The only criticism I would have on your build would be to ditch the wireless if you can. It'll save $40 for other parts. Do you not have a monitor or keyboard to use currently?

Also recently decided to go with a 'mini-atx' platform instead of a regular ATX/Mid-tower case. I wanted to save a little bit of desk space:

I'm looking forward to it!
If you're running a mini-atx I highly recommend you get Liquid CPU cooler instead. Radeon runs HOT and you'll want extra fans. And you want to make sure your GPU fits your case. PC Partpicker will not tell you that.

Where I'm at now, I can't run a Ethernet cable from the modem(downstairs) to this room(upstairs). I am interested in "powerline" kits but I apparently for it to work best the outlets have to be on the same breaker?

No, sir. I haven't owned a desktop since Packard Bell was around Hadn't had the room for one. I don't even currently have a desk but I plan on making a basic design out of pine. I do have a corded Logitech mouse when I would game on this laptop. I figured I would put some money into peripherals since I'm going to spend quite a bit of time typing & staring at them. I really like the look of a 27" monitor. CoolerMaster HQ is a few miles from where I live so I feel I have to get something from them too

Ah. I thought about it because it would be awesome to try but I don't think I want to invest anymore money into this build. The case I want isn't the tiniest thing around and seems like it gets pretty good airflow. Comes with a 200mm fan in front & a 140mm in the rear with options for two more up top.

Edit: Oh, you're talking about the Radeon CPU? I was going to get an FX 6300 but I changed my mind & would be going with an Intel. I'll consider AMD's brand new ones the next time I would upgrade.

Someone mentioned that a reference ("foundation" for the upcoming Nvidia) card with a blower cooler would be better in a smaller case then a design from the partners? Even though those tend to have more fans on them.

If you're looking for the very smallest case, you might want to look around for a "lan box" or even a home theater PC case. They're designed to be small enough to carry around to lan parties, but still hold and cool components.

Not sure how handy you are, but if you're building your own desk, you could make a wood box to house a all the components; save a bit more without a case. You'd also saving on space the case would take up. Your only consideration would be air flow for cooling and noise which isn't that difficult.

One other thing I noticed, is with that parts picker, it doesn't factor in shipping or customer service of each retailer. Make the same exact build on newegg or amazon and compare prices considering they both have free shipping and superb return policies if something is damaged in transit.

I decided against going with the smaller mATX cases or mITX for this build since it's my first & I want it to be relatively easy to build out of. Also decided to go with a more attractive(to me) design as opposed to the super plain jane Fractal Design-"Define S" I originally wanted. Plus I didn't realize how big mid-towers can be until I went to Micro Center a few weeks ago.
Ahh, damn. I forgot about them not adding tax & shipping. Thanks for the tip! Other than price alerts, I like that that site can organize your build plans, has user reviews and gives you the estimated wattage on everything.

Liquid CPU is relatively the same price as the CPU cooler you're choosing.
For a smaller case: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Hydro-.../dp/B00A0HZMGA

For a larger case: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Hydro-.../dp/B00A0HZMGA

Those are just some options.

I was referring to your GPU choice. Nearly all of them run extremely hot.

But AMD CPU are great bang for the buck. It all depends what you'll be doing on the computer. If you plan on playing the newest and latest games, AMD can do most of that. If you have a lot of multi tasking; graphic designing, coding, etc, Intel beats AMD in most cases.

This has been my primary machine since I bought it new in 2006 for $2,400, it was top of the line and similar to the M90. After a few upgrades along the way it still manages to stay relevant and runs just fine. I also have a newer Dell M3800 from work, but this is my daily driver at home.

2006 Dell Inspiron E1705
Intel T2600 2.16 Core2Duo
4GB RAM (3.2 usable)
256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD
512GB Seagate HDD in expansion bay (dedup)

This isn't (for now) a gaming rig, it's my 4K web surfing, photo editing, travel, and general purpose setup, and it's built around a Razer Blade Stealth i7 4K 12.5" ultrabook. If I decide that I want to use it for gaming then I'll add the optional CORE external gaming card enclosure and a good card. My monitor is a 4K 24" Dell rated at 99% sRGB color coverage. It's all pretty new but 4K Youtubes look pretty awesome.

  • Fast performance utilizing an Intel Core i7 processor, with 256GB PCIe SSD and 8GB RAM
  • World's first notebook with an individually backlit keyboard - 16.8 million color options per key
  • Thunderbolt 3 The one port that does it all with Thunderbolt, USB, DisplayPort, and power over USBC

It's harder to steal 19" rackmounted PCs... no matter what is in them.
Most robberies are in-and-out... and it's 4 longer screws per ATX case just to remove from the rack.

