). 42.2 and 42.3 yesterday Using 175 SMK, IMR 460, LC 90 Match brass and Federal 210M with an Ogive of 2.220 and 2.80 COAL.

Thanks for the input. I'll post results as soon as I am able to get out and shoot. Weather looks "good" Tuesday.

I really need to get some boxes.

41.3 was okay. 41.7 shot a little over 1MOA 42.3 was the best at .68MOA

Factory remingtons almost universally will shoot the best between 43.5 and 44gr with that bullet at that seating length.
Thicker brass will drop the node by 1/2gr.
That means that Lapua or Lake City brass will be lower charges than most other commercial brass.

Been using the 155 scenars for a while now and see no need to use anything else. 44.8gr Varget, WLR, RA60 brass. Gives me about 2830 avg. out of my 24in 10fp. I'll let you know what it does out of an SPS Varmint I have coming. I decided my R+D build is going to be a .260
