Default NorCal AK Build Party: After action report

On November 5, 2011 the first 'True NorCal AK Build Party' was held in Redding. At 9AM the participants began arriving at the designated location, Arisaka was our host and he graciously made his house and garage available for the event. We had 3 builds for this event, 2 from flats, one from a prebent NDS.

Alex$ came up from Chico with the sandblast cabinet, parkerizing system, tools, special tools, and served as the build supervisor due to his previous build experience.

Arisaka, Rock6.3 and the participants all provided tools which were freely shared as needed.

Participants in the inagural 'True NorCal AK Build Party' were:
SmellofCordite
Arisaka
JB-NorCal
Jeepers
Alex$
Rock6.3
MrVash

Next time we plan to have:
1. More drill presses
2. More bench grinders
3. More wire feed welders
4. More participants

For those who missed out, you will have to make do with a few photographs since we were too busy building and bsing to take many photos

Mine was fully together last night, then I tore it apart to work on some things. Bolt carrier is hanging on the hammer and my gas block is canted so I am working things out. As promised I will post pics as soon as possible.

An AK that is not working right? Did you try adjusting it with a rock?

Not yet just smoothing some things out, don't think the canted gas tube is really an issue, but it would be nice to have it straight.

If you continue to have bolt/hammer issues let me know, I can probably help work it out.

As far as the gas block, blame the Romanians, that is how they built it. In order to straighten it, you would need to press it off, turn it "straight" then press it back on.

Thanks Alex, I will shoot you a pm if it doesn't work out. I understand this is an issue with Romanian AK's. Do you think moving the gas block would block the hole?

I didn't really notice the gas block being off when aligning the barrel pin, it can't br that far off. It probably wouldn't block the gas hole if you did move it.

If it were me, I wouldn't move it unless it REALLy bugs you or it doesn't cycle properly. I say test fire it and see how it goes.

I may be going to Oroville next weekend.

I am ENTIRELY in for the next one.

I have no tools at all to bring (except for perhaps a Dremel by then) but I shall provide beer and hearty tales from beyond the horizon.

I am looking for a 74 or PSL kit as well. This would be my first build, so I am educating myself intensely before pulling the trigger on a kit purchase.

faded- look @ AK-Builders 74 kits. They have ones with US made barrels already installed which would make it easier for ya.

I was actually looking at those last night. I read some information about US barrels being a PITA to fit right, but if it is already pressed in then I would be good to go. Thanks for the heads up!

Please, if you do this again leave me a PM.

The only reason I havent bought a "kit"yet is I dont posess any of the tools, I have the skill though! Being a plumber helps when it comes to stuff like this.
Anyway, I'm in Ukiah and would travel anywhere North I could always get a room if its up on I5.
Thank, BC

This is something I really want to do, but have no experience with and no tools. If you guys would be willing to help teach me that would be awesome. I am also in Ukiah.

Let me know next time there is a NorCal build party! I wouldn't mind making the trip over to Redding to hang out and build some AK's. I have the AK-Builder jigs and tools and such. And could bring whatever is still needed like a welder or press.

Here is what I worked on today, put the last coat of wipe-on poly on the furniture, bent flats for an ak74 and ak47 and then riveted on the trigger guard's and started fitting the front trunnions:

4130taco@gmail.com if there is interest. I would like to build a ak but i have no experiance with them.

Hey guys, I am in Redding too and looking to take on my first build. Let's set a date and start a list of those who can attend. I look forward to meeting everyone.

I don't have cash to put together my own rifle just yet, but I would like to attend if another Nor-Cal build party goes down. I do have a good selection of tools including a good wire feed/mig welder, grinders, and the experience to run them. For me it would be great just to meet more members, and expand my personal firearms education.

I would also like to attend the next build party. I have plans for a sweet AMD-65 in 'sporting' configuration, but not all the tools or experience.
