Default Are Charging Handles the same on 5.56mm ARs as .300 Whisper/Black ARs?

Are Charging Handles the same on 5.56mm ARs as .300 Whisper/Black ARs?

I just ordered a S&W 300 Whisper/Blackout upper to go with my M&P15 lower.

I have a PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle I really like from a previous 5.56mm build.

Is it safe to run the PRI 5.56mm charging handle in my new 300 Whisper/Blackout upper?

I think it is a universal part but I want to be sure. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the info in advanced.

Everything should be the same except your mag, barrel and bolt.

.300blk use the same magazine and bolt as 5.56

The only difference is the barrel, muzzle device, and most likely the gas tube length.

Awesome. My first 300 BLK.

Not the sexiest upper in the world. But I wanted something made by Smith & Wesson so this build wouldn't be a franken-AR anymore. And finding an upper from S&W has become next to impossible, Unless you want the standard M4 profile. Even those are getting hard to find.

The charging half with work perfectly. The mags were supposed to be interchangeable, but some heavy subsonic loads will hang up in 5.56 mags due to the rib that guides the shoulder of the case. Some longer ogive bullets won't feed well if not using 300 BLK mags, but it's a case by case basis.

5.56 frame size charging handles are all the same regardless of cartridge.
Only non-standard uppers (side charging) use a non-standard charging handle.

A great reason for a gas buster on a 300 blackout upper is the use of a suppressor.

Do you have a brand name recommendation on ammo? Something reliable, easy to find at the big box stores, and known to work well with regular PMAGS and HEX MAGS?

The brands I usually go with for ammo are Armscor, Federal, Remington, Winchester, and Magtech.

I avoid Fiocchi (had a nightmarish experience), Wolf, and Russian made stuff.

Your upper has a carbine gas system which is problematic for most subsonic loads.
You will want to stick with lightweight supersonic loads.
Nothing over 150gr.
Ideally, you want 110-130gr type loads well north of 2000fps to be able to have sufficient gas to cycle the action reliably.

A lot of Blackout uppers come with pistol length gas, even 16 inchers.

ALL correctly made 300 blackout barrels come with a pistol length gas system.
Carbine is not really useful until you get to about 20" long on a 300 blackout barrel.
