If it were closer yes. Unless the job pays more than 15 bucks an hour I can't even look at a commute more than 30 miles away.

There are tons of jobs, the problem is people think they are too good for them (customer service, scrub toilets) or dont want to step down in pay.
I was layed off and unemployed for a while, I looked and searched for jobs that I wanted and didn't find nothing......Well when the rent was due and the ice box was empty, I REALLY looked and found a job in a week. Trust me, I'm a manager for a large parts company that sees people "looking" for a job and people that want a job. Sure everybody wants a 10+$ a hour job (and that isnt enough) but what makes you qualified for that job? why should I hire you? do you really WANT that job or your just looking?? I'm young and I'm thirsty for improving my quality of life.....trust me it shows, management reads you like a large print news paper. |

Simple... MOVE. California is a terrible place for people starting out. I swear if I were 18 I'd be OUTTA HERE the minute I picked up my diploma from HS. The schools here (colleges, comm. colleges, etc) are terrible and/or you can't get in a class you are required to have. Jobs here are low paying (even I.T. is paying under the national average, I know). Houses here, forget it... you'll never afford one.... and the gun laws... oh boy.
But yes... you want a job? MOVE. I've got a job and I'm in the process of interviewing across the country right now with another job. You can have mine when I leave! |

I love how we all embrace the 1st Amendment of the Constitution here. I had one of my comments deleted in another thread. |

Well it took me 4 months plus one week to find a job, and I won't be starting for at least another week probably two. Persistence paid off and it will be much easier to look for a higher paying job while I have an income. It is substantially less pay (~$10k) less than my previous job but I will still live comfortably and it is another opportunity for me to grow personally and professionally.
I know its not necessarily encouraging to hear success stories of other people, but its a living testament of keeping your chin up to reflect a positive attitude when it does come time for interviewing. (form a list of KSA questions, or I can email you one) The longer it doesn't rain, the sooner it will. If you need help finding a job lean on your friends and become a bit of a social butterfly and chat everyone up, even if its at the checkout line at the grocery store. Good luck man and don't give up. I know you hold a bit of resentment toward some of the "old geezers" (and I even disagree with some of their suggestions) but it is important to ask for advice in what you can do for improvement. |

Without restating the obvious times are very tough.
Here's an example. I recently put out an ad on CL for an entry level position requesting those with a Construction Management degree or Civil engineering degree (less desirable). I got probably 14 resumes even though I was offering $12.50 an hour with no bennies. Ended up hiring a guy at $15 with the CM degree (4 year). He was also in the AF in Iraq which helped me like him more. I actually feel bad for how desperate people are right now and that makes me thankful for what I've got. I got my last three jobs thanks to networking and knowing people in my career field. To be honest if I wasn't networked I wouldn't have gotten any of them probably.

If you google something like "Jobs in OC" or "Jobs in_____" <insert county here>, a county website pops up with available jobs and upcomming job fairs. A lot of what I saw require experience, but there were some good ones that just required you to have a positive attitude, strong work ethic and most importantly, speak English. After taking one useless class (or possibly non-useless class if your lucky) for a semester, the following semester you gain priority over class selection, and become an "existing" student, meaning you just register for classes on a date specified according to the first letter of your last name, and you get priority over new students. You will still run into waitlists, but now there are only a few people on them and you have a good chance of getting the class. If you want something bad enough, take it, don't wait around for it to kick you in the nuts. I have ideas for 3 stand alone fiction novels and another series of 6 fiction novels that could possibly jump start my career as an author, on top of my current career. I could sit around all day with my hand in my pants, thinking about how for some weird reason, these books havent written themselves yet. Or I could go to my local Gun Rights supporting Starbucks and slave away and making those ideas for novels a reality. You need to shape up your attitude and start working for something, or next thing you know you'll be waving a sign at an "Occupy" protest. I understand you feel you have looked and looked and looked and applied and kissed *** till nothing will wash away the taste of **** in your mouth, and its frustrating, I know. But if you keep an open mind and network, you'd be surprised what you can find. Last edited by APEG Armory; 03-11-2012 at 11:27 PM.. |

Update again.
RCC emailed me about possibly getting my foot in the door by playing again. So starting this fall I am marching with a horn. Its a total of 5 units, So BOG waiver said ha, no. Unless I find other classes. As for the jobs, they are getting even more ridiculous. Must speak spanish is rampant in the Inland Empire. My disgust for this and the language (it's like french to me. I hate how it sounds) has put me over the edge. I have called every single opportunity with gusto and charm, when they ask if I speak spanish, I tell them politely no. All of a sudden the position was filled!!! I have applied, called back, emailed, spoke to in person, every single opening or lead. All of them ended the same. We will let you know.... California is dead, and I am stuck right in the middle of it.

there is no arguing about this subject bro. there just arent jobs out there right now. the i.e. and san bernardino county have the highest unemployment rate in the nation. period. that is why employers can and will be picky and that is why you are unable to find a job. it does no use arguing with anyone on here about it or asking for advice on here cause its just not going to help you. im in your position only much worse off right now. and i was in the military so i can tell you it aint gonna get you jack nada except free health care from the va.

Wow... lots of butthurt in this thread. Makes me tingle inside.
Go look at the market right now. See what is out there. With what I have at my disposal is what I can work with. If that means I have a bit of a gas guzzler and need a bit more in pay to work farther out that so be it.
