Default AAR: LMS Defense, Urban Defense, 12April2013

On 2/12/13 LMS Defense held our Urban Defense course at Metcalf range in San Jose.

The Urban Defense course was designed for persons who carry concealed whether as civilians or law enforcement either on or off duty. As such one of the main focuses of the course is concealed carry methods and presentation from concealment. We had six enthusiastic students all consisting of civilians one of whom was also a firearms instructor and a truly professional individual.

The weather, as has been the case for most of this entire year, could not have been more perfect. Another day on the range with blue skies and cotton candy clouds.

Four students carried Glocks and two SW M&P9ís. All of them ran flawlessly and the only hiccup of the day was a squibb from a box of factory new ammunition. Although it was cleared in relative short order the affected student was glad that he had brought a second handgun to the class so that the malfunction could be cleared on a break. Holsters were from a variety of manufacturers both leather and kydex. Aside from some minor issues with loose hardware all of them performed well.

Class began with admin and safety briefs and then an in depth discussion of carry methods and the reasoning behind them. We then moved the range and after shooting the LMS Defense Benchmark drill worked on presentation from the holster when carrying concealed. A good deal of time was spent on presentation methods and clearing clothing out of the way for a fast and smooth presentation. These skills were then coupled with working on getting fast accurate hits with a fast presentation from the holster. Reloading from concealment was presented as well as different methods and locations for carrying a reload. Close quarters target engagement with one and two hands was taught and then we moved into one handed drawing techniques.

After breaking for lunch we returned to the range and worked on more presentation from the holster in conjunction with movement and positional shooting. Several head to head drills were conducted using a plate rack to demonstrate reactionary gap as well as the need for fast accurate hits. Working with armed friends as well as unarmed family members was presented and practiced. Throughout the day after each new skill was learned it was added to the other skills in progression. The day concluded with a movement and fire drill which combined all of the concepts that had been taught.

Metcalf range was once again a great place to train. The facilities are great and the staff helpful. I look forward to training there again soon.