Fractal R5 Case
Asus X99-A Motherboard
Intel 5820K 3.3Ghz - 6 core - 15MB level 3 cache
Corsair 32Gb DDR4 Ram
Samsung 500GB SSD 850EVO 6Gbps

Noctus Nh-u12S cooler
Corsair 650 Watt power supply
Logitech Keyboard wireless MK710
(4) ASUS VN247 24" displays
Lite On DVD writer
Windows 7

All of my storage is on QNAP Raid 6 array and a separate RAID 1
I don't play games. Believe or not I actually was on a budget when I had
this system built.

I had it built for stock trading. The larger fans make for a really quiet setup
I'm quite happy with the performance. More then I need for what I do

I could probably could get by with 3 displays, but 4 really makes life easier

Default My Latest Build for HTC Vive

This was my first build in about 5 years. I decided to make something beefy enough to run the HTC Vive.

Had lots of fun building this one, it runs like a dream. I purchased an Acer Predator Monitor (1440p, gsync, IPS, 144hz) a couple weeks later (not pictured) runs games at 144hz and OC to 165hz when possible. Case has no optical drive, only one button on top for power, its very compact and I love the finish on the case.

Here is the component breakdown:

To be honest my man... I feel pretty much the same as you. I'm not getting rid of it, but it needs a bit more time for some stuff to come out for it. If you pick one up you need to get Elite Dangerous, and Project Cars-- both are great.

REGARDING 60HZ vs 144HZ

my xb271hk came in yesterday... I set it up and it's amazing. At first I said " I can't deal with 60hz" but as soon as I activated "GAME MODE" and gsync it looked about 90% as smooth as 1440p/144hz.

I agree though you can't beat 144hz but the 4k visuals look sick at 60hz and gsync irons it out.

On topic: does anyone overclock their CPU/GPU? I'm currently at 4.4ghz on air for my 4790k.

Off topic: I have a large corner desk and a large shelf-area that I don't really use, would I be insane to mount components inside the wood box area?

∆ Waiting for the price to drop on the 1080 to somewhere around reasonable.

Rumor has it, AMD accidentally leaked a more powerful card, the 490. I would assume they'll release it for the holiday shopping season.

This should drop prices of the 1080, and will likely see the aftermarket tuner 480s for $200ish

I stopped by Frys and everything was cleared out. I wandered for a bit and found a 480 randomly, but it came out to 280 after tax... I contemplated, but meeeh not worth it at that price for me.

Nice builds!

Got myself an MSI GTX1080 2 weeks ago and have been contemplating whether or not building a new PC.

Still running a Haswell I5 4670k@4.3ghz on water.

I'm going to be stuck with the bill for a dental implant + crown in another month so my sweet build has been pushed back At least by the time I finally buy a gpu, the dust should settle for all these new releases. Curious how the 1060 does & awaiting reviews on 3rd party 480's. I'm hoping they do 1440p a little better than a reference 480.

Anyone have experience dedicating a card to Nvidia's PhysX? Just ordered a 1070 and was thinking of keeping my 970 as a dedicated physX card.

I'd have to look up benchmarks but in the past, it hasn't really been worth it for me if you have a flagship card.

I'd also say its not worth it, the minor differences you'd see in physics in certain games doesn't make up for the electricity used. Since you already have both cards, pop them both in and see for yourself.

Got a tax refund and briefly thought about building a new system. I build on a test bench with all new parts except power supply then empty the current case and install the new stuff. That whole process is fun.

What is giving me pause is the installation of Win 7, VS 2013, SQL Server 2008, Office 2013. Other than Win 7 they are MSDN copies and I worry about the s/n clearing registration. And oy vey, all the software I would have to install again!

Should arrive by Wednesday. I'll see if I can do a benchmark.

Built my budget rig last October and it has handled everything beautifully.

CPU: i5 4690k @ 3.5Ghz (for now, don't need the bump)
cooler: Cryorig H7
Mobo: ASRock Z97 LGA1150
Mem: 2x 8GB DDR3-1600
Drives: Sandisk 240GB SSD + 2x WD 1TB HDDs
GPU: (DON'T LAUGH) PNY 750 Ti 2gb
Case: Ultra Rogue M925 Full ATX
PSU: EVGA G2 650W 80+ Gold full-mod
Monitor: Acer 23" 60Hz
Key: CM Storm QuickFire TK (reds)
Mouse: Logitech G502
Case fan: CM Megaflow 200mm

In total, parts came to around ~$700 after rebates and taxes. Held out on a vid card because I'll grab a 480 soon enough. No need to upgrade at this time because I've mostly been playing Insurgency (source eng) and BF2 (yes, you read that right, community is still going strong).
