Default Where is the best place to buy a black powder pistol

Where is the best place to buy a black powder pistol in the OC?

I shot one that one of the RO's had at Burro yesterday. I really liked it. I have some FFg for a little cannon I have, but I think it will work for the pistol.

The pistol I shot hit the taret easily at 50 yards, and I saw the dust clould in the berm at 200 yards...it looked to be very accurate for lead balls.

I have heard pawn shops are great places to score a good deal on one.

Not in the OC, but the best place to buy is Cabela's, Midway USA, and Track of the Wolf. All three seem to have the best prices. You may need FFFg depending on what you want to buy.

Are you the newly appointed thread sheriff or the brain police??

If you don't like the thread move on...as to bass pro....think retail plus 20%, certainly not my idea of "best" anything.

One more on the ignore list.

Are you talking muzzleloader or revolver?

Avoid the brass frames unless you are a reenactor and fire only blank charges. If you fire FF charges, you will spit a lot of powder out the chambers and muzzle.
He said "little cannon". FFg or even FFFg would be the correct choice for a desk top .40-.50cal cannon. I've got a really little one (yea, that qoute might end up being someone's sig line) which I'd oly use FFFFg in.

Bass Pro is the easy way out....thats like sending somone to Turners for an AR15. Very unimagnitive.

If you think two responses covers the universe of information about black powder, you have a limited idea and understanding of the depth of knowledge of the calguns community. A wise man seeks many opinions, an idiot just rushes to bass pro.

Just keep looking for a used one. They turn up in barely used condition all the time. The trick is finding a motivated seller who realizes that prices of BP guns fluctuate more than OD Glocks.

Dixie gun works has a nice kit that gives you everything except for the powder and caps, which is what I am looking for. Blackpowder bob said earlier to stay away from the brass frame units. What is a good frame? Steel? Stainless? I want a semi starter gun to learn my way around what I want or don't want...

Case-hardened steel frame is cheaper than stainless. The reason you don't want brass is it will warp over time from heavy loads.

1858 Remingtons are probably the simplest of all cap and ball to shoot if that helps you at all.

Are the 1858 remingtons actualy replicas made by Remington or made by some other maker? What are some brands to look for, and to look out for?

Dixie Gun Works is a great source. You can find pretty much anything you want. Best part about a cap and ball revolver is you can just order it through the mail, no FFL dealer required.

Remington does not make a cap and ball revolver to my knowledge. The replica "Remingtons" are made by different Italian makers. Uberti is the best. Pietta may also be good, but I don't think they're the same quality.

The only ones I would say to stay away from are the Colt "Signature Series" that were around in the 90s. They're junk. But, if you find a Colt that was made in the 70s, those are true collectors' items. Saw one at a Gun Show in NC a couple of weeks ago, new unfired condition, can't believe I didn't buy it.

The two major brands as JWI mentioned are Uberti and Pietta. I believe the dixie brand pistols at dixie gun works are Pietta.

They are both italian makers. As JWI also mentioned, Uberti's are marginally better.

Whoa whoa whoa, there's going to be a swap meet?!

I was planning on showing up just to watch the fighting, but are there really going to be people selling stuff? What time is this? I didn't see it on the event calendar.

I might have to bring some cash now...

Angeles Ranges sells lead balls, black powder and percussion caps. You can order these from Dixie Gun Works too, but there's a $25 hazmat fee for shipping the caps.

I didn't see it just a few oter reenactors asking about it. But, these are held for reenactors to exchange their crap for treasure prior to the public being allowed in. But, there are suttlers so bring your cash.
