I use Wondershare to convert to different formats, but I would think that any decent like dvdshrink or decryptor with anydvd running would work okay.

I use dvd shrink from the site www.filehippo.com. from there I'm pretty sure you can vary the media format if not download vuze from same site.

Handbrake. Been using it for longer than I can remember. It's free, small, free of ads or other junk, and has versions for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Also has very useful presets for "iPod", "TV", etc if you are not familiar with tweaking the settings yourself.

Is Handbrake easy? I am ok with computers but hate the super technical stuff. Is it dummy proof?

I think so. When you first open the program it looks overwhelming, there are tons of specific video settings you can tweak. The pre-sets really make it noob proof.

Open Handbrake, it will either see you have a DVD inserted, or click the source button and select the DVD. Over on the right (mac version), there is a list of common formats. iPads, TV, Playstation, Apple TV, and tons of other devices. Click the device you want, and click go. Once it's done it will drop the file on your desktop.

The presets really just adjust quality based on the resolution for a specific screen size.

You can also use it as a video file converter. Sometimes I'll have AVIs I want converted to MP4s, Handbrake also does that.

I know you're not advocating piracy on a forum for law abiding gun owners, right? You also assume OP is looking to convert a commercial available.

+1 for Handbrake.

Legal to make archive copies of what you legally own.

I've used AnyDVD and CloneDVD from SlySoft for years quick (about 1/2 hr per DVD) and easy.

Yup, good stuff there. My kids are rough on DVDs so I rip them first thing out o the box. Covert to avi and stream over our network to the Wii. Kids no longer even get a chance to touch the DVD's.

I rip a copy of every DVD we get, all it takes is one scratch and your toast, add a 5 year old to the mix and poof, all your DVD's are shot. I've been using handbrake as long as I've been ripping DVD's without issue. If I need file conversion I've been using visualhub (mac).

No piracy involved. I have seasons of shows that I want to be able to watch on the go.

Old thread but new tech keeps popping up.

To convert DVDs or any videos to your handheld device, I recommend DVDCatalyst/Video Catalyst. It has platforms for just about every handheld device I could ever imagine.

They have a trial and a purchase version on their site.

DVDFab works great and has selections for ipod & ipad & other mobile devices.
E.M. Total Video Converter also is a good choice. They are both easy to use.

+1 DVDFab...

For free alternatives, back when I didn't have smartphone and I wanted to convert a bunch of movies into my PSP, I used PSPVC.
http://pspvc.nswardh.com/

This allows you to download youtube videos directly (for the most part) and converts to a specific format of your choice.

+1000 for Handbrake.

Ive been using it for about 3+ years.

to the person who asked if its easy. For the most part yes its easy. There are some issues that I have had problems with.

1 if you have subtitles sometimes it gets difficult. I had some that worked flawlessly. some that just needed a selection changed and a few that no matter what I did I couldn't get it to work.

If you choose they preset formats its easier. Since I use Apple TV as my format and they support it I can use their preset Apple TV 3 format.

Its been very stable. I converted ALL the DVD's we had over our lives to iTunes using Handbrake and iFlicks.

For anyone who streams videos to their Apple TV from their Mac, check out the application "Beamer".

If you are sick of converting avis to mp4s, beamer will take any video container and stream it straight to your Apple TV. No more waiting an extra hour for handbrake to re-encode stuff
