The link has apprenticeship info that reads there's no age limit, and discrimination to applicants over 40 is illegal.

The JAC will not discriminate against apprenticeship applicants or apprentices based on race, religious creed (including religious dress and grooming), color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability (including cognitive disability), medical condition, genetic information, marital status, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, and medical conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth, or breast feeding), sexual orientation, sex stereotype, gender, gender identity, gender expression, age 40 or older, and military and veteran status. The JAC will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate, conduct, and administer this apprenticeship program as required under Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations, part 30, and the equal opportunity regulations of the State of California.

It is against the law for a sponsor of an apprenticeship program registered for federal purposes to discriminate or retaliate against, or harass, an apprenticeship applicant or apprentice based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age (40 years or older), genetic information, or disability. The sponsor must ensure equal opportunity with regard to all terms, conditions, and privileges associated with apprenticeship.

I went through the apprenticeship after leaving the Marines back in 1997. Itís a great gig for non college grad people who canít stand to be in an office. Iíve ran everything from 300 ton cranes to Subway Tunnel Boring Machines in SoCal. Great pay and benefits. The instructors are good people, they love Vets and as a bonus you are eligible to get GI Bill pay as well while also being paid on the job.

My friend did this, did the training etc. bad experience from what i know its based on test score to get placed for training. From there they'll train you and you'll get work, but that work is based on needs and seniority. Pay is good but not working for sometime a month or two is hard which is why he left. Probably good for someone with few bills and that is young.

Very best of luck to all who apply. Just please remember to learn what they teach and do not scrimp on safety once you are actually on the job. People die in these positions, and it is often because the clients are pushing the contractor to finish quickly.

Dumb question, but can you relocate during an apprenticeship? I'm figuring u can't or at the very least it's quite difficult, but I'm looking for a career change and I'm also looking to move out of CA in the near future... PMs appreciated..

From what I remember 20 years ago the test is kinda like the asvab, mainly general knowledge with a lot of math and fairly simple engineering problems. Vets got an extra 10 pts on top back then too, not sure if thatís still true though.

Let me chime in here. My first calguns post, but I've been an OE since 2004. Not long compared to my coworkers, I just wish I'd discovered this line of work years earlier.

The IUOE Training Trust is a great way for men, and women, to learn this trade. I didn't start until I was 54 ... oldest guy in my class, older than the instructors. I'm 67 now. Apprentice training is free, working wage/benefits from day-one are excellent. IIRC 10% of OE work force must be Apprentices so there IS work when you start out.

FYI; there is a Training Site up here in San Luis Obispo, not big, not a lot of different iron, but the basics; blade, scraper, dozer, hoes & excavators, trucks (CDL training), small mobile cranes, and forklifts. No Heavy Duty repair training here.

So what should someone expect after taking the test and passing? What are the steps in hiring/training process? Thanks in advance.
