You mean the link that goes out to a closeout item that you can't actually buy that doesn't include 3G? Not helpful.

iPads are very cool pieces of tech that are a pleasure for (most) people to use.
Cheap, crappy laptops aren't (yes, I have had several)(no, I haven't found a sub-600 laptop that doesn't qualify as cheap/crappy). For something to keep around the house, by the couch, on trips, whateve you, iPads are very cool. If you want to use it as your main computer...yeah, not so much. But most people don't buy iPads to replace their desktops and laptops.

IPADs are great. I guess it depends on how much disposable income you have? A lot like firearms the more you invest in them the more you can have the exact tool to fit the required job. My MacBook Pro will do everything my IPAD will do. But a lot of times the IPAD is what is with me. If all I am doing is reading, watching video or movies, listening to music (then maybe my IPOD is all I need), surfing the web, or showing people photos, then the IPAD is all I need.
Small, light, durable, great battery, instant on and off and beautiful screen. It has its place in my arsenal. |

My wife managed to con her dad into getting her an iPad for Christmas/Birthday (her birthday is Dec. 24th), so I guess we'll see how that works out.
I'm kinda pissed though. I was planning on getting it for her as a surprise and now I'm stuck without a gift, so I'm in a bit of a bind. Sh*t, I guess I'm off to the Beverly Center after work tomorrow. --B

I have a blackberry, an iPad 3G, and a desktop PC. Used to own a PC Laptop but gave it to my Mom after purchasing the iPad and not having booted the laptop up in 2 months. It all depends on your needs but the iPad for me is the perfect intermediary between my Blackberry and desktop PC. I am on the go constantly and with iTeleport Connect (remote desktop app), my desktop PC is always with me, both monitors! I only have about 30 apps on my iPad but they all get used. One of the best things for me about the iPad is NO BOOT UP and LONG BATTERY LIFE. If I'm out and need to look something up, I can in seconds. I find I use it at home too alot more than I thought I would. It's the perfect size for carrying around the house, lounging on the couch or in bed. Not an apple guy at all but, I have to admit, if it had Flash support and front/rear cameras, it would be dang near perfect IMHO. Anyway, again, it all depends on your needs, but for me, it's paid for itself in increased productivity several times over and I was the biggest skeptic ever upon purchase. Good luck.

If it incorporated flash I might have considered it but since it doesn't i'll pass.I really don't do much in the living room except watch movies so I really don't want to be messing around with an Ipad when while i'm watching it.My little man cave is where I get my nerd on so no use in an Ipad really.

I should also note, you can get around the lack of flash support on the iPad with a remote desktop app bridge to a PC or Mac. Do this all the time. A bit of a pain, but solves the problem most of the time. However, no iPad remote desktop apps have sound support that I know of, so visual only.

I actully got one yesterday (early xmas present from the gf), and it's freakin' sweet.
It can be expensive to own and use. I spent like 20 bucks on software in my first half hour alone... That said, it's a breeze to use. The apps are cool, the screen is amazing, and they've got some kickass games that run surprisingly well on something so small (RAGE HD is the perfect example). The notetaking apps are pretty cool (so you can basically replace yoru paper notepads with the iPad). I wish someone ported over the rifle log books (the write in the rain ones) to the iPad. All in all, it's a great little device.

"The Iphone! It's the Ipad that is smaller, can make phone calls and take photos!!"
Only this day in age can a company make a bigger, crappier device than something so perfect such as the iphone and slap an $800 price tag on it with an apple logo and people go bananas over. Steve Jobs could take a ****.. put some buttons on it.. slap an apple logo on it and clone it 2 million times and have people waiting in line for 2 nights to pay $1000 for it. Our own ego is our greatest enemy. The Ipad? I'll take two. |

Yeah, that's it. The iPad is popular because of marketing... Not because it's a slick device that works very well right out of the box. Not because it's got kick-butt graphics. Not because it's fun to use. Not because it's so damn versatile.

For the same price someone could get a nice laptop with hard drive space where you can install actual programs on and have full internet capability. I'm sorry but when I see someone with an Ipad I either think... 1. They have an ego problem 2. They are in denial about it being so useless compared to a smartphone, they pretend to "use" something they paid $800 for. 3. They got it as a gift and carry it around in case the person who bought it for them sees them. 4. They voted yes on prop 8 because they want to marry Steve Jobs 5. They have sausage fingers so can't use an iphone. 6. You are too dumb to know they purposely left out features such as camera so they could sell you the Ipad 2 next year for an even higher price with a camera. If you have one, sell it now lol. "Oh wait I thought you were describing the Iphone."
Are you being intentionally obtuse? Have you tried reading books/mags/newspapers on a 3.5" screen over an extended period of time? I have, and it sucks. On a 9.7" screen, however, it's quite nice. "For the same price someone could get a nice laptop with hard drive space where you can install actual programs on and full internet capability." Sorry, try again. For 550 (the cost of a basic iPad after tax), you can get a 500 dollar laptop. 500 dollar laptops are crap. I've tried several. There's a huge difference. For the rest of your points.... 1. Hell yeah. 2. Nope. Smart phones have a place as your primary communications device. An iPad supplements this. 3. Possible but not really. 4. Lol. The pure ignorance in that statement is mind-boggling. 5. Yes, but I can use my DroidX just fine.

