Default son being deployed ..

My son is being deployed soon. He is combat search and rescue with the 129th.
What are some good things to send him while he is there ? I dont want to bother him with a lot of questions before he leaves. I do want to send things he can use or maybe this he will just miss. Any thoughts for those of you that have been there ? Thanks in advance... TM

Good socks, toiletries, magazines, snacks, but don't go overboard on any one thing like my mom did my last deployment. I asked for canned pineapple, she sent a flat rate box filled completely with nothing but pineapple. Then there was the boxes of nothing but peanuts, 5 pound bags of jolly ranchers, tootsie pops, I shared a lot with others, was responsible for probably dozens of cavities from all the candy I gave away to the local kids where we patrolled.

Hygiene products that you dont need water to use. the waterless hairwash shampoo is amazing when you are outside the wire for a couple of days. Baby wipes , powdered drink mix , trail mix , beef jerky , gum and Copenhagen Longcut Wintergreen. Oh and find out what his favorite candy is , after a long day sometimes its a big comfort.

oh... water balloons ...

I think everyone else hit it pretty well. The best things to send are those that will be most useful. High end socks and foot powder, good dry high-energy snack foods, hygiene products.

I know everyone loves cookies and candy, but Jesus folks, we can only eat so many dumb-dumb suckers, tootsie rolls, and chocolate chip cookies. The Taliban is just going to start waiting until we all die of diabetes

Definitely, in that case. Thick, warm, winter ones. Gloves too maybe, if you can find fire resistant ones. It gets COLD up in that *****.

I also recall seeing super-cool-guy ballistic face masks designed for gunners...

I will pass on the good wishes and prayers to him.. we do appreciate all of them!

Baby wipes, powdered drink mixes (gatorade, coffee's, lemonade), non-chocolate candy (think about stuff that doesn't melt), good socks, waterless shampoo, toiletries (toothpaste, tp, toothbrush, floss, Q-TIPS (always forgot those)),

I would counter that there seems to be plenty of the personnel hygiene stuff in Afghanistan. I always like homemade stuff like cookies or cool tactical stuff like high end flashlights, MAGPUL magazines (if his unit didnt issue them), etc.

Normally the idea is to send stuff that is not readily available at the PX, BX, trailer etc. I had buds who did not smoke or dip but they stocked up on those items to sell to other guys in the field who were nicotine junkies. Pretty sad, but it happens.

Cold weather gear, baby wipes and tobacco are all always safe bets. Even if he doesn't need them at the time, someone around him will

I've had many friends deployed over the years. A common request beside chewing tobacco was for sunglasses. Everyone seemed to want a specific kind of Oakley sunglasses. I'm not sure if there's limitations to what the can and can't wear. It's probably best to ask first before sending. Thanks your son for his service from us on Calguns.

Dip... high end stuff, whether or not he dips. Great for trade, and worth its weight in gold when out in the field, or at a COP. Good socks are an excellent choice - nothing feels better than putting on dry socks after a ****ty day.

Also, being deployed is about the only time that the Army makes sense. He's going to enjoy himself.

Can't go wrong with baby wipes and jerky. Maybe hold off on boxes and let him ask for what he needs or wants. That way you avoid sending stuff he won't use.

I'm not MIL, but i recommend the Streamlight microstream or equivalent. I have bazillion lumen light on me and in my pack all the time, but that thing gets used like I never would have believed (the wife got it for me after talking to some friends who had done several tours and the all had the same experience).

Do not google fleshlight and do not send one

Now for the truth one Father to another. You are the one that needs things. You and I can take anything the world sends our way but when it comes to Son this is a hurt we have a hard time taking. Build yourself a safety net for those times you are alone and thinking of the Boy. More than once I sat at three in the morning with one of our group holding hands and supporting each other. It helps in my humble opinion. Now have the wife reinforce the buttons on all your shirts for when you tell other men of your son and his adventures. They have a tendency to pop off. The last thing you need is a clean hankerchief for those times a quick tear finds its way into your eye when talking about the boy.

Thank you both for what you are doing.

Respectfully,
Bill

Good job Mom and Dad.
