Damn, that is impressive!
Would compliment my wet tumbler nicely, I.e. not having to use the wet tumbler all the time, not putting kasha in the wet tumbler lol.

Those of you in the Bay Area, check with Royal Market Food & Bakery or New Workd Market.

In the Sac area, check with Mediterranean Market or Babylon City Market.

Some other purchase options:

Amazon for $3.20/pound shipped

eBay for $2.40/pound shipped for a 10 pound bag

10 pounds is five batches of 2 pounds each. Question is, how many cleanings can you get from a batch of media? How often do folks typically change out corncob and walnut?

jandmtv, have you tried prolonging the life of the media by using dryer sheets? I assume cheap ones will work as well as the more expensive brands. What about pieces of cotton cloth?

As a point of reference, I got my crushed walnut from Western Feed Supply in Sac for $17/50# bag. Some were able to find 50# bags for as little as $11. 3 pounds lasts over 2 years to clean about 20,000 cases. Some cheapskates wash the media when it gets too dark, I simply dump it. I don't add anything to the media as it acts as an attractant to soot. I simply add cut up used dryer sheets which pick up the soot.

Is any dusting off required with these? Or can you go straight to trimming/priming?

Which will almost certainly find its way into the flash hole. I think one of the advantages the OP wanted to stress was that the buckwheat won't, and will still do a good job of cleaning. Me, I just figure cleaning out any stuck media will be taken care if when I clean the primer pocket (done after tumbling in my routine), so it's no big thing.

What the cases? They come out dust free.

Correct. But there are sevral more advantages to using this stuff than just no clogged flash holes. Cleans faster, polishes better, and doesn’t dust like walnut. Cases removed from the media are ready to load with no additional wiping off.

I’m tumbling 60 pieces of fired and decapped 300wm brass and recording it on video. I’ll be checking the brass at the 30, 60 and 90 minute marks in the video. I’ll post it here once I’m done so you guys can see he results.

It looks like toasted buckwheat does not clean the primer pockets any better .
Running the bottle neck thru the again decapping is a PIA
I have and use the RCBS case prep station - I want the
primer pocket and flash hole clean .

I’m ok with having to clean the primer pockets. Small price to pay to not have to deal with wet tumbling or the peened case mouths and screwed up mouth chamfer that follows each and every time I wet tumble with pins.

I'll give it a try. I hate the walnut dust even with the cut up drier sheets.

I kind of figured the nu finish / whatever I tried caught
Most of the dust / carbon / whatever came off cases .
If there is no dust , does the stuff from case end up at
bottom or do you still use dryer sheets ?

how many cycles does it last ? assuming cleaning 50 of the less dirty bolt rifle brass each time.

Seems a bit expensive.. I order corn cob blasting media by the 40# sack at maybe $1/lb picked up at the Concord Grainger store.. it's $34.40/40# sack plus tax.. It lasts at least a dozen to 20 tumbles before having to be replaced.. I get 5-6 tumbler fulls in my large Dillon tumbler.. and it's small enough to not get lodged in primer pockets..

I've been "experimenting" for years...thanks for the buckwheat info...as to flash hole plugging...I used the fine lizard bedding material from a pet store...ultra fine walnut shells...no issues with plugged primer holes and works well...I use a capful of New Finish in the orange plastic bottle and a few cut up squares of used dryer sheet (not new) and a shot of turpentine...keeps the dust to almost zero and works good.

If I want to mess with it and impress the guys at the range, I'll do the citrus soak deal for a short time..let things dry really well and then polish the brass with the tumbler...get's the inside clean and the outside all shiny...but usually don't waste the time.

Ends up at the bottom. I’ve never used dryer sheets. Guess you could use it to catch the gunk though.

Not sure. I just started using the stuff. But after 5 hours of running it, all the kernels still have sharp corners. I don’t see this stuff wearing out fast since it doesn’t get dirty. The funk cleaned from the cases doesn’t stick to the kernels. It just settles at the bottom of the tumbler.

Report back when you use it. Before you put the initial load in, add 2 caps of nu-finish and let it tumble for 10-20mins.

Lizard media drove me nuts. I’ll never use that stuff again. The amount of dust was ridiculous. The dust from walnut seems to stick to the cases like a magnet. I had to blow all the cases with compressed air each time I tumbled. With lizard Media. This stuff doesn’t. Cases come out dust free.

If you are happy with your current media stick with it. I don’t mind the extra cost since I foresee this Media outlasting corn cob and walnut by a large margin.

Let us know how that works.. I'm curious to find out if it in fact outlasts the common items or if it eventually wears out similar to the common waste polishers.. Buckwheat being a food item and not a waste item like corn cob and walnut shell just seems like a waste to me.. just like those who tried using rice when it was cheap..

Harbor freight has it. Just be careful, not all car polishes are brass safe. Some contain chemicals that can damage brass. Nu finish for sure is brass safe.

I don’t follow your logic. I paid for it, I’ll decide if I want to eat it or tumble with it. It’s in no way a waste. It’s not in short supply and 90% of the us population doesn’t even eat it. As for when it wears out, I don’t load high volume like others here. I’m sure others will be able to wear theirs out way before I do mine. I only load for precision rifle, not plinking.