The iPad has a place but I went with an iPod touch 4g instead and will stick with that until the iPad gets some competition and a couple product generations.
The fact that the iPad doesn't have native 720p HD resolution is stupid and continuing to leave out flash support is worse. After a few iPad competitors mature Apple will have to react and give the consumer what we want unless they are happy with a 15-25% market share (when they could have 80% if they play their cards right). |

"check newegg you can get a deal. I read on my laptop propped up on my lap and scroll with my mouse."
Yeah, that's where I got mine from. Point is, for 500 bucks, you're not getting a *good* laptop. The build quality is generally crap. I've bought cheap laptops from all the major manufactors at the bargain prices, and the the difference in quality is quite evident. "6. You are so filthy rich the bigger screen size is worth $800." $550. That difference in screen size gives it a whole host of additional functionality. It bridges the realm from smartphone to desktop. It can absolutely replace a standard laptop, depending on your needs. Certainly, it's not for everyone. For some people, it would just sit there gathering dust. For others, it's a great piece of gear. It really depends on how you'd use it. "The fact that the iPad doesn't have native 720p HD resolution is stupid and continuing to leave out flash support is worse." 720p is essentially 1280 by 720. The iPad is capable of 1280 by 768....HD looks fine. The lack of flash is a pain in the ***, but that'll be fixed.

Sorry, iPad resolution is 1024x768, not 1280x768...
It might look OK but it's scaled and 4*3 instead of 16*9. It was a dumb move with all the HD content out there and very little new 4*3 content in the future. |

Replace "reading books/mags/newspapers" with "watching porn together in bed" and that's why my wife and I are thinking about getting an iPad. The handheld nature of the iPhone is excellent in such situations, but the images are way too small on the iPhone. The iPad looks to be optimal for that purpose.

Got an iPad for Xmas, it will not replace my notebook, however I like it. Posting from bed now. I find a bunch of items on the iPhone are just too small, this de ice looks like a perfect fit. One thing that sucks is that my iPhone game apps will not sync, I can't play the same game on both devices

Because the iPad is fantastic... But you may just want to wait for the new model that will come out in March... Much more better...

Right, because it's comfortable having the hold the display during the entire movie/show, and the built in speakers are so much better than a home theater system.

My wife ended up getting one and it's actually a very useful little device. My analogy would be that of a carry-pistol. Sure, a full size 1911 is great, but are you really gonna carry it everywhere? You're much more likely to throw a little .38 in your pocket when you head out the door. The iPad is the P3AT, the 15" laptop is the 1911. I'll actually take the iPad places I wouldn't bring a full size laptop. --B

You mentioned utility. Quite frankly, its a nice novelty, but its basically one of two things:
An oversized iTouch/smartphone. Too big to carry around. or A weaksauce touchscreen laptop. Sure, there are plenty of things that make it "cool", but everything useful that it does can be done better by a smartphone or a laptop/netbook.

I got one over Christmas.
The iPad is hands down better than any netbook I've used. It's easier to use, has a far better screen, and is always on. I push a button and it instantly turns on. It doesn't replace my desktop, and it doesn't replace my DroidX. But it does become my device of choice when I'm not in front of my computer. For me, the three things it does best are: 1) Quick web browsing while watching TV (checking email, wikipedia, etc). 2) COOKING. The epicurious app is awesome. I can hang the iPad off a cabinet and have the display up while I'm preparing the food. I can also use it as a music player (Pandora). As I have neither a TV nor a stereo in the kitchen, it works very well for both purposes. 3) Reading. The screen is more pleasent to read than my kindle, so it's great for bed-side browsing and reading. It's an oustanding device for what I use it for. The netbook, phone and desktop wouldn't work nearly as well.

I'm sure it's great but it's not something I would do. Between something I will do and something I won't do, I better stick to the exercises that I will do... An iPad might be a compromise in many ways but it is more usable than a smart phone or a laptop in different respects. It has a better interface than a smart phone (mostly because of the bigger screen) and it's more portable than a laptop (because it has a smaller screen, no keyboard and very good battery life). If you won't use a smart phone because the interface sucks and you won't drag around a laptop because it's too bulky and the battery life sucks, iPad is a solution that you might use. It's not for everyone but there are lots of people who will find value in it. |
