New Sig 522 owner
Im new to firearms and to this forum, this looks like a great forum with lots of good info so I decided to join. I own a tokarev tt-33 handgun that I acquired from my grandfather but have never fired it, I would like to someday. Anyway I decided to purchase a rifle, for my use I felt a .22 rifle would be fine and the fact that ammo is cheap made the choice even easier. I went with a sig 522 classic based on the style, and from the reviews I've read it sounds like a decent shooter. I have about a week before its mine but I'm looking forward to it.
There aren't many gun dealers nearby so I went with big 5 and probably paid a little more than I needed to. Looking on some of the forums I see people have baught these from as low as $299 and quite a few under $400. Its a little late but do you guys know any dealers in the Monterey-San francisco area selling these for under $400? I also would have preferred the swat model but big 5 didn't have them and unless I found a really good deal on one I really didn't want to spend more than I payed for the classic. I did call sig hoping that the quad rail might be something I could purchase in the future at a reasonable price but no luck, I was told they have to install it at a cost of $299, not gonna happen. Have you guys ever seen the sig quad rails come up for sale? |

Thanks, Im sure it will be fun. For now all I have is this rough tt-33, some day I would like to have someone go over it, clean it up, buy a box of ammo and keep it around for home protection or pop a couple targets occasionally. Ill post a pic of the plane jane 522 when I get it in 7 more days.

I have one and really like it. Mine is a first generation so it did not come with sights. Also mine had the old recoil spring rod and had to be upgraded by SIG to the new type. They sent me one of these for free and it took all of 5 minutes to install. I have a Leapers 4x RGB tactical scope on mine and it is a tack driver. Mine has NEVER failed on any ammo whatsoever.

I paid $460ish for mine but I got the 20" barrel. As far as the rail goes, I plan on eventually putting a Samson Quad Rail on it. That's the only one i've found that makes one specific to the Sig 522 other than the one Sig sells.
I don't get mine until next week but i'll post pics once I get it. |

I was in the same boat as you. I ended up buying mine at Big 5 as well. I was lucky when I purchased it because I have a 10% coupon which saved me tax. Ive ran about 1000 rounds in 2 weeks so far. I would go for the samson rail. It looks nice and pretty simple to put on. I will also eventually put one on my sig too. Here is a picture of mine.

I bought the sig rails seperate. I have a utg tac light and a utg tactical bipod. they hold up pretty well because of the minimal recoil. Also im running a weaver 1-4 scope and a vortex sparc not shown.

So, I decided to go back and talk to the manager that told me the rails were included, glad I did because it turns out they are including the rail kit with the purchase of the 522, for some reason the other salesman didn't know about it even though it's been a promo at least in that store for months. That sweetend the deal a bit.
While I was there I noticed the hk416d was on sale, down from over $700 to $589. I don't know anything about the gun but it felt nice and looked pretty bad ***. |

Finally got to pick it up yesterday, I hope to get to fire it soon. When I looked at it in store I thought I saw a sling in the case, maybe not. Do these usually include a sling? Also no sticker, bummer lol. It has the lock, manual, small tube of lube, sights, larger but pad, 10rnd mag,and the rail kit they threw in.
Heres a couple pics, in the bottom pic you can see the non removable flash hider. |

I bought at Big 5 too. I didnt have the sling, its probably not included. I have everything else you mentioned in the package except the small lube and larger butt pad. Never mind the lube, but does everyone have the larger butt pad included in their Classic package? Btw, if you need more mag, get the ones from 44mag.com. Black Dog Machine 10rd X-form, Steel Lip, either smoked or black. I have both color after reading reviews that the smoked version was tight. They may be selling new stock because both mags fit perfect, they drop when you release them, and they are easier to load. I dont even use the mag that came with the 522. i actually prefer the "classic" model better than the others, it has the cleanest look imho
mine came with the heavy bbl (which i never use). no sights, no rails. so i went ahead and got the sig 3pc rail kit and a tasco red dot from walmart. my favorite out of all my .22 rifles

I would have bought the curved type just like the one that came with the 522, but the straight kind are the only ones available on that site with CA compliant 10rds and steel feedclips. I never had the older versions but I googled before I bought, and I read complaints about the smoked version being fatter than the black version, so I just bought 2 different kinds. If Im going to order again, Ill get the smoked ones, they look cooler and more modern on the Sig. The springs are softer to load too, but have no misfeeds. 1400 rounds now, no issues.

i have the smoke 10rd ones and the only issue was the "thickness" instead of sanding down each magazine, i went ahead and took sanded the paint off the reciever for more clearance ...no they work perfect...just wish the rifle had a real BOLT HOLD OPEN feature that didnt realy on the magazine to stay open...would be perfect to drop right off once the release was depressed

Does your gas block look like mine, like it's cast and not really black? I was in another big 5 today and saw a 522 that had a different style gas block, it was more sqaure, looked like aluminum and was really black. |

I haven't had a chance to fire it yet but I noticed a couple things while handling the rifle. Without having any experience with firearms like this I don't know what type of tolerance is acceptable or normal.
First thing I found was the play in the charging handle, next is that the storage tube above the gas block is loose feeling and wiggles around easily. Another thing and more important part is the upper to lower receiver has some play, its mostly side to side play but some very very slight front to back movement. Its not a lot but again I don't know whats normal or excessive. The side to side play is my main concern, I can see it, feel and hear it. I would appreciate any info or if you guys notice some of the same issues on your 522's. Thanks. |

Thanks, Ill give that a try. Do you know that fix because your upper had some side to side play too? So I take it this is common?

I placed a tiny bit of electrical tape inside on the top receiver (where it meets the lower) to fix a bit of a wobble. I observed the side to side play, and it looked like it was missing a half millimeter of space. I dont have a picture but when I get a chance Ill post it. It worked for me, I use the same technique to fix wobbles on my airsoft rifles I've shot 400rnds with it, so far so good. The only wobble left is on the retractable stock. I need to get it out to the range, If it shoots good then I guess Ill just have to live with the imperfections. Now I wanna know if I have the "canted gas block" lol, is that something thats easy to see or does it really show at the range when trying to 0 the sights?

It shoots fine, the small play doesn't really move unless you twist the fore grips. I've attached a photo of my quick fix with electrical tape:
Sorry if it's dirty, it'll be cleaned after every 600 rounds. The tape can't be seen when the receiver is closed. It took two layers to stop the play. |

I had just a little side to side play. I found that cutting a small piece of paper and folding it 1-2 times over then inserting it between the receiver and the lower worked extremely well. I imagine adding some electrical tape on the inside of the receiver would do the trick as well. Going to see about coming up with a better solution.
Personally I think it would be awesome to have someone manufacture the lower out of metal to keep it nice and tight. The composite lower is the only downfall of this rifle. |
