Question LEO's Input on # of .45 magazines carried. Options for Quad Mag Pouch.

Hello Officers.

I will be attending the POST Requalification course soon and have since upgraded to a Sig P220 in .45.

For any officers that carry a .45, do you carry more than 2 extra magazines? Would you recommend for me to carry 2 extra, 4 extra, or 2 and a single.

What are your recommendations for brand and type of double and quad pouches.

Thank you in advance.

Jeff Kessel

Off duty I carry a 1911 and usually two extra mags...
ON duty I carry 4 glock 22 mags plus the one in the gun...there is no such thing as too much ammo....

for on duty this might be a bit much.. Clint Smith just wrote a short article about using it for ccw...

Glock 21 with 3 mags by 13 rounds each and one in the tube = 40 rounds.

Single Stack mags on Duty - there really isn't really a reason not to carry 4 + 1.

afirm...
I have seen several pouches that held two single stackers to a pouch...that should work pretty well..

Not a cop, but did go to school and get cert'd.

Always 4+1 mags no matter what gun. My trainer carried a 1911 with 8 mags. Had a leather quad on the belt and a DeSantis ankle rig with 2 mags.

You can never, ever have too many mags in a gun fight.

Recall that off duty officer during the mall shooting a couple years ago that was armed with a Kimber. Epic fail for only having one 8rd mag in the gun and no back up mags. I'm a civilian CPL holder and carry 9+1 in my 1911 (10mm Auto) with 3 backups; two on belt and one in the cargo pouch plus two more in the vehicle.

The SOP that was drilled in our heads during cop school was:
  • Minimum 4 mags plus the gun.
  • Always carry extra mags in the car READILY AVAILABLE.
  • Always carry a BUG and at least two extra mags. Preferably a smaller version of your duty weapon.
  • Always carry a rifle in the car with at least 4 mags.
  • Rifle mag should always be 20rd in case you have to go low to return fire once you get your rifle.

When I was in cop school the bulk of the emphasis was on terrorists and active shooters with accomplices.

Blade-Tech(.com) has a quad pouch. Gould and Goodrich (gouldusa.com) used to make a quad leather pouch.

Galco (usgalco.com) has a quad pouch in leather for their shoulder system. They might change it a bit to fit it to a duty belt.

Make sure the first and every one after hit the target

If I had a 1911 on duty I would do the same thing as you and go with a quad pouch for Wilson magazines.

Definitely going to a quad pouch when I start carrying my P220. Plus a couple 10 rounders in the beat bag.

I carry a Sig 220R SRT and have a Quad pouch on my Duty belt and one mag in a that cool little front pocket when wearing 5.11's. If Im wearing regular duty pants, the extra mag is clipped to the visor. After reading these posts, I guess I should probably carry more in a bag as well...Cant have too many...

I carried 4 mags on my belt with a S&W 4506, plus more in the war bag. Figured I'd never need them all, but rather have them and not need them than the alternative.

Might try this, it's quite similar to what I had....

Don Hume is good leather gear and on this page the sizing chart includes for P220.Available in plain leather, basketweave or high gloss and four different hardware selections.

When I carried a S&W 645, I always carried 4 mags in a quad pouch.

I do not know if someone could relate to security guards, but can they carry more than 31 rounds?

I was told be a co-worker that was the limit, but like to now if that is true.

Maybe a company policy? 31 would be a ten round mag in a semi plus two ten rounders spare on the belt plus one up the pipe. Perhaps a way to ensure no higher capacity mags used? There is no statute or BSIS reg that I know of that puts any kind of a limit on number of rounds carried.

I carried a Don Hume quad mag pouch when I carried a Sig P220 on duty.
I never had much issue with the pouch or the mags. It was heavy yes, but it was comforting weight when you thought about having to use what they carried.

I sold it to a partner years ago. The SOB was fired for illegal activity off-duty and never paid me for the pouch or the then brand new raptor holster that I sold him to go with it... It was good gear all around though.

The academy, "factory", etc. I was certified as a police officer for Wisconsin and Michigan, but didn't get hired within one year so I lost my certification/endorsement. I have to do it all over if I'm to be hired.

I know for a fact that most of Richmond PD carries 1911 pistols and most of those are single stacks. Most of those officers carry the quad mag pouch on their belts along with extra mags in their car.

i ran into the same issue last year, with my new 220. after trying a few other options, i found that safariland makes a very good pouch designed for 1911 mags. with a little stretching on the straps, my 4 sig 220 mags fit fine. the number stamped on the back of mine says 277 and below is stamped colt 1911.

its just a big double stack pouch (like for a para) with a little elastic loop in it. it works well for me, because i can use the same pouch for my 226 mags, and the same holster.

i know they carry them regularly at the Orange county peace officers assn store. the ocsd swat guys use them.

There is no legal reason a BSIS licensed security guard or PI could not carry a chest pack loaded with 10's of magazines... a belt load of them... and a couple stuck in his pockets.. all loaded... period...the stinkin' qualification is 50 rounds and if you had like... what... 5 ten rounders you wouldn't have to stop to refill ammunition feeding devices...

I'm a BSIS certified instructor and facility... I'm not really sure what an expert is and I don't play one on TV ... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn recently...

As much as I love the 1911 and the .45 caliber, why not just save yourself the trouble and carry a G23 + a 15rnd mag in a tuckable rig? It's such a hassle to put on your full size sidearm + a bunch of back up mags routinely, I bet anyone who carries a full size does not do so EVERY SINGLE time they leave the house much less the backup mags.

Before retiring, on patrol I carried a 1911 with 4 magaines in the front with a quad pouch with 2 in a single line double pouch in case I had to lay prone. 7 magazines (one in the weapon) total. Luckily, I never fell in a pool.

Default mags

I just retired and I carried a S.A. TRP for raids and a Lt Wt Commander for "office/plainclothes duty" (which was 95% of the time). For raids I carried four Wilson 8 rd Mags. This was in addition to a H&K 53 or M-4. When "office bound" I carried the Commander & one mag. When I was undercover I just carried the Commander.

I was working with a San Jose Patrol Officer who had a novel set up. He had a quad pouch (no biggie there) and a USPSA type exposed single mag pouch. He said the single exposed mag was for a quick reload. After that he figured the mags in the pouches could be obtained without serious "speed" issues. Not a bad idea. He had Wilson mags.

WE carry a lot of 1911's here. Lots of leather quad pouches on belts, they work for some. I prefer open top mag pouches, and carry a D&L Sports quad ( http://www.dlsports.com/kydex_1911_s...ine_pouch.html) it is built like a tank. The silmilar Blade tech will break on you. I have two CMC 10 rd mags in back, two CMC 8 rds in front and 8 + 1 in the gun- 45 round of .45 ACP! Works great.
