Default Picked up an ACOG

So I picked up a T31F and unsure how I feel about it. I may sell it and remount my T1 and add a magnifier instead, Thoughts?

What were you gonna do with it? Shoot long-ish distances? IMHO, they are not that great. Cool, but I hardly use them, I stick with AImpoints and Eotechs.

The ACOG isn't really a CQB optic. It's meant for short to medium range (100 to 600 meter) fast target engagement.

For a true carbine like what you have, I definitely would have opted opted for a T1 or M4s.

But then again, if you want fast target engagement to and beyond 600, keep the ACOG and get an offset mount for the T1 and have both on at the same time.

BTW: How do you like an X300 series on a rifle? I was still debating on an M600 Ultra Scout Light, but never really thought about using an X300/400 on a rifle. I guess I could take one off my Glocks and put on the picatinny adapter to test it out myself.

Acogs are terrific. If your only shooting at a distance you can throw rocks at then use a red dot style.

I use rifles ro shoot 1-500yds. I love the 4x for that.

ACOG's are great!!! If you know how to use the Bindon Aiming Concept, you have a VERY versatile optic. I used one and was able to score some really high scores doing el presidente drills from 5 - 25 yards.

And it is SWEET for anything long distances. That's where it shines.

My advice? Keep it, use it, if it doesn't suit your fancy, shoot me a PM.

I'm in a very similar position. Every time I think I want to sell it, I shoot it at 100-500m and it's AWESOME. I've decided to keep it and build another carbine for a T1

I would either purchase an RMR to mount on top of the ACOG or use your existing T-1 on a Larue 45 degree mount. Then you have the best of both worlds.

I also say keep that bad boy. Like others have said if your more of a close range shooter get rid of it and go with the t1...but if you like me and love hearing the ring of some ar500 plate 500 meters away you picked the right optic. Nice pictures and rifle by the way.

How do you like the height-over-bore with the rmr atop the acog? I've never been overly fond of the look or an almost 6" over bore. What distance did you sight your rmr for? That may be an option I can consider of 45 degree mount of an rmr

I have Aimpoints, Eotechs, and ACOG's, and my TA31RCO with green horse shoe reminds me of my Eotechs recticle but magnified. I can still shoot the ACOG at short distance and get quality hits.

IMHO, shoot the TA31F first, and if you don't like it, sell it. I am sure you will get close to what you paid for it. ACOGS values hold up pretty good unless they looked like the dog ran it through the family yard

I'm running a TA33 with doctor on top. I used to have the TA31 but liked the TA33 better.
It's really tall and honestly I would get an offset mount and mount the doctor like that. When it was mounted on top I had to look over and I felt it slowed me down on quick target acquisition. If all I had to do was tilt and look it would be faster.

Something like this (took off the internet):

This topic seems to be surfacing a lot lately.

In the meantime, maybe someone can explain the philosophy and/or advantage of mounting a light forward of the front sight. I've been seeing this a lot lately as well, or maybe I haven't been paying attention.

I personally rather have on top then at a 45..

I run my DocTor up to 100-150 yrds
Switch to ACOG beyond that

I decided to run the X300 to save weight from my old scout light I had mounted. I also didnt want to run a wire and pressure switch anymore and figured up top is best for running the system left or right handed, no more shadow from the barrel from left or right (depending on mounted side) and it was always a pain trying to pack 2 ARs in a double rifle case with lights that added and extra 2 inches in width (this keeps them all slim)

Not sure what you paid for it but if it was anything close to retail, chances are you'll lose a bit if you sell it.

Personally I'd keep it. They're excellent optics and every gun collection should have at least one ACOG in there somewhere....

I actually picked it up really cheap. $800 brand new from a shop (I frequent), It was a price I couldn't pass on. I dont think I'll sell it but more than likely it'll sit there with a few other optics collecting dust.

Assuming you're playing 3G with those race guns. I'd go with a variable 1-6x scope. Vortex and SWFA make good ones.

I have the RMR mounted on top of my ACOG. The height over bore is about 4" so I just make sure to aim a few inches high at close ranges. For CQB, that means aiming at the collar bone when going for COM hits. It might be an issue though if you're aiming for headshots.

Edited to add: I zeroed the RMR for 50 yards so that the POI is within 4" of POA all the way out to 250 yards.

Tired of people complaining about the ACOG not being the be all end all optic. It is great glass period for where and when it was designed to perform. If all you want to do is play at close in CQB then stick with your red dot flavor of the month. If on the other hand you want to be a rifleman ........

Not my set up. Just some pics I got off the internet to show the offset mount.

I'm currently using the ta33 with the rmr mounted on top and not a fan. I had the same set up on my ta31 as well.
Wasn't a fan of lifting my head up to use the rmr and losing my cheek weld.

But with anything you'll just need to try it and see if it works for you.

True indeed. Designed and intended to dispatch men, period. One or two of the reticles lend themselves to precision shooting, though.

I really like the magnification on my ACOG. The glass is really clear and frankly it looks sweet. I also have a couple Eotech's that I like on a couple rifles that I don't shot past 100yds with like by Vector.

Keep it! Practice the Bindon Aiming Concept for close in work and you will have an excellent all purpose optic that has a better weight distribution and lower "rail estate" than other optics like RDS+magnifier or variable zooms. I'm a bit biased as this is the same optic I was issued and trained with in the corps, but the pros far outweigh the cons.

Pros:
- Lower weight and better weight distribution than variable zooms and RDS + magnifier setups.
- Bullet Drop Compensator built into reticle
- Great clarity and field of view
- Decent range estimation if you know how to reference the reticles
- "Bomb proof" construction (ask me how I know)
- No batteries required and auto adjust to light conditions
- Sexy looking (if that matters to you lol)

Cons:
- ****ty eye relief if you don't shoot nose to charging handle

I personally love this setup for all purpose rifles (if such a concept exists). I got one on my recce 👍

^ Just another note to add:

I'm one of those guys that believes weight distribution is more important than overall weight of a rifle. That said, I like my rifles to be heavy in the rear. It definitely allows the weapon to point faster and more naturally and also helps with prolonged shouldering in the standing position (leverage doing the work for you). That being said, optics that distribute the weight more towards the rear of the mag well work for me. As does that UBR stock you see on there. Just some food for thought.

Off topic, but is the triple tap worth the money compared to say a Battle comp, MB556 or Lantac Dragon?
