Default CCW Defensive handgun training

So I completed a required CCW training course to get my CCW in Orange county.

Don't get me wrong the course was good, but it was lacking in tactics. What would be a good course that I can take to skill up now that I have my CCW. I would like to take something in the future like a week long class like a Mag 40, but I want to work up to that.

I don't shoot IDPA or anything else but would like to try one day. I am in south Orange County but could travel for the right class and trainer.

In the mean time:

Set up a target at home. Get some snap caps. Practice draw and dry fire. Use a timer.

Finger off the boom switch, solid presentation, mount the trigger, acquire sights and fire. You can get a LOT of muscle memory built at home. Practice reloading from your ccw set up as well.

Most self defense situations will be draw fire only and a mix of a lot of home practice with some range time can solidify your skills.

I shoot pretty often but still try to get 20-30 minutes drawing and dry firing a day at home.

Try FAST OC advanced CCW drill nights:

There are also youtube videos that give you a taste for some of the stuff they do.

CCW course is just to make sure you can hit the broad side of a barn and that you can carry safely enough in a suitable holster. It's up to you to get to the level of proficiency you deem appropriate, much like it would be in free states.

You are doing the right thing by looking for additional training. I would suggest IDPA/USPSA to get you comfortable with handling the gun, loading/unloading, shooting in front of a lot of people, shooting on the move, hitting targets under pressure, etc.

I highly recommend DFT in Fernley NV http://dftraining.net/index.php?dft=dft_course_handgun

Rudy Waldinger teaches from real life experience using a handgun defensively against serious adversaries.

Fernley is about 30mins east of Reno and his classes are very good values

Reno is a bit far to be practical for at least a few months. It would be cool. I like that area.
