Default Moving to California W/ Questions

Hi everyone, I am new on Calguns and I am about to be new to California for a nice career.

I have been researching some of the crazy gun laws and trying to get myself adjusted before I move.

My very first question, I have something that California considers an "assault riffle" where it is just a long gun everywhere else, and I am wondering would some of you would do if you are moving into this state?

1. Would you neuter it to make it California legal?
2. Would you trade it for a few off roster handguns?
3. Would you, let family hang on to it for that one day California gets rid of its crazy laws or for when you move out?

I am interested to hear on what you would say?

Thanks in advance.

I will likely end up in California. My plan is to take only bolt action rifles, various shotguns and my handguns. I won’t be dealing with CA registration BS except for whatever applies to Garands and M1A rifles.

If you like the gun and would like to continue to use is neutering is the answer. If it's just another gun to you sell it and get some Gen 4/5 Glocks or Ruger MKIVs for the win. If you like it and don't want to neuter it even though it's reversable leave it with mom & dad - CA laws will only get worse so plan on only being able to fondle it when you go home at Xmas.

I assume this evil rifle is black ? you can always make it featureless. then no registration.

It is a mix between patriot brown and dark earth from the factory. My FN SLP MK1 and my xdm mod 2 in .45 are black but those aren't the gun in question.

I love my SCAR 17 but it is very niche and doesn't have the custom mods support like an AR has in terms of making it featureless. There is the fin grips (I hate the idea of one), but I can use it as a temporary measure until I design, 3D print, prep, mold, and then resin cast a Throdsen FRS-15 style or a Stag Arms SA2TFD style buttstock for the FN SCAR. It could be a product I could sell later after some testing. (A lot of work but the engineer in me likes to tinker and make stuff)

However, I can trade it at a gun store for about 4 or 5 good off roster pistols. Since I will not be able to buy those while I am there. They could make an excellent collectors items in California since almost nobody has a Gen 5 Glock for example.

The gun would go to my brother, but I would remove the bolt and gas piston before hand.

Sorry guys but I did it.... I traded the rifle and bought the guns....

I better do it now or I will have no other chance to get these guns later other than the day of the move. Besides, I can buy the California compliant version of the riffle later but I cannot have these off roster guns after I officially move.

Here is what I got from least to most appealing to me right now.

Glock 19 Gen 5.

CZ P-07

S&W M&P M2.0 Tactical FDE in 9mm

And the best for last...

Sig P320 X-Five in 9mm

I have mag limiters on their way so I can get them installed and be within law.... I really hope this law changes soon so I can have that 21 rounds of 9mm goodness!

"Awesome" ... 50k in another state will go a lot farther than 65k here once you factor state/local taxes + cost of living ...
Many tech companies have campuses in TX or MI, id look there.

That being said, featureless your SCAR17, leave the 11+ mags back 'home,' and buy all the off-roster stuff now while you can, because you won't be able to get it here.

Welcome to CA - after about 2 years of BS, you'll be itching to go somewhere else.

All depends on where you're moving.

$65k in The Bay Area, is nothing. If you will be living rent free, it will go a long way though.

You will have a hard time surviving on 65 grand anyplace in this state except humbolt county or plumas county once the state and locals start taxing your pay and everything you own. Work for the company in another state and be far better off. been here 55 plus years and I am looking elsewhere now that I am retired. Good luck

I also served in the Marines and it broke my body in many ways that is not healthy for a guy in my age. Basically, I get a some money from the VA that can pay the rent in a cheap place in San Diego county. Also, my wife is talking about working too. If I think what my wife is going to get for working there and what I would make, I would guess we would be probably be hitting XXXk before taxes.

You can make it on that. If you ever fall on hard times, just go into Mexico, turn around, and jump over the wall. That will at least get you free food and healthcare

1) Don't move here, it literally sucks butt.
2) Don't sell your SCAR17.

100k is a good start. If you make less than $110 in San Francisco you can qualify for low income housing.

No buddy in there right mind move to cumminifornia.
I'm moving out soon. Already have a place in Idaho.
Oh and besides the gas tax our electric rates are going up another 14%.
No wonder we have the highest poverty rate in the nation.
I think the only place worse is Mexico.

If I don't like the job I will quit and move after maybe 3 to 5 years. Leaning towards 5 years so I can get my PE licence soon after. Or I can invent the next big thing and become a business man who sets up shop and lives outside of California. What ever comes first. However, if I like it and I didn't invent anything worthwhile to start a business, I will help to enact changes in the system and find workarounds around these laws. Which I have a few ideas already. Who knows, New California might become a new state and I would be living within that region.

That means youre basically back down into the $60k range after taxes.

And thats before you figure in nationwide highs for vehicle registrations / fuel costs / utilitiy bills / sales tax / etc.

Do I sound anti-CA...?

I should because this Grunt is moving to Texas next month and bringing 180+ jobs to the Houston area.

Renegotiate your deal or wait for an opportunity in a free state....
