Season's listed for Band-tailed Pigeons and doves but nothing listed for Rock doves.
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/10-11-upland-sum.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Pigeon Would a pellet rifle be a legal method for taking a migratory bird? Would they be listed as migratory or a nuisance animal? Last edited by Trapper; 11-02-2010 at 7:56 PM.. |

Non-game birds
They are known as feral pigeons. Under CA depredation you don't even need a license to hunt them. What you do need is written permission from the land owner or one of his agents.
There is no season or bag limit. I shoot them all the time. |

I call them barn pigeons because that's where they hang out in barns and crap on everything. |

Pretty sure Band tailed pigeon are the gamebird and doubt you could use a pellet gun but not sure. Those pigeons the OP shot are like a flying rat and I believe they have no limit or restrictions on take.

Thats interesting. I had 2 friends that were shooting pigeons and were detained by SO deputys who wanted to have them cited for shooting out of season . They had looked up the bandtail hunting season and and confused the pigeons for bandtails. When DFG warden arrived he told the deputys my friends were doing nothing wrong and released them without a cite.

This response was in the same thread you took the other information from. It was also from Karen Fothergill at F & G a year earlier.
"You cannot find any regulations for the sport take of rock doves because they are an open season legal species to hunt in California. Rock doves may be taken anytime of year and there is no daily bag limit. Please feel free to contact me if you have additional questions. Karen Karen R. Fothergill, Coordinator Game Bird Heritage Program Staff Environmental Scientist California Department of Fish and Game 1812 Ninth Street Sacramento, CA 95814 Phone (916) 445-3703 Fax (916) 445-4048 Cell (916) 716-1461 I called Fish and Game a few years ago and was told by a F&G Captain that feral Pigeons can be taken all year with no limits. He referenced "Antwerp Pigeons" were protected from taking. I have an older full size F & G regulations book that the Wardens use for reference. I did find a reference section regarding the prohibited taking of"Antwerp Pigeons" (Homing & racing Pigeons). I'll have to dig out the book and find it. I have been shooting feral Pigeons for many years. I have not seen any change in the regulations since then. To make it clear,F & G should put feral Pigeons(Rock Doves) on the non game list with the English Sparrows and Starlings, since Rock Doves are not indigenous to the U.S. |
