Default Cleanup Pics (Davis, CA June 27th, 2010)

My sad, sad and lonely one-man cleanup attempt.....

I loathe, LOATHE private/paid shooting ranges so I have no problem doing what I can to keep these kinds of places open (i.e.; doing a cleanup/making a dent in a place like this by myself.)

At first I was thinking of just dropping by to do some recon and get some pics to give people an idea as to what kind of mess we're looking at but then when I got there I said screw it might as well do something.

I got there fully expecting to be the only one there and as I mentioned, that turned out to be the case.

Anyways, if I don't upload pics the day I take them I never get around to it.... So....

As always, the ever prolific shotgun hulls. And... Some "targets".....

This is just to show what I didn't get... And of course don't forget about the "targets" that are still out there.

I didn't come prepared to haul a bunch of huge pieces of debris since I don't have a truck. So I only focused on the spent casings/shotgun hulls..... And even that took up all the trunk space I had.

Thanks for the encouragement, you two.

We'll just have to schedule another date to make an attempt at it..... I figured for now, I would at least get things started.

Thanks again.

This kind of mess left behind hurts all of us shooters. I've never understood what the heck people are thinking. Are they in fear of going to jail it empty casings are found in the trunk or pick-up bed?

Great Job!

Thank you for the stewardship!

Speaking as one of the Panoche range cleanup trip organizers, you did a fantastic job here and absolutely deserve every bit of recognition these guys are piling on you. To do this all by yourself, in the hot Davis weather, is just phenomenal. Great job, and thanks for doing all of this.

Next time, get people to sign up and commit, get their cell phone #'s, and call them the day of the event so that no one flakes.. that way you won't have to do all the back breaking work yourself.

Nonetheless - you're a top notch guy.

Awesome pics, you definitely went above and beyond, considering today's heat. Much respect to you. If I hadn't been tied up today with family stuff, I'd have been out there with you.

If someone wants to organize a clean up a few weeks into the future, I'd be down to go. If any calgunners have a truck we can use, that'd be awesome, as some of the stuff out there that needs to be hauled away is pretty sizable. Something to cut down the dried brush on the levee would be awesome too, but that's probably asking too much.

Agreed. This sort of trash left behind is a plague on the shooting sports, and happens everywhere. Can't believe you did this cleanup single-handedly, but wow, the photos sure don't lie.

I'm a little over an hour away but I have a truck available (An Older Ford Ranger)... Try to set a date and let me know as far ahead as possible so I can let you know. And I will not flake out, Not my style.

Also is there a dump or anything like that in the area we can drop the `targets` at?

OP,

Thanks for your work. The after pictures are significantly better than the before pics.

I have a pickup, although much smaller than Purple K's. I would very much like to come help clean up and haul out some garbage. I had been trying to keep up with the cleanup thread, but no specific location was given. I am in Vacaville, so this place is probably less than 30 minutes from my door. I'll be glad to come to the next event as long as I'm not shooting a match that day.

Thanks for all the positive comments everybody it is very much appreciated. Makes the effort worth it, honestly.

As far as scheduling another attempt at a cleanup..... Does everyone think sometime later in the year would be better so we all don't double over from heat exhaustion?

And yes, there is in fact a landfill that is very near the shooting site:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?clien...3c5576bdb&z=19

And location.... What's the general feeling on publicly posting directions to an area like this? On the day of a cleanup, should we just arrange a "caravan staging point" and then drive the rest of the way in convoy-style?

Also what day of the week works best for most people's schedules? Saturday's or Sunday's?

+1 for Actual volunteers showing up On Day of cleanup --> Caravan staging point.

PS. Kinda funny, my truck has a bumper sticker that says "Yes, Its my truck. No, I won't help you move"...mostly to deter family members from asking.
BUT for this, I will allow use of my truck

Yeah I was kind of thinking along the lines of "price of admission." (Hence the need for a pre-meet up point.)

Another vote here for the "Meet and then Caravan" option. There are a few landmarks close by that would make for good staging points. Also, I'd vote for a cooler time of year also, but if there are going to be any relatively cool weekends coming up (sub 95 degree high temps) that might work too.

Ditto for the next clean up. I'd be happy to help. Just let me know where to meet to caravan and I'll be there.

Excellent job, OP, you did A LOT. Thanks for the hard work, it was hotter than hell in Sac, musta been around 100 there too

Okay yeah sounds like we'll make a try for the caravan option.

That way we can avoid putting up the directions publicly.... It's kind of like; you would like to know where the location is? Then.... Swing by to come help us and you'll find out on the very day we go for a cleanup. Like I said earlier in the thread; I look at is as a sort of cost-of-admission.

So... Suggestions on a date anyone?

Same place as this thread right? You did a great job!!!
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=313836

I'm totally down for a spot like this as supposed to the Yolo sportsman's. My only concern is with who owns this spot of land and who say's it is OK for everyone to shoot there. If the sheriffs ever did happen to stop bye, How can we prove it is legal for us to shoot there?

Kudos to you man! +1000!!!

I've never understood how people can trash a place or be so careless and shoot up metal signs or gates. You did a big service to the county and people.

We need a Calguns Cleanup sign that says a member volunteered and cleaned up other peoples mess. Kind of like the adopt-a-highway signs.

Great job. I would love to do this at a ocal range but they have already banned shooting here in LA county unless at a range or engaged in hunting so there is no point.

Excellent work

I'm available with truck any time for the next three weeks. My wife just left town for the inlaws so I'll be out looking for projects.
