Not my folks. Once they saw how much my SGLI was worth, they got $$ in their eyes ROFL. They told the my recruiter, "Hey wait, we got another one you can have him too!"

i was barely 24 when i went to basic. basic was fun. we didn't have basic with females so it was pretty bad in that respect (gay). I would do some crazy **** in basic, like run around in made up road guard vests and **** through other platoons at night (naked). we would take showers really late at night and put ben gay on small towels and steam the showers.
i also weighed in at 238 pounds when i joined. but i was 15% body fat. by the time basic was over and airborne school i was 215 or so. whatever you do dont get in trouble, dont leave your locker keys where DI's can get to it. they'll make it hell. dont stand out and just roll with the punches. we were all the sf and ranger platoon contracts so we got worked out hard. the Sgt Mjr yelled at our DI's because we got a lot of extra PT in the afternoon when it was hot. |

I was also a bug fatty when I joined. I was about 220 and I was, still am 5'8". I left basic at about 175. Like everyone has said stay low key and don't draw attention to yourself. Also hope you don't have idiots in your flight ot platoon. We had a couple so never left red cycle, even after basic into AIT, or whatever the Airforce calls it. IN the words of Drill Sergeant Davis, " I can't help you guys get any smarter, but I sure help you guys get stronger. Now start pushing!"

My experience in the Air Force was vastly different. IMHO, you should get a degree and go in as an officer. Don't waste your time being enlisted unless you can get a garanteed job in the medical field or in some field you would actually like to be in as a civillian. If you do go enlisted, take as many classes as you can while you are on active duty. Staying after 4 is a mistake unless you want to make it a career. You don't want to be in your 30's and living with your folks while going to school.

WE got none of that. We got a lot of, they scraped the bottom of the barrel with you guys, or this is exactly what I expected Echo. We had a lotof dirtbags, mostly the National Guard guys. They went to a couple of drills before going to basic, so they thought they were the S***.

Nobody likes national guard. Not even national guard!
edit: edit especially drill sergeants. If you didn't tell the lady "Regular Army" at register, you got sent to the back of the chow line!

I'm not going to go through all of the posts, so if somebody already mentioned this, just consider it two of us now.
If I had it to do all over again, I would have gone Coast Guard. I knew a guy in the Coast Guard, and the way he described them made me think they are the CHP of the High Seas. Those guys do law enforcement on a number of levels, as well as rescuing people at sea. They also do accident investigation involving large and small vessels along with drug interdiction, alien smuggling, immigration, and the list goes on. If your goal is to eventually go into LE, go Coast Guard. Just a heads up, I was Military Police, and 30+ years ago we did law enforcement when doing garrison duty, as well as doing other things associated with tactical duty when on an FTX. From what I understand, the Army has changed the M.P. mission, and Military Police are now more tactical than garrison, but that could also be due to the current involvement in the M.E. Do what you want, but I'd go Coast Guard if I were you.

Never wore the damn things even when doing AWOL apprehension. The only time I wore anything that covered my neck, was when I was in Korea. That was a functional part of the uniform because it was a long sleeve turtle neck knit pullover and it kept me warm when it was -20 degrees outside.

The ascots would be just as bad as the berets. More than have the people in the Army can't wear it properly, you get a lot of pizza men running around. Then you got to stand in formation for over an hour on Fridays listening to nonsense and safety briefs with the sun shinning strait in your face with your head cooking under that wool. I get that special unit should wear them to signify them, but lie I said the average enlisted man and Majors for some reason can never wear them correctly. BY the way Korea was my favorite duty station.

hope the best to you. My 7.5 years as an aircraft mechanic has taught me alot about the AF and the Army. Im a flying crew chief on C-17's, we move alot of army, marines, navy, and AF equipment and people. Iv'e talked to alot of Army and haven't yet talked to someone currently in the Army that wouldn't leave before the end of there enlistment given the oppurtunity. One of the pilots with me on the mission I'm on right now was prior Army, He said he hated AF people when he first made the transition but now see's the light. As he should, having pride in embracing the suck is a good thing if you don't appreciate a better quality of life. If I could do it all over, It would be coast gaurd all the way. There were some coasties in my Airmen Leadership School. They were marine mechanics and we had a lot in common except they aren't really contributing to the OIF/OEF/New Dawn missions. Which is awesome, deploying to anywhere in the middle east away from family and friends and normal life is fine but not for a cause that doesn't justify it. Good luck, Bill

