Arrow CG's Bug Out Bag thread Inventory (consolidated in one master list) NOW IN PDF 3/9/10

(PDF in Post #2)

I've been working several hours a night for the past week to consolidate the BOB thread ideas into one single list so it is easier to look at and plan. There are a lot of good suggestions, many of which were branded, so I tried to generalize wherever possible, with occasional brand references.

I have added a few things from other ideas I have read about as well (emergency preparedness kits as well as BOB's). Please take what you find valuable and leave what you don't. I do not think everything is necessarily practical if you have to carry these items, but valuable for preparedness planning none the less. I have loosely categorized things into groups to make it easier to read through and check off.

I believe this to be complete through post #566. If people find it valuable, I can update this list from time to time.

Hope this helps....

Great job, but what good is a BOB if you need an 18-wheeler and a forklift?

For me I would look to the list and figure out what would be most needed in my enviroment and training level and just try to build from that. I don't think you need every item on the list, but it might help you catch something you really need and are missing.

Thanks OP

Precisely! That was the idea. I tried to make as complete a list as possible and you could choose based on your needs what did and did not apply. I mentioned in the beginning it was a mix between BOB and disaster preparedness kit, so some may be for bugging in, the rest for bugging out. The decision is yours. I just tried to make sure I covered everyone's ideas so as not to forget anything and let each individual decide what best applied to them. As CH mentioned, as you read through, you might find a thing or two you forgot or didn't think about...

awesome compilation, i love it just pick what you need for what kind of terrain , AOP and things you deem un-replaceable. i will definitely be using this list for reference. i was thinking for barter a good box of .22LR would be an easy trade ( every one should have a .22) and as far as cash get hard cash like sterling silver or gold something that can't be made up like our paper money system.

Reasonable assertion although I would be a little afraid of giving a guy who is out of ammo more, that he could then use to "trade" back all of my possessions to him....

I had actually forgotten that one post from post-disaster (or was it civil unrest?) in a South American country suggested low quality gold jewelry for barter purposes, as there would not be a solid way to check it's quality in place so you probably would not get more value from 24k than from 10k gold... With the price of gold these days though (all time highs), it's going to be pretty hard to find "low cost jewelry" to buy up though...

Certainly worth adding though...

Thanks for the list! Just don't forget about the original BOB thread. It has a lot of useful info besides just the list of items. Things like what others are packing, stage 1,2,3 etc. Car bags, stay at home bags etc. etc.

Maybe this list can be merged with the other thread (maybe added to the first post or something).

Hey pretty good list but for a true BOB all that would be far too heavy... You need just enough to get where you have to get IMHO anyway...

Excellent job on the list. There were a few things on there that I might add to my gear now that I hadn't thought of.

How much would a bag weigh with all that in it???? Not sure I want to bug out all with all that on my back. Maybe we need two lists? One for "Get out of here ASAP on foot bag" and one for "get out of here in your vehicle bag". Better idea would be to place in BOLD what things would be suggested for a "on foot" bag. So just one list with two options for everyone.

Please go back and read. This is not a list of everything you should have in a single bag. This is a compilation of everyone's lists from hundreds of posts. It's for ideas. Pick and choose from it to help you develop your own BoB.

If you try to use condoms as water containers, be sure you're getting the sort WITHOUT lube!

Also, they're pretty poor water containers (need two hands to move them around, kinda fragile, etc.) so don't skimp on something like a true water bottle/canteen/bladder thinking these will fill that role.

Since so many seem to confuse the list as being intended to cover everything that you would carry (not the intent), I have transferred the list to a tabular checklist.

Please use it to decide for yourself if each item in the list applies to you for a Level I~III bug-out kit, a Bug-In kit, or not applicable to your needs (N/A).

I hope this helps clarify and makes it easier for people to plan....

I have a large kit similar to that. deff something that would have to stay almost stationary (way too heavy/bulky)or stay in the truck while im on the move, sooooo.. I have several smaller kits that contain smaller ammounts of gear that the large one has.

Thanks, SV Rider - I appreciate all the time and effort you put into creating that checklist.

My feelings about BOB's and the like are summed up as follows: A firearms instructor under whom I once studied said you use a pistol to fight to your rifle and you win the fight with your rifle. Along the same lines, the bug-out-bag you build should lead you to something better- it is not the end by any means.

For *me* that means keep the BOB light so I can move fast - all it has to do is get me from wherever I am when the event happens back home where my loved ones, gear, and supplies are.

As stated elsewhere, one's *knowledge* of field craft /bush craft is the most important thing because gear can be lost or stolen and your stash of goods can burn or otherwise become inaccessible. You need to know how to get by with nearly nothing, that way, if you *have* all your stuff, you're sitting pretty.

$0.02 deposited....

Will that bag fit into the glove box?

On a serious note jetboil stoves are very handy for those instant hiking cook bags, coffee and boiling water. I wont leave home without one. I have been stranded in the snow and cooked dinner inside my car. My wife even made dinner one night on a 14 hour drive so I did not have to stop. Great light weight tool everyone needs. I have that stove and about 12 ready to cook dinners in my trunk at all times.

Thank you for putting this together, I had already started doing the same when I found this!

(Missed them on my first read) I would add rubber gloves in medical supplies, Nonetheless, I like the chemical resistant kind that I steal from my little brother!

Man these lists can get endless with all the gadgets/tools/equipment I THINK I need!

You could add a rat trap to the list.
