My hunting buddy just shot a nice fork this morning. I had to work last night, said they saw 7 bucks and one big stud buck up on the road at the top of the ranch.

Very jealous. A good friend scheduled his wedding this weekend, so I’m tied down...

Good luck!

They are out there today setting up camp.

Please, hunters, take a shovel and bury your crap and toilet paper. No, you are not hunting where nobody has been before. Thirty people were there last week but they all buried their **** so it just looks virgin.

Girlfriend got her license for the first time this year. She went once with me last season as a non-hunter and wanted to give it a try. She's in far better shape than I am but she got her *** kicked by that steep sierra high country. We put in 3 solid hunts today from dark to dark and uncovered some really cool new spots "just one hill over" we are going to try next weekend.

We saw 6 deer total while on foot. 4 does, one unknown big bodied deer that GF pushed down to me but I only saw the butt as it slipped into the woods, and one legal buck that someone must have spooked because it was at full sprint toward me. I heard it crashing and I got my gun up and ready just in case it was a good one. I didn't even see him until he broke out of the brush 20' away from me but I couldn't tell if he was even legal so I let him turn uphill. Ended up he was an OK fork, in hindsight I probably would have taken the shot if he had stopped, but not worried about letting him go. My focus is to get my GF and son on their first deer.

In the prior 5 seasons I've seen a total of 3 hunters above 7,000' in D5 after leaving my truck. Today alone I saw 3 in places I've never even seen a boot print. Trucks were parked in my first two go to spots before the sun even came up so we made a last minute adjustment. Sierra Pacific and the Donnell fire really put some pressure on the remaining national forest lands.

Overall, one of the best opening days I've had.

I’ll be setting up camp week from now in eastern Oregon for deer for a week.
I’ll have my oldest daughter and youngest boy with me. It will be hunters first hunt ever.
He’s super stoked. He’s only 7 so he will be carrying a red rider BB gun to have something and start learning muzzle control.
Month from today I’ll be heading back up to camp and set up for my any bull elk tag. My oldest and I drew it with only 1 point each! Lucky. So I hope we’ll be lucky again in the field.
Sure nice to hunt deer in same unit as elk so I can scout at the same one.

Yeah - I have a D3-5 tag as well, but I'll leave the Opening Day madness to other folks and won't be going out until sometime in the first two weeks of October. I've never hunted that zone before, so I'll just throw a dart and do some recon, enjoy my time outdoors, and hope to get lucky.

Hot and dry AF. Kinda funny that I had deer tracks on top of my 1.5 hour old tracks going the other way. Like two passing ships in the night...

Great time can't wait to do it again!

We were surrounded by elk at night the rut was just shutting down. Nothing like being around the campfire drinking beer and picking out 7 different bulls surrounding the herd bull. Too bad the season didn't start the next morning.

So we worked the flats on a few smaller herds and put one down first evening hunt. 350 yds shot ran 150 and layed up under a tree to bleed out. The hunter couldn't find it that night. The next morning we find it under the Ravens and a lion gutted the cow for my buddy.

Yep...... Mother Nature has eaten off this cow

So the next day 29 degrees in the morning. Park at the corral and glass as the sun comes up. I spot a 50 plus herd walking out of the flats to a small rise with trees. They saw us and were skittish I think my buddies old diesel running an hour before was too much.....

Nothing doing here. Been out 4 days total so far. Saw a few deer before deer season, an elk cow in a unit I don't have a cow tag for and not a single buck.

Only good so far is my son got to take a shot at a doe. He missed, but at least he got to take a shot.

Just back from X2. I was seeing 30-40 does and 4-5 legal bucks everyday. I passed a few MUCH bigger than the one I ended up taking but time was running out and the wife still has a B tag to fill.

I was thinking that the crowds would thin out after the second weekend but they seemed to double. Everyone wanted to be there for the last week and word was out that the deer were in the burn I had mostly to myself the first few days.

They only give out 190 tags for X2 so that's 190 hunters, I met 400 of those 190. That's not much of an exaggeration, one new camp that sprung up had 9 guys, 3 4X4 trucks, and 2 side by side off road rigs. When I questioned how big a group they applied for they laughed and pointed to one skinny guy and said he was the only one with a tag. That's 9 guys hunting with 1 tag??? In the end it was just getting too crowded. The other thing I didn't like was that the zone is pretty flat and anywhere someone could snake a quad between trees there was a road. Every-time I got out to walk in areas that showed no roads on the map I ran into guys on quads. I dogged 4 different bucks to road hunters just the first few days. I did get a few hearts and livers from the bucks I helped others get.