Lets criticize guys who actually board drug smugling ships for a living because we're so cool we know what gear works best better than they do. After all, it said so on the Magpul video.
Sorry, but this is a major pet peeve of mine. Guy's who shoot mostly for fun making fun of those who do it for a living is annoying as hell. Don't get me wrong. I respect the hell out of anybody who has anything to do with our drone program. Whether you fly'em, arm 'em, or fix 'em. That is seriously cool. But it is a different skillset than being part of a boarding party. Personally I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they know a heck of lot more about it than either of us. Working around water and onboard ships has its own unique requirements. All of which add bulk and drag to the gear. Some of the stuff you see Seals wearing looks very low speed high drag, but it meets their specific requirements for the mission. Notice the guy with the oxygen tank? Probably more for protection from smoke from fire and/or tear gas in confined spaces like the hold of a ship. Not really sure. If his job requires an oxygen tank to perform a raid...my hat is off to him...because that is heavy and dangerous all on its own (as anybody who dives can tell you). Plus blue is as appropriate a color for them as any other. No bushes and trees to blend in with on a ships, and they probably operate a lot at night. So blue blends well with the dark night sky and dark water...at least as well as anything else will. Last edited by tacticalcity; 08-31-2011 at 3:27 PM.. |

These guys are experienced operators, they're trained to clear ships of hostages or hostile targets as part of a boarding team. The margin for error is almost nill, whereas a 18-20 year old PFC is off blowing rounds at anything that resembles a insurgent/hostile target. They also serve a unique mission which is DHS/Military, their a rare breed of Federal LE, and Military. It enables the coast guard to participate in a unique and important role..

Haha, that pic is awesome.
FYI, the "blue" guns aren't for coolness. They're "sim" guns. As a former LEO we'd use Glock 17T's for training. Essentially the real thing, but modified so they shoot blue paint bullets from a low charge round. I hated them because they always got gunked up and jammed; much like paintball but with a real gun so field stripping and cleaning was not as easy.

I truly believe that ONLY a Navy Veteran can give the "Puddle Pirates" a ribbing. I have seen, first hand, the job they do and respect them immensely.
But...... I will never admit to it! I want to thank all of you who are out there protecting us, in any capacity, and pray that you are kept safe! THANKS! |

On an unrelated note, I think people get their panties all tied up in a bunch over **** talking on the internet way too easily. Military folks rip on each other all the time, it's part of the culture and if it bothers anybody, then they just need to grow thicker skin.

I thought about it, and decided Army Reserves. I'm not into fighting fires, filling sandbags and doing riot patrol.
Different job. Also, I never met anyone in my recruitment process not hoping to get into the reguar army or army reserves through their service in the NG (which made me wonder how bad they were that they couldn't get into the army in the first place, it was mostly young kids with poor grades or ASVAB scores). |

I read somewhere in the thread that they were discouraging you from shying away from the jobs with lengthy training. That is exactly what I did when I joined the army. I didn't want to spend a lot of time training--just wanted to get to my unit and see the world. I don't regret that decision because the military paid for college during active duty and when I left the service the G.I. Bill helped me to get/finish my bachelor's degree and in turn solidified my career. I've been in the IT Field for about 17 years now. When I enlisted they offered me aircraft mechanic (18 months), cook, infantry and ammo specialist. I opted for ammo specialist only 5 weeks of advance training--threw in Airborne training for good measure. Did a tour at Ft. Bragg and my remaining service was in Germany. I had a great time there. Ironically, I didn't see much ammo while I was there.

I wanna thank you guys for your advice and input. That really helped me a lot. I decided that Army would be a better branch for me, since it's easier to get in to and it has more jobs than AF. I wanna do combat as well, since like someone mentioned, LE looks for that in their candidates. I just don't wanna do infantry. First of all, who told you LE is looking for guys who are Infantry? LE wants folks who can beklong to ANY team building organization, be it Army,Navy,AF or Marines. I spent 16yrs in Calif Army Guard, have been Infantry,Armor,Military Police and finally 10yrs as a Crewchief on Huey's,Blackhawks and ****hooks. I am now in the USAFR out of Travis, Yes! AF has it Good...Probably the Best IMHO. I loved the Army, but it is a differnet world. Right now all services are very very picky, very few waivers of any sort, accept maybe medical..minor in nature. Cal Guard was not allowing any GED's in just 8 mos ago. To many folks out of work these days to worry about problem children. Make sure you "Shi*" is clean, be honest with recruiter, don't waste there time if you ain't sure...you either want in or you don't, this is time to Man up and start a career. Do it wisely, I see far to many freakin cry babies who can't even handle it here in the AF and want out...makes me puke. And if you aren't in shape? Get there, stop eating twinkies for breakfast lunch and dinner and start running 3-4 days a week, The Military now throws you out if you can't past PT Test. Think about a Job you can transfer to the Civ world...I did when I was 18, I went into Telecom Center Operator in the Army Reserves...I now make over 100k a year and have for many years...that is because of the Army. Get a Job like Refrigeration, Electrical, Air Traffic control....go check out what those folks make here in the real world.... Good luck |

YEP! Not only do you have a Federal Mission, you have a state mission, you do way more cool stuff in the Guard then you do in the USAR. Been there, done that....Riots are better then Iraq and Afghanistan IMHO....this is my house, I'd rather save calif then those 3rd world cess pools where they want us gone. |

If LE is in your future, shoot for Army Ranger. You are a shoe in for any LE job in the country
