Default New Hog Hunter

Iíve been a wing shooter before, but recently a family friend came into a ranch with some hogs in it.

I am out of the loop on ammo laws and on good ammunition to use. I donít plan on buying a rifle for this hunting.

These are the rifle calibers that I have 5.56/223 and 7.62x39. What are some good rounds that I can use and still comply with the lead law? Thank you

Is the ranch in the Condor Zone?

We are in Phase 2

You can obtain lead free in both of those calibers but neither is considered an ideal hog round. Personally Iíd favor the 7.62x39 as itís ballistics are a lot like a 30-30 and I shot a lot of pigs with my old model 94 30-30, but usually up within 75 yards or so.

Yes, it is in the condor zone.

From what I heard, all shots are within 75 yards.

If those are your choices, here are a couple of links to lead free ammo for each caliber.

Copper 7.62x39 is $40 or $50 per box.

Not sure I would use .223.

Copper 7.62x39 is stupid expensive but how many rounds are you really going to shoot hunting a year? Winchester is supposed to restart 7.62x39 hog hunter ammo in 2018 and I plan to stock it deep at 20$ a box.

I'll second what others are saying: 7.62x39 is the better of the two but I'm not familar w/ non-lead ammo.

I know to some this seems basic, but I a, a total newb.

If you decide to use .223 non-lead ammo can be bought at Walmart, dicks, sportsmans wharehouse etc...

7.62x39 is what I use, but I reload with Barnes bullets in .310 diameter. Can't help with factory non-lead, be careful not to use frangeable ammo.

7.62 x 39 for sure.

There's a link a few posts up.

Non-magnetic means nothing in regards to non-lead (DFW approved).

Go to ammoseek dot com and search for hornady gmx ammo in your caliber.

Do it soon because no mail order ammo after first of the year here in the golden state...

223 is not ideal (kinda light) but should be fine with a well placed shot within the range you mention.

I have no experience with 7.62x39 so offer no opinion on that.

7.62 - ear or neck shots.

Copper - reload-em. Barnes bullets are $30 for 50.

Easy. sell the AK, SKS and buy a real hunting rifle!
Seriously a 7.62 should work ok. Be sure to sight in with compliant non-lead bullets. Stock AK / SKS sights kinda suck. In my limited experience the shots will be close and fast, hogs do not stand still, once they know somethings up they are running. Be sure to practice off hand, snap shots, a little skeet ain't bad practice either....
What do I use? .458 Socom with copper 300 gr Barnes TAC-TX boolets, hog hammer, I am too old to chase em down.

BTW, (insert braggadocious tone), Tonight I am having a bit o cage free, BBQed, organic bratwurst sausage with potatoes and veges... awesomness. Side note: My very lib, cute 23 yr old niece heard we we having 'game night" at a friends house and promptly informed that will Kick my A... casue she's a whiz a board games. The sauteed duck breast and Elk steak was kind of a surprise to her!

I think you need a new rifle..
Since you have 223, x39. logic would tell me 308 is right up your alley.
Plenty of lead free ammo and it will put a hurtin on just about anything

Well you’ll pay through the nose for 7.62x39 compliant ammo, but it’ll work. It has the same knockdown power as a 30-30. The real question is how accurate will you rifle be with compliant ammo. If you using a battle rifle AK/sks on average they have a 2 1/2 to 3 MOA impact at 100. Now I’ve seen a few that are tackdrivers, but they’re rare. Remember, hunting is all about guaranteeing your shot. This may mean waiting for the optimal position or getting closer, the last thing you want is wounding an animal.

Everyone assumes the X39 is an AK or SKS......

Could be mini-30 or like in my case an AR, that is very accurate.

.30-30 with the new leverevolution ammo smokes any AK round for hunting.

How many pigs have you killed with the 30.30?

By the way. The OP wants to know 556 vs 7.62. The 7mm rem mag is far superior than the 30.30 and roses smell better than farts. Both are off subject.

A .223 will work just fine on hogs inside 100 yards...especially with an all-copper boolit.

This is such an old argument I won't even put up a popcorn smiley.

If you can't do the job with, say, a 60-70ish grain copper .223, then an extra .080" diameter in the same bullet construction is not going to save you.

Well when the majority of the paper punching guys asking the same question when new to hunting, you tend to follow the laws of averages.

Your point being??? The low pressure 30-30 and the high pressure 7.62x39 still have about the same knockdown power. Both are very capable >200 yard cartridges for hunting.

Well that solves the nasty .223 or 7.62x39 arguing we been doing.....

Good choice on using .30 caliber OP....

But, but, but you stopped all our ridiculous, debate and you ruined all of our fun! ... Hold on now that 308 is not enough gun, not near what an 30.06 is nor a 7mm mag, and well my .458... the ballistic coefficient is all off, FPS at 600 yds falls off drastically, think of the Calguns legacy, think of the children for gawd sakes..

Seriously good luck, should be perfect.

Should have got a 7mm instead. You're not going to have nearly as many opportunities to argue with calgunners as you would have.

What a shame.

Make sure you post in the "bragging rights" when you lay some pork on the ground.

J/k. Good idea on the 308. Federal makes some cheap-ish copper ammo, sold in walmart. I would start with it.

you're welcome.
the cheaper federal copper ammo at walmart is ok at up close, 200 yards and less. couldn't get the same consistent groups of TTSX out my 270.
