Cool Found some old 45 ACP ammo - pics!

These seem kinda rare. Are these collectable?

First is a full box of Winchester 185 grain Silvertips. Did Winchester discontinue these?

Next is a partial box of some Remington shot shells loaded with #12 . That's tiny. It must be "lead dust". Think this will develop enough energy to cycle a 1911-A1?

The Silvertips probably aren't rare or valuable looks like packaging from the 1980's. I believe they are still in production but check Winchester website. Those snake loads probably will not cycle and will lead up your bore quite a bit.

I still have half a box of silvertips in 357Mag. From the mid-80s. No idea whether they're still in production.

I doubt the 45 shotshells will work the action; the 22 snake shot stuff never did. The pellets are small to get a decent pattern at any kind of distance. I wouldn't really count on those loads doing much in a repeatable, consistent sense.

Just checked the Winchester site. They don't have Silvertip 45 ACP ammo listed. I wonder how it would compare to a similar weight God Dot or Golden Saber. I couldn't find any gel tests on YT for the 45 Silvertip.

Silvertips fell out of favor due to over penatration and lack of expansion. Just use them as everyday ball loads. Not worth anything really. Snake loads are a novelty at best. Best snake load is a 230gr fmj

Riverside County Sheriff issued Sikvertips for years, great ammo, but not rare, and kinda tarnished, great for testing out your 45 for hollow points reliablity.

In the early years of Front Sight, many instructors kept a round of snake shot chambered. Ball in the magazine but snake in the chamber.

Rattlesnakes- aka buzz worms were killed daily for the first 4-5 years so the snake shot made sense.

I don’t think the snake shot will reliably run the slide on a semi auto.

That brings back an old memory. Back in the mid 70's, I was an armed security guard in Palm Springs. We all had 38 S&W revolvers. Our office 'gun guru' carried a round of snake shot in chamber #1. He said if a BG didn't get the hint from a round of snake shot to the face, the rest of the rounds would work.

That is why my wife has snake shot in chamber 1 of her .357. Her logic is that gives her a little leeway on the first shot, she will be nervous, likely scared and might miss, the snake shot allows her to feel safer knowing something might hit the bad guy and give her time to properly aim the second shot if its needed. Hey, its her logic, I can actually understand it but my gun is properly loaded from round 1.

The flying ashtray was a CCI/Speer bullet in 45 ACP a 200 grain JHP with an extremely wide cavity. I never heard of any other bullet called that. I think they are long discontinued. I may have a box somewhere still. I had a partial box that was loaded in to Blazer aluminum cases that I recently shot up.

Silvertips are still available. I still have a box that looks like yours. Bought it when I bought my Officer model.

The 45 snake rounds were worthless at anything over 10 feet unless a
really big one .
The 22 lr was / is the same .
My wife carries the 25 ACP in yard - mainly 5 to 6 feet .
As for cycling , sometimes the blazer lr do , but not always .
As far as snake rounds are concerned , all of my pistols work for barking .

Lol, those are not that old.
They are from the 1990's.

Any ammo found in CA is collectible. I do like those Winchester silver tips. I have a few boxes for my 44 Magnum. Put that stuff in a safe deposit box and lock it up. In a few more years there will be many other laws that restrict you from possessing ammo. Who knows what other laws are coming. This is California man. Your rights and privileges are revocable not matter the cost or the law.

California will restrict the right sooner than the country but just remember your rights are revocable at any time in the entire country.
You have no rights, You only have privileges. Those privileges can be revoked at anytime. Don't believe me? Tell that to the 117,000 Japanese that were rounded up and sent off to internment camps in 1942 as enemies of the state with no charges, no due process, nothing. most of whom were natural born citizens.

not trying to fear monger but it wouldn't take much for a new executive order 9066 to happen.

not collectable - too new - boxes in poor condition for a collector. If you don't have a gun in those calibers buy one. Ammo in CA is going to be harder to get than a gun.
