Default 'Best' Range To Join In Bay Area

Calgunners,

For those of you that are members of the respective ranges in the Bay Area - can you tell me which ranges you recommend joining? Some, maybe most, are by invitation only - but if you could share what you like about each of your range memberships - that will be helpful.

Thanks In Advance!
jwest

I inquired about joining the Los altos GC years ago. It is privately owned, they don't look for new members, & I was told membership costs $4000. ouch

OK - I e-mailed Los Altos - here's the answer:

Los Altos Rod and Gun Club is a California mutual benefit nonprofit
corporation with 164 members, each owning an equal share in the corporation. Some members move out of the area or pass away and the membership is put up for sale at the price requested by the member or the member's family. Memberships may not be sold directly to the purchaser, but must go through the club's board of directors. Potential members are run through a vetting process by the board. If approved, the potential member must purchase the membership from the board at the time of approval.

Recently, memberships have been sold in the $7,000.00 to $8,000.00 range.
Under the Member Rules (which are subject to change from time to time)
membership privileges include:

- free range use during normal hours of operation every day except
Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving.
- Members who have been checked out have use of the members only Practical Pistol ("2P") Range.
- Members receive a 20% discount on most items sold at the club.
- Members may bring up to four guests to use the range (other than the 2P)
under the member's direct supervision on any day except those already
identified.
- We currently have three social events per year, two picnics and a sit down
dinner around the end of the year. Members attend the socials free of
charge, but must pay for guests.

Members must pay annual dues (currently $20.00/year). There are no
mandatory work schedules for members; however, voluntary work on range
projects is done by the members and any help is gratefully accepted.

If you are interested in membership, please reply to this e-mail with your
name, address, and phone number, which we will forward to our Membership
Chairman who will contact you.

Wow. I used to shoot there a lot in the past. I now live in the east bay and really like Chabot on Redwood road in Casrto Valley. The range is kept up real nice and they always seem to have events going on. It's like $14 bucks for non members. I forget what the membership is but if you a couple times a month it's worth it to be a member. They also have a 200yd range open Fridays and the second Saturday of the month.

Wow...They certainly are very proud of said club. It must be a very nice experience indeed, if they are bringing in 7 to 8K per member x 160-some members, and are "non profit".

It kind of depends on what you want out of a range and how far you want to drive.. All clubs have some sort of politic'ing going on no matter where you go. One might be worse than another.

One of the USI member clubs with Diablo being the largest, have a lot going for them. I think membership is $25 a year, $10 initiation, $5 discount if you are an NRA member.

They offer Trap, Skeet, 5-stand, A multi-purpose range, an action range (Currently under USPSA rules, but not affiliated with USPSA), a rifle and pistol range, and an archery range. They also have a clubhouse with ammunition and components for sale at a slightly discounted club price for members.

Richmond Rod and Gun is $50 a year (Pro-rated to when you join), $60 initiation.

They have a 200 yard line, a 5 bay action range with many different flavors of competition year round (USPSA, ICORE, Steel, Cowboy, 3-gun), a Skeet range (non-toxic shot only), trap range (non-toxic shot only), a clubhouse, and a rifle and pistol range with limited components and ammunition for sale.

Chabot is a pretty nice range. I don't have any idea what it costs to join there, but they have a trap range (last I heard), an action range (shared with other venues), and a rifle/pistol range. They might have some other stuff but I don't go there often enough to comment. I think they have limited ammo available for sale. Not sure about components.

Those are the three larger ranges I know about. There is also Davis St in San Leandro, Reeds in the south bay, Targetmasters, Bullseye (not sure if they sell memberships or not), and the range up in Vacaville. There is also Yolo Sportsmen's assn, but that is likely too far for most in the bay area. They have a 3 bay USPSA range that also hosts cowboy action shooting, a rifle and pistol range, and I think trap, skeet, and 5 stand.

There is also the Martinez gun club, but they are mainly trap, 5 stand, and I think international bunker, but I'm not certain that they still do that anymore.

I joined Richmond because they have the best action pistol range in the Bay Area (5 bays dedicated to only action pistol competitions). For public ranges, they have 25-, 100-, and 200-yard offerings.

I go to Metcalf most of the time. Besides regular bench shooting they run multiple groups for rifle and pistol shooting. My favorite is DSC (defencive shooting club). They come every 1st and 3rd Sunday and practice defencive shooting scenarios with pistols. It is $20 per event. No annual commitments. You shoot from the holster most of the time and shoot as fast as you can aim PM me if you want to know mode details.
Also there are multiple rifle shooting groups that usually practice on 200y range.
