What is a good lube for semi-auto .45 ACPs?
What is a good lube for semi-auto .45 ACPs?
Does anyone here fire them dry? Does anyone use silicone grease? Does anyone prefer gun oil? Does anyone just use Hoppe's bore cleaner as a lite lube? Last edited by Shoobee; 02-02-2012 at 9:39 PM.. |

If its for the CZ 97....
I use hoppes gun grease on the rails, slip 2000 on the action. The rails are pretty tight, just about anything would work, I've just had good luck with what I use.

I will check it out when I return to the gunshop, thanks. You are right, the rails look really tight. Tighter than I have ever seen on any ACP design. Last edited by Shoobee; 02-02-2012 at 10:18 PM.. |

I was taught very little oil, on the rails is all you need. I just started using the kit sold by a member here lubrikit.com . Seems to work pretty darn well on the glock 21. Smooooth (smoother) action.

So you have a Colt 1911? ACP Design?
Running steel, aluminum, and polymer frames dry is not a good idea. Even with polymer guns some lubrication is needed. Grease is typically better on steel rails than oil. Grease traps the oil and holds it on the surface. Oil can fling off more easily, especially when hot. Unless you gun is submerged in oil, grease is a better applicator. Use the oil for non sliding surfaces. |

If it slides, grease it. If it rolls, use oil. For grease, I'm a big fan of Maxima. I'm a motorcycle guy as well, so I use what's in the shop.

I use Mil
I ues Mil Comm for my firearms, shotgun, and rifle. I use the TW25 grease and TW2500 oil. I also recently purchased the Lubriplate from a member here. It seems similar to the Mil Comm. Both good stuff, non hazardous and evironmentally safe. Buy the syringe, it makes it easy for application. |

I've been known to prefer Redline Red-moly assembly lube. They have a bearing grease I've used too but it's kinda goopy. A very little dab'll do ya'. The grease I prefer to use on my glock slide and rails. The Springfield is kinda snug fitted. Looks a lot like the stuff I see in little white syringes in gun shops for way too much money.

I use the Hoppes gun oil that is in the orange bottle that came with my gun cleaning kit. It's nothing magical, just oil. When I run out, I'll just refill the bottle with motor oil. I have some spray can lithium grease, I might try that on the rails.
Honestly, I don't think it matters that much as long as something is there. It's a machine and machines need lube on parts that rub together. Don't stress about it too much, I'm sure you could use bacon grease and it would be fine (until it went rancid on the gun). Probably smells good at the range too! |

Isn't assembly lube designed to burn off after a short amount of time? That was my understanding of it... Other than that, isn't the red line stuff SUPER DOOOPER RED? Like, if it gets on your skin or clothes it will stain? |

Lubriplate SFL-1 grease and Lubriplate FMO-350-AW oil is what I'm trying now. I had been using white lithium grease before and it worked well.

For about the 75,980 time - Slide Glide, TW25b, synthetic bicycle grease, or any light weight synthetic grease - for frame/slide rails and slide/barrel contact areas.

This. The Sig has yet to even see the range and has been disassembled more times than any other tool I own.
Using CLP plus Mobile 1 on the slide & barrel thus far. For some reason, no one local carries anything but CLP, so I'm a little short on grease suppliers. Wanted to give Froglube a go, but have yet to find a local dealer with FL in stock. For that matter, have yet to find a local dealer with any selection of 9mm ammo in stock. Quit going nuts on the ammo, will you guys? Last edited by Bw511; 02-03-2012 at 4:50 PM.. |

Ballistol. It cleans, it lubricates, it tastes great on salads.. well maybe not that last part but imho it's great stuff. It comes in aerosol spray and liquid. It's not the best smelling stuff but it does leave a nice thin coat and is very comparable to rem oil or clp in terms of lubricity.
I have been using the stuff for years and I just can't recommend it enough. To put it in perspective, I used to clean my firearms using gun scrubber, hoppes9, rem oil, and then finishing off with some RIG or wiping down with a silicon cloth... Ballistol does the job of all of them, no joke. |

I have a Sig with extremely tight rails. Probably the tightest in the industry. Definitely the tightest for a P226-Design. I put one application of Frog Lube on those badboy tight rails just once about 5 years ago (when Frog Lube was still in the prototype-stages in testing - see, I actually know the Navy SEALS operator who invented the stuff, so I had carte blanche) and I have since thrown ALL of my other weapons lubrication systems away (or just given them to those who don't know any better). I didn't even have to buy any Frog Lube when it came to market because that first application keeps me GTG indefinitely! In fact, I could probably heat up my P226-Design sidearm today; let it ooze the Frog Lube out of it's pores; then put it in a .5 oz. ramekin and sell it for $15 bucks since it is true prototype Frog Lube. To the OP ("Shoobee") - get Frog Lube......it's got everything else out there BEAT.
And listen to this guy, because he knows his stuff. His Sig has yet to be fired at a range, yet he still knows what works and what doesn't in his barrel & slide system: Quote:

FWIW I use Tetra-Grease seems to work just hunky-dory, Really grease is just grease just don't use a grease that is too thick tends to gum up the works. I was using a medium weight Teflon bicycle grease on my 1911 and on one very cold morning at the range (high 30's/low 40's) the gun had feeding issues. I went to Tetra-Grease and the gun has never missed a beat. The bicycle grease was just too stiff at the low temp.
